On a brisk Wednesday at the Free State Stadium, the rugby scene was set ablaze as both Griquas and the Pumas delivered performances that spoke volumes about their dominance. The Griquas secured their second consecutive victory in the Toyota Challenge by trouncing Georgia’s Black Lion with a staggering 56-21 scoreline, while the Pumas, recovering from an initial stumble, dismantled the Portuguese Lusitanos 57-24.

The Griquas, fresh off a victory over Romania A, continued their momentum with an explosive start against the Black Lion. Scoring eight tries in total, they made it clear they weren’t there to play games. The match ignited with lock Lungi Mbiko storming over the try line within the first minute, following a powerful break by No. 8 Dillon Smith. Smith himself highlighted the match with a sensational try from a cleverly executed midfield lineout move that caught the Georgians off-guard.

"We took our chances and executed our game plan flawlessly," said a jubilant Dillon Smith after the game.

Despite the Black Lion resting key players, their performance was riddled with errors, especially in the scrums, allowing Griquas captain Phumzile Makondwana to further widen the gap shortly after halftime. The Georgians did manage to put points on the board through No. 8 Giorgi Sinauridze, but the day was largely dominated by the South African champions.

Even with flyhalf Liam Koen’s red card for a high tackle, the Griquas didn’t let up, continuing to press and scoring two more tries a man down.

Meanwhile, the Pumas made a roaring comeback from their defeat to Black Lion by putting on a try fest against the Lusitanos. Tino Swanepoel was particularly lethal, crossing the whitewash three times. The team’s veteran hooker Simon Westraadt and No. 8 Marvelous Mashimbyi each bagged a pair of tries, contributing to a total of nine for the team. Despite numerous changes to their lineup, the Pumas led 26-3 by halftime, showcasing their depth and resilience.

The Lusitanos did manage to salvage some pride with three late tries, but the night belonged to the Pumas, who displayed a potent mix of experience and fresh talent.

As the tournament progresses, fans are keenly watching the next round of matches, where the Griquas will face off against Lusitanos and the Pumas will take on Romania A. With such explosive performances thus far, expectations are sky-high for what these teams will bring to the field next.
