….Goosen, Lomp, Coetzee and Dud Toit have to be among the most injury prone players in the game. You may or may not rate these guys, but it’s impossible to build a team around them. They are simply too fragile.

Add Pretorius, sadly Butch and Arno Botha. Botha would've been a key Bok if he wasn't injured so much. It takes something truly spectacular to get injured before you leave the team coach, whilst sitting down!

PSDT has only suffered injuries of late not earlier in his career Goosen’s looked bad and not even in contact - there does seem to be a bit of an issue with these artificial surfaces when it comes to taking purchase

Vermeulen has been injury prone at the start of his career too...

PTSD in 2014 and 2015 was barely fit. He was also out for a fair time in 2013 with a sternum injury. I think he missed his scheduled debut through that.

This game when your players are playing an extremely physical game. Although, Goosen was trying to side step,  wearing the wrong boots for the surface. But how was he suppose to know

Not the wrong boots it’s an issue with the artificial surface - he is not the first to succumb to this surface The surface is great for NH rugby in terms of speeding up the game but clearly it’s not the finished article given the injuries occurring Did RG suffer the same fate

I have to say I’m not a big fan of these artificial surfaces. They do seem to cause certain players a lot of problems.

Artificial surfaces for rugby seems like a solution to a problem that never existed. Mud is part of the game…just as it is in golf.

Mud hardly makes for good attacking rugby I’m all for artificial surfaces if they can improve the grass and underfoot replication

We don’t play good attacking rugby. As for the finished product the NFL has been experimenting with artificial surfaces for over 50 years….and it’s still not grass.

The NFL has the same problem. Though, their studies seem to indicate that this is not related. Either way, I never did like the feel of artificial surfaces myself.

mozart, you beat me to the punch with that posting.

I can still picture Jaap Bekker covered in mud from head to toe in the 52 series in Dunedin and the field looked like a swamp.

My eldest grandson also played rugby on a artificial surface here in Canada (for a number of years) and many players suffer knee and ankle injuries during that time.

But I would suggest that perhaps a different type of boot is required on that surface.

Don't the NC teams on the South Island play on a similar surface and if they do perhaps a member of this forum in NZ could enlighten us.

The last test against NZ our attack was putrid. Tactical kicking and a couple of key steals and penalties to edge the encounter. The WC final was all about set piece and wing opportunism. The Welsh test was a mess. We don't register anywhere for attack.

They found athletes were 58 percent more likely to sustain an injury during athletic activity on artificial turf. Injury rates were significantly higher for football, girls and boys soccer, and rugby athletes.
