That athlete that was Frans Steyn is gone. He was carrying so much weight that his knee no longer has any cartridge.
Even if Sushi has been good to Steyn, I doubt we will ever see the old Frans Steyn

Frans looks in top shape to me....good on him
28 Jan 2015, 20:33#6
I think one of two things has happened to Steyn there.....one being all over Liposuction, Saffex ! His legs were never that long, surely ?
28 Jan 2015, 21:36#7
I would not be too quick to jump on Saff's back over those pictures. Draw a few line across the three pictures and have a look.
28 Jan 2015, 22:46#8
I'm not jumping on Saffex !!
What I was saying was. The pictures, plural, look slightly long in the limb....that would imply they had all been slightly stretched and he had decreased accordingly over time ! It looks less obvious than having a short, dumpy chap ( for example...not him ) and then turning said man into a lithe, long limbed, coltish individual !

Dave
Photos is really ahrd to judge on - but Steyn does look thinner. His weight should be in the vicinity of 102 to 105 kgs - othrwise he will carry some lard. His overweight of the past two years affected his performances badly - he lost pace and his bodyweight caused knee problems for him,
He was told in 2013 to get his weight down to 105 kgs and he never really got anywhere near to that target. Jake White just overlooked the problem and the nickame "Fat Fransie" was completely justified. I would however, make up my own mind after seeing his performances in Super 15 this year. I f he improves 100% from what he produced in 2013 and 2014 then he could become a candidate for Springbok selection.

Dave
We will see how h performs in the Super 15 - He was so disapppointing in that competition over the last two years - that performance will be the only issue that counts if he really is in shape.
His weight was not the only factor that affected his performance - his poor reading of games and consequential poor implementation was another factor. However, the latter could have stemmed from White's deficient backline game plan - so there may be room for improvement he can ultilize.
29 Jan 2015, 11:50#14
I'm not saying he hasn't got slimmer.....but I don't think those photos were quite natural. If you look at his calves, for example.....I would doubt he would want them to be that lean and, he is a young man that doesn't have long, lean limbs naturally !
I feel his pain, being of the dumpy, short legged variety myself !
29 Jan 2015, 13:01#15
Becs you should know that I do not normally go out of my way to defend Saff. I have just not seen the need to go edit those pictures again just to prove a point but I have copied them and pasted them on Microsoft Paint and then added the horizontal lines. As you can see, I have positioned them around his neck where it meets his shoulder line, around his elbows, the bottom of his hands and around his ankles. So the images are more or less in proportion in length.
After the remarks about the probable manipulation of the pictures I went back and added gridlines to check the width of the shoulders on the pictures and once again, they were as close as could be between the three pictures. Unfortunately I forgot to save it and will have to do it again, but I cannot be bothered. I have done a bot of photography myself, in my day, so I know the effects of different angles etc.
It is for that reason that I searched for his profile on his club's website, which should be the most up to date, IMO.

Not sure what Ceradunce is banging on about in his typically pedantic and nit-picking manner.
For starters, my pic on this thread was done as a joke and is not to be taken seriously.
Secondly, the first pic that Dave put up is a composite picture and if all three pictures have been elongated then what is the point of conmparing them? Does anyone else know what Ceradunce is trying to prove with his little red horizontal lines? It's a composite picture, you can't stretch one without stretching them all. No need for leg or body measurements. I mean, duh-huh!
29 Jan 2015, 13:32#17
Yes, Rooinek....you understand what I am saying here !!
Also, Ceradyne...look at your latest picture. Look at his calves, for example..look at them on the photo Saffex posted.

