Right, Jacques du Plessis or Nizaam Carr should've been Louw's replacement instead. Its a bad call by Meyer but that's typical.

Meyer is playing with fire here - I think tht Whiteley is far better than Burger at this stage of his career.   Jacques du Plessis is to my mind more a lock than a flank forward. He is good in Tight play - but not good enough in other aspects of loosie play such as ball protection and recovery.     Although much better than Alberts he is the same sort of loosiie - more a lock than a loosie
He is not a type of loosie one should use against the All Blacks and the Wallabies - you need a more mobile loosie for them.

Jacques du Plessis could be good in the northern Hemisphere, but he will be to slow as a loose in the Southern Hemishpere. He is in the mould of Fat Albert.

Nope...Schalk would sense what was needed seconds before this plodder. Any additional pace he may have would be negated by an irresistable urge to make contact.

Ah yeah Moffie you are as stupid and conservative as our coach........and both of you will be sitting there trying to work out what went wrong after 4 losses in a row........I'll save you the time.....you are stupid and an open book

Funny that not so long ago you were a fan of young du Plessis but how dare one of us bring up a class youngster to challenge another beloved geriatric

Dave you still keep getting it wrong. I like du Plessis, I like Senatala, I like Faf, I like Willemse.  And I was the first poster on this site to call for a Bok opportunity for Pollard.....while you chaps were still whining for the waif Goosen.

But I'm a realist. These tests against Oz and NZ are tests we should try to win. Schalk is far more likely to make a real contribution to that effort than Du Plessis, who has to broaden his game. He has talent but he is still pretty raw.

After all apart from Pollard, only Coetzee and Etzebeth among the young players have really succeeded since RWC 11.....even though a long list of youngsters have been tried. We can all see the more athletic youngsters....it's spotting those that have the rare blend of skills and mental strength to make it in tests, that's really in question. Unfortunately that's not your strength, mostly just compiling lists.

To be quite honest Schalk Burger is no longer a player that he once was. His distribution skills was one of his key assets but he has always been a bit overrated in my mind by the media. There is no doubt Whitely, Carr and Jacques Du Plessis would do much better and I'm sure any logical coach that understands the way loose forward play works within a tight 5 would suggest Schalk shouldn't be selected due to the others that are more superior.

Draad, it was only a few weeks ago that our resident fork-tongued fop called Marcell Coetzee a "process tackler" (whatever the he ck that is supposed to mean) who would never be test quality.
Just watch, Moffie will soon be claiming he was the one who discovered Coetzee after his latest performance.

Et tu Brute hey Draad. Nice one.....but I dont think he is going to be a great Springbok, more of a place holder....he relies too much on effort, he isn't a carrier and as a pure fetcher he is well below the best.

RooiAAS it's ironical that you are even on this thread given you wanted Luke Watson vs Schalk Burger, but some guys have no shame. As for Pollard I stand by my statement.

Agree Jerome, Skulk was a bit of a media myth and I don't think I've ever seen a Springbok loose forward who was as weak with the ball in hand. Skulk would just go to ground on first contact nearly every single time. Amazingly weak in the tackle for such a big man.
He did have an amazing workrate in his prime and he was always a courageous defender, but his best days are a long way behind him and I think he's a very poor choice . . . especially when you think of the exciting talent Meyer could have introduced in the form of Jacques du Plessis, Nizaam Carr or Warren Whiteley.

 Jerome
You must remember Mozart is the most prejudiced member of this site.  Unless a player is over 30 - and espially if the player is a potential threat to the place of one of Mozart's favourred players in the Springbok team - he would come up with the weirdest descriptions of what is wrong with the player concerned.
One of the players Mozart is dead set against always was Marcel Coetzee - but the list is extremely long - virtually every younger player ever wearing a Springbok jersey, potential players in the squad and any other players showing promise  goes autpomatically through his denigration programme.
His ideas about players and player performances is so screwed up - it is better to just ignore what he says.

Nope I am not getting any of it wrong Meyer is.  We squeezed past Wales and the Argies and are now on a losing streak which will continue for the sole reason that Meyer keeps selecting washed up has beens undermining our true potential in the process.
Schalk like Jean and Matfield are past it......the younger players are far far better. du Plessis would make far more of an impression than Schalk would just as Willemse would over Matfield

Can i first say that i remember coming to this forum some time back and seeing lots of people saying Duane was slow and didn't deserve his spot. How wrong he has proved many people this season. Absolute beast!
As far as Burger goes, he never really did anything, apart from growing older, to make any of us lose faith in him. If we can go wrong by picking him, i don't think we can go far wrong. He is solid, reads the game well and has done well this season. His carrying has lacked.
But if i had to make yet another one of my left field picks, i'd go with Siya Kolisi. Great pace, great awareness and very good defense. Also like Whiteley.
But lets be honest we could pretty much put Armand van der Merwe just about anywhere and he would rock it! Geez i am developing a crush on that little warthog.
Honestly it's Beast and Jannie i am more worried about. Koenie for my money!

Provided he avoids serious injury and isn't rushed into pressure situations too soon, Pollard is a great prospect. He has the physique and head for serious rugby and is quite an athlete.

All the hype about Lambie, Goosen and Jantjies seems so silly in comparison.

