Despite Union Bordeaux Bègles' unexpected early departure from the Top 14, their standout players Louis Bielle-Biarrey and Matthieu Jalibert will not join the French squad for the upcoming Test match against the All Blacks in New Zealand. The decision, as reported by the French media, follows the team's narrow defeat to ASM Clermont, which saw them finish eighth and miss the knockout stages.

Fabien Galthie, the French head coach, has chosen to omit the duo from his preliminary squad due to their extensive playtime during the season. Both players have surpassed the French national team's limit of 25 matches and 2,000 minutes in a season, with Jalibert playing 27 matches and Bielle-Biarrey participating in 31. This policy aims to manage player workload and ensure their well-being.

"I'm really disappointed,"

commented Marshall on The Breakdown, reflecting on France's selection strategy. "The side the French have brought is clearly underpowered...It's complete BS, the way they're treating this tour."

Despite their absence, other players from Bordeaux may still feature prominently in the summer internationals. Club captain Maxime Lucu, who played fewer games due to injuries, is keen to represent France. Furthermore, centre Yoram Moefana and veteran prop Jefferson Poirot, who might come out of international retirement, are also in contention for a spot.

The French squad's composition is further complicated by the potential advancement of Toulouse in the Top 14, which could affect the availability of several key players for the national team. This selection dilemma is not new; last year, France faced criticism for sending an under-strength team to New Zealand, resulting in a 3-0 series loss.

The policy of player selection has been a contentious issue, with recent changes allowing more flexibility in player selection for later tests against the Wallabies and Japan. However, these adjustments do not apply to the upcoming match in Wellington, which has reignited debates over France's commitment to fielding its strongest team during international windows.

As the French team prepares for their challenging series, the absence of Bielle-Biarrey and Jalibert will undoubtedly be felt. However, it also presents an opportunity for other players to step up and make their mark on the international stage. The rugby community will be watching closely to see how this blend of experience and new talent performs against some of the toughest opponents in the world of rugby.