Wow, you're sounding a little bit hot under the collar, Ceradunce . . . almost as if you give quite a substantial shit about my opinion!
LMAO!
29 Jan 2015, 18:35#22
Personally, I wasn't actually trying to start an argument with anyone or be remotely rude, so I do find Your response a bit harsh, Ceradyne.
My point was that I did not think you understood what I was meaning and that Rooinek did; that I was referring to all three pictures, not just the latest of the three Saffex posted. And I only took one example, of his calves, to just indicate to you why I felt the pictures didn't seem quite natural....and when you look at your picture, " the latest " , you can perhaps see why ?
Now I have explained my reasonings, that is that.
29 Jan 2015, 19:33#23
Uhmm on my side it clearly shows my "little red lines" across all three of Saff's pictures, comparing the three in relation to each other. I think that Dave was trying to indicate that he is slimmer than in 2013 and Steyn's club profile seems to confirm that.
29 Jan 2015, 19:37#24
Oh and BTW, becs, I do not see why you seem to think that I was on your case. My pictures was actually in response to Beeno's suggestion of dodgy photography.
29 Jan 2015, 19:40#25
You said you couldn't care less what I think.
I was just saying that I thought it was a little harsh given I was merely trying to explain my reasonings, as I have explained in my last post.
29 Jan 2015, 22:28#26
I still don't care because I have also given my reasons and I backed it up by showing the images.

Dave
He was so bad in 2013 that Plumtree said he is no center and dropped him from the Sharks starting line-up. Just look at the BS he produced in that series and especially the Sharks game against the Brumbies at home and you may get the message.
In Super 15 2014 he was a complete mess - the worst performing center in both attack and defense in any starting 12 in Super 15. For instance in attacking play at center he was the only center that managed 1 line break in all matches and who never scored a try. When he played at flyhalf he was worse in defense and sabotaged the Sharks backkline through poor decision-making and the inability to decide when to kick or when to pass balls. Th worst flyhalf play ever was in the game against the Highlanders when the Sharks won a turnover in possession on the halfway line and all Steyn did was to kick the ball over the goal line where Ben Smith touched the ball down and a 22 meter kick-in by the Highlanders resulted. Hs kicking game throughout the series was putrid - to say the least - so bad that he gave away possession on average nearly three times in every match he played in. Really a total saboteur of the Sharks backline.
If you think that is the efforts of a "class act" than so be it. He may have been a class act before going to France - since his return from France he was th Fat and non-productive prima donna of the teams he played in. .

By right-clucking and enlarging the so-called skinny calves is also exposed. It is an optical illusion created by the yellow lines on the inside of the socks. Check the picture at his profile as well.

Frans will be wearing 10 in the Sharks campaign before long. Lambie needs to play 15 where he is best suited.

Moz, while I agree that Bambie is a better 15 than 10, I am of opinion that Fransie is a stop gap 10 at best. His kicking out of hand is too slow at 10 He will do well at 10, but will be out of his depth every now and then. Sadly 15 is also his best spot. Does well at 12, but his reluctance to pass spoils the good stuff.

Lambie is a basket case when things go wrong....witness Wales, witness the S15 semi against the Saders. He has no model for how to play the position....he will crumble in the S15 at 10, just as he did in 2013 and 2014. Frans will be called in to save the day.

Francois Steyn at 10 - now that really is a joke in capital letters. He may - if he improves on his performances over the past two years - make the team at 12, but that is a big may - he was atrocious over the past two years.

Handsome is as handsome does. No team had a better S15 pool record than the Sharks when Frans was at 10....including most of the away leg, and the fabulous 13 man win over the Saders. The answer is obvious, instead delusional fans still believe a slow, small chap like Lambie will change his stripes.

No team had a worse performing 12 and 10 than th Sharks had - both from a defensive and attacking perspective. Just remind me who was a worse ball handover specialist in the whole of Super 15 in those two positions in Super 15.
Kicking at goal won the Sharks most of their matches - their backline was totally destroyed by Steyn's presence. Clueless and useless and the slowest player in the Sharks backline. Problem is - he is not only physically slow - he is also mentally slow in decision-making. That kind of thing ultimately loses more matches than winning matches.
Unfortunately when fat and with a wacky knee as a result of serious weight problems, the Sharks had a serious problem in 2013 and 2014. We will have to see if he is getting better in 2014 - if he continues in his merry ways without improvement his contract with the Sharks should rather be terminated.