No I wouldn't start him this year or possibly even at the RWC.....but he would be on the bench behind one of the Steyns, preferably Fransie.

May 16, 2014, 21:52:22AJ, Pollard has much better shot. Face it Jantjies and Lambie are small chaps....pumped up to the max by diet and training, but still small. Goosen is taller, but like JJ a player with a light frame....easily discarded in the tackle.
Pollard is a solid 6 ft 2 inch youngster....naturally up around 210 lbs. he has the physique that the other three lack. The body to function and survive in test rugby. He also has a good boot, an excellent eye for the gap, leadership credentials and a competitive nature.
He is the first of these young fly halves that probably has  a genuine chance.

May 17, 2014, 04:35:33 Mozart is the dolt of the century.  He makes wild statements mostly without facts and that makes him earn that role with distinction.
The following are the basic information about the foremost flyhalfs of the pasty to decades:-
Wilkinson       =    1,78   -   89 kgsCarter           =    1.78   -   94 kgsBarrett          =    1,75   -   82 kgsBarrett          =    1,87   -   92 kgs
Now lets look at the SA flyhalfs:
Goosen         =     1,85   -   89 kgsLambie          =     1,77  -    87 kgsPollard          =     1.88  -    97 kgs
Morne           =     1,84  -   91 kgs
None of the above flyhalfs are particularly big players.  His favourite flyhalf is Francois Steyn - who is 1,94 and 112 kgs - with Morne Steyn after him.
Since Mozart is clueless about backline play and the role of the flyhalfs - he is addicted to size and not the qualities shown by the better flyhalfs in world rugby over the past two decades.  According to Mozart - the less the ability to think - the better the flyhalf.  Then as to defense - the two choices at flyhalf of Mozart are poor defenders as well.
Pollard is still very inexperienced -  In the Under 20 WC last year he was not very good - but he shwed signs of improvement in the recent CC games.  He is one to follow - but is not a clearcut choice at flyhalf at present.

Pollard is not better than Goosen or Lambie. Joke has missed the boat with Swiel so it's difficult to judge.
I'd be more than happy with Goosen, Lambie or Pollard as the Bok 10.
Only a complete fool would want useless Morne at 10......Conservatism and ignorance of the highest order.....insulting to rugby lovers in fact

How could a true rugby man rate morne it defies comprehension.

Somehow I don't think Meyer sticks Burger right into the starting lineup but maybe Whiteley gets a start?
Kolisi was playing so much better in the Currie Cup, he probably would have got the call instead of Burger. Missing out on the Bok squad really seemed to have lit a fire with him.

Sure you called for Pollard as a Springbok flyhalf after 2015.     Until then you wanted Fransie or Morne Steyn.   Both are plodders of the worst kind - but according to you the answer at 10.
That is like saying the player may be suitable in future - at present we should stick wit Morne.   Wrong as per normal.   Morne should not have been anywheere near the squad.   His display against the Aussies were typical - absolutely unacceptabe.   But according to Mozart he answer at 10.   Wait until memory of the Aussie disaster fades a bit - and Morne will be back as your favourite flyhalf.

Not exactly. I called for him to start off the bench this year, behind one of our experienced fly halves....the NZ model. But I did elevate him into the future Bok flyhalf and put him ahead of the pack of young fly halves. You and Dave still wanted Goosen or Lambie . That's the difference.

Turns out he was more ready than I thought....his performance against NZ is one of the best by a young Bok in recent years.

The squad is being reduced from 30 to 26 players - 4 to go back to their franchises/clubs .   Who will those four be?   I would think it could be Bakkies Botha,  Morne Steyn, Gurthro Steenkamp and Oupa Lohobe.

Burger doesn't play to the ball and even though he was selected as an opensider originally by Jake, he's no fetcher ... not like Watson who was a natural 6 if ever there was one. .

Back in the day Burger played a similar style of rugby to that of Jerry Colins.

Now he's prone to injury, goes to ground at the first bit of contact and is a shadow of the player he once was.

Very poor choice, Meyer ... ONCE AGAIN!

Agree 100%. Though i would add that of the bunch he has the best defense AND attack, by some distance, based on the form i have seen from the others this season. Actually if i were gonna go totally on form then Frans Steyn would have to be there either as first or second pick.

You are right Saffex. Pollard is my pick though. For his physique but also for more than that.
I feel that we have been watching the likes of Carter, Cooper etc for ages now and giving them much respect but at the same time telling ourselves that though they are great players, we play a different kind of rugby.
There is a chance that if this kid does well it may issue in a new era for the way the Boks play. To me, the Boks have very rarely during my lifetime performed to their true potential, because we seem to have this strange belief that we are incapable of playing attacking/running rugby where we use kicking mainly as a weapon rather our mainstay. Must be something in our water that makes us so incapable.
So yeah, i guess i am pinning my hopes and dreams for how i would like us to play, on him. Though i am only doing that because to my mind, only physical proof that it is possible will ever change the status-quo. And he seems to be our best shot at finally wintessing that proof.
Daydreaming i know

Plum, have to agree with you on Armand Van Der Merwe he's exceptionally strong for his size but I would want to test his scrummaging with weaker props as the Lions are strong there and could hide a potential deficiency . If the Lions manage to keep their players for next season I see them being a surprise package, they have a good stock at hooker. Malcolm Marx is another powerful hooker.
