This has to be the home test against the ABs in 98. Down by almost 20 points with 15 minutes to go they scored three tries, all starting from deep in their half. Honiball for once looked for gaps, instead of crash ball, and looked dangerous. Joost scored a beauty and the peerless Skinstad, with two players marking him, found a way to cut between them for a try.

I caught this on youtube, looking for some rugby action. We sometimes forget how good some of these guys were. But that whole team was indomitable.....and I can't recall one kick from the Boks in the last 15 minutes, except a brilliant Honiball offensive stab.

They should play that last 20 minutes to the Boks before big tests.

Must agree!!

I remember that match. It was a match I thought we had lost and so decided to cut the lawn instead of watching to the end.

I was truly pissed when I learnt that we had come back to take it in the end.

My punishment … listening to others speak of it … and having to wait till last year to view it for the very first time.

Fantastic match … will never forget it.

Well Capone, you'll find more cool old footage on youtube. We sometimes overlook this obvious resource.

Draad I recall after that game we were having a planning meeting with our French sub in London. A few of the guys were real rugby nuts and one of them told me the Boks had reinvented rugby. I have never seen footage from that game, so thanks for those details. I will definitely follow up.

Mozart

I was at the test at Kingspark that day.   Was invited by a company to come to their tent afterwards - so was a number of other people who sat in the same area on the pavilleon.

After 15 minutes into the second half a couple of hem got up and went to the test.  After the game when I got to the tent - I toild them "You missed a bloody good test"

Yes it was a good one - but I think the one at Preotira against the Assies in 1997 also was classy.  The one wher the Boks beat the Aussies 61 - 22.

17 August 2002, SA vs Australia.

The Springbok backline, brilliantly marshalled by flyhalf Brent Russell . . . only playing because of a late injury to Andre Pretorius . . . shows the kind of creativity we've only dreamed of and they open up a commanding lead against the Wallabies. Inspired by substitute Mat Rogers - and after Marius Joubert is dismissed for a typical high tackle - the Wallabies stage a truly magnificent second half comeback and they lead the game by 5 points with only seconds remaining. The Springboks launch a sustained attack with wave after wave of Springbok attack being repulsed by staunch Wallaby defence until finally Werner Greeff breaches the defence to go over in the corner to level the scores. The conversion will win the game. An exhausted Greeff calls to Stefan Terblanche to take the kick but Terblanche pretends not to hear him and keeps walking. Greeff takes the crucial kick himself and nails it to secure the most unlikely and entertaining springbok victory since the Miracle at Lancaster Park.

The prior Australian test in Brisbane was also a cracker, with great tries by Joubert and Russell. But we lost that one 38 to 27, in spite of the heroics. Always better to win.

i wouldnt say that 98 is recent BTW, i always liked the 95 RWC win, it was fitting considering SA under mandela were trying to unite a country recovering from some inbred government policies.
the game wasnt spectacular, but it was very special.

best performance IMO wsas the Boks win over the ABs in hamilton. on the back of mornes killer boot and brilliant tactical kicking from du preez, Boks came thorugh that tough match to clinch a whitewasj victory over the ABs.
that test also had francois steyn at fullback and coupled with his sniper rifle boot, was one of the best  FBs for 2009.

Draad I managed to find a fair amount of that test .....Pieter Rossouw certainly scored two of the best wingers tries we have seen since readmission. Like Skinstad and Joubert....a vastly underrated player by those north of Franschhoek.

Agreed that 98 test against the AB's is top of the list, I have never shouted so loudly while watching a rugby match - it was brilliant - I still recall the venue of where and with whom I was watching that test.
