Ex Keo

Johan Goosen spent Tuesday’s training session running at flyhalf, indicating strongly that he is likely to run-on against Australia at Loftus on Saturday.

In my experience because of time constraints in terms of preparation Springboks coaches have had to show their selection hand in the Tuesday session. Goosen lined up in what is almost certainly the starting side, while Morne Steyn worked defence with the players opposing them.

Goosen made good impressions in his short stints off the bench against the Wallabies in Perth and All Blacks in Dunedin. He has been the man most have called for to replace the struggling Steyn and it appears coach Heyneke Meyer will entrust him with a big part of the responsibility for galvanising the team’s attack.

Meanwhile, it appears Frans Steyn will recover from a rolled ankle in time for the Test. He made significant improvements overnight, and while he was still on crutches at the session as a precaution, my understanding is that he will play.

‘The X-rays were clear and the swelling has settled nicely. We’re hoping to get him to do some training on Wednesday,’ said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts.

Flip van der Merwe (lock, calf), Jacques Potgieter (flank, groin) and Lwazi Mvovo (wing, hamstring) did not train with the squad on Tuesday and will be managed accordingly. A final call on their availability later in the week.

Elsewhere in the team, Eben Etzebeth looks set to return to action after a suspension and will partner Andries Bekker in what appears to be the only other changes from the side that lost to the Blacks in Dunedin.

Likely Springboks XV- 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Francois Hougaard, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermuelen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Beast Mtawarira.

Pity Lambie or even Taute dont get a shot at 15. Flip may still make it at lock.  We shall have to wait for the final selection. Good news re Frans.

The pack will weigh in at just over 930 kg. Its beginning to look a bit like a power pack but I have to say I would have liked Coenie in at loosehead (If fit and its safe to play him there) , Bissie at hooker and Flip at lock.

The current team will also be strengthened with the return of JP, and the selection of a fullback possibly Taute or even Lambie. Then we need a dynamic scrumhalf. Ruan you had better pull finger as guys like Vermaak are playing well and a new kid on the block has arrived in the sharks scrummie Reinach someone or other. Also guys like Van Zyl might come into the reckoning. I am  afraid Pienaar shuns the physical stuff. Prove me wrong Ruan you have oddles of talent.

Seriously Beeno, who would you replace with flip? Bekker or Etzebeth?

Good question by Ek.   The other worrying factor is Kirchner.   As long as he is around - we will have a square peck on a round hole.    I do believe that Taute may be our long term answer as full back.    I would also against Australi specifically prefer Coetzee as 7 - Alberts is too slow.

Insofar as Pienaar is concerned - there is NOTHING wrong with his defence and he played strictly according to the rule book of Meyer and Van Graan in the tests thus far.   Theatrics behind the forwards as displayed by Hougaard is not the answer.   The answer is a quick and accurate service to the backline and that is what the real situation is.

Bar Kirchner - the team look like the one I think would have given a major chance to beat the Aussies by at least 20 points.   Take out Goosen and Francois Steyn and we are in the nightmare situation that I mentioned elsewhere - so lets hope for the best.

As I have said before Etzebeth and Flip as our locks Bekker on the bench. I am going for hard men who do the work of a tight forward. Bekker i sfar more physical than matfield and afar better forward. However I think he thrives when things get looser and will do very well as an impact player.

Against the less physical wobblies Bekker is fine. Against abs and Argies - put in Flip.  However I would still prefer Flip against even the wobblies. Put enough pressure on them physically and they will crack. We saw the abs struggling last week. Some more of the same!!!!!!

While safffex and a few misguided individuals want to throw away our competitive  edge with the selction of players like brussouw, daniel (Who he seems now to have dropped at last as he has wee chilliboy)  and Burden (Now its Fourie who I think is a better 6 than hooker (Scrumming not good enough against good scrumming sides) Beeno and Meyer realise what is needed to beat the abs forwards.
