Mixed feelings for Goosen 2012-09-09 22:19             Johan Goosen (File) Related Links

  • Cape Town - Springbok flyhalf Johan Goosen says they let themselves down by allowing the game against Australia to slip through their fingers.

The Boks lost the Test 26-19 in Perth, after squandering a 13-3 lead in the first half.

Goosen, 20, said while he was immensely proud to become a Springbok, his feelings afterwards were mixed.

"It's sad we couldn't pull this one through. We set high standards as a team. There's no doubt that we should have won this one, so we're pretty disappointed," he told Beeld.

Goosen was on the field for only 10 minutes but he showed enough in that time that he could flourish at international level.

The Free Stater had a few line breaks which split the Wallaby defence open and his introduction to the team seemed to give the Springbok backline more urgency and direction. This will just add to the pressure on incumbent flyhalf Morné Steyn, who again struggled to give the backline any flow and direction.

The Boks now travel to New Zealand where a clash against the All Blacks in Dunedin awaits on Saturday.

This is almost an identical scenario to the away test to Australia last year. The teams shift in intensity was that of desperation, rather than anything by Goosen. That was all, nothing more, nothing less. How very shortsighted indeed, I'm certain they just cut and paste the same garbage from old articles.

Requiescat

Why am I not surprised by your comments?  Any real desciption of what Morne Steyn does to destroy backline play is not recognized at all by you.   You thrive on stats that prove nothing - love to cut and paste from there - but then you accuse others of cutting and pasting.   Wake up and smell the roses - the end of Morne Steyn as an international flyhalf is nigh and the sooner he goes - the better it will be for Springbok rugby.

morne's days are numbered. the last of the donkey players. i am having a 10 min silence to all the one trick pony flyhalfs of yesteryear

the need for change has come but HM needs to change his approach as well or else he will be jobless very very soon

In the meantime accoring to a report in the timesonline - it is reported that Steyn will remain as flyhalf for the All Black test - but Goosen will be given more game time.  Maybe 15 minutes and not 10 like on Saturday.  meyer better get rid of Morne soonest - otherwise his career as a coach would suffer badly.

i would say give goosen at least 30 min to prove his worth. lambie needs to start as well and we need louw of brussouw to secure our rucks its a complete mess. the forwards body positions are really really bad. i see high school game where the forwards show better skills at the ruck. hooper disrupted us badly and he is pretty a no name. but HM will stick to his guns. we will see how long he will stay in charge with his selections

Goosen played well for 10 minutes, he has real potential. I must say theres no way boks have a realistic chance of winning the ABs next week if Goosen is not going to start. Goosen has to be in the starting 15 line up, its just common sence as a coach to make that decision. Morne fails to impress week by week. Cruden will completely outplay Morne, and meyer needs to see that for him self.

fair comment lucid but one has to be carefull for throwing a player into the deep end early in a career. it depends from player to player. some players perform well under pressure but more often than not most players just buckle under pressure to be fair i dont know goosen as  person but he seems to thrive in pressure "bmt". things are anyways to dire so it might be a gamble to give goosen a start but i think its much needed. we need a brussouw to start as well to ensure our recycling speed at the rucks

Yeah the argument can be made both ways about the advantages and disadvantages of playing Goosen. I would however still start with Morne. Playing Goosen of the bench, but the next game i won't give him 10 minutes. I'll give him say 20-30 minutes. with the game following that a full 40. After that i will only make my decision to start him or not. A very safe Option I know but i think neccesery in this instance as not only is he comeing off an injury he is also new to the international scene. This is not just to blood him into the international scene but also to manage him after the injury. He might be good to go regarding the injury but rather be safe than sorry taking into account the long term.

the guy is 20 so man management is important here. the fact that morne is playing so badly will just help to elevate goosen even quicker but i am not sure starting him will be the best thing. that only those close to the team can tell. as i said players differ some cant handle it the rest cant

Agreed Carpet, but my main concern is, what happens when his injury reoccurs, Then we waste his whole career. Incremental game time, we need to be happy with steyn now, to benefit in the long run.

Perhaps not a good test to get his first starting cap. Playing in NewZealand against the AllBlacks in the least experienced bok team for like 6 years. I say let this be Mornes last starting test, and bring on Goosen with 25 minutes to go.

Then Goosen starts all the home games as the first choice. Goosen will then be fully match fit and ready to go

Sharkbok....how can we convey this info to HM?

Don't believe he reads this forum. So does anyone know the email address of the local evening newspaper in Pretoria.

Your comment was well received by us expats in Western Canada by the way.
