About time, had a good career and was a fantastic prop in his prime but now there are many other better Looseheads that can strengthen the Boks.

Damn another good guy bites the dust....but I fear French cooking was ultimately too fearsome an opponent for Gurthro. He was probably the best loosehead at RWC 11

A great player in his prime around 2010, it was a pity that he left SA at the time as he became unfit in France.
Was it his international retirement, or also from club level..
I think Meyer probably tells some of his older guys to retire, but lets them announce in public that they have decided to retire themselves. Often they are allready not part of the Bok plans. One has to wonder about all the retirement players if it was the wrong decision to recruit them in the first place.

Yes Guthor was a good prop for sure.
Sensible folk like Bakkies and Guthro know they are over the hill. Those with big egoes dont and belie ve they are still indispensible to the Boks.
I mean how can we possibly do without the 105 stringbean powerhouse lock who will shortly be 38 years old.

This is really the funniest statement around for a long time. That fearsome opponent was in evidence in 2012 - when Meyer brought Steenkamp back into the Springbok team. It never grew worse - it was there all the time. That did not stop our site joker to support him all out, because in his opinion Steenkamp was the best loosehead in RWC 2011, The joke was in evidence when the joker praised Steenkamp to high heaven as late as in June last year.
However, the "fearsome an opponent" Steenkamp faced - was even to a greater extend in evidnece in the case of Francois Steyn - who was punted by the joker as Springbok flyhalf or center on a continuous basis last year when he weighed circa 118 kgs. He is back from Japan now - having lost 12 kgs in lard - and we will have to see whether that contributes to better rugby performances.

He was widely respected by his supporters when he was physically capable of performing. When eh returned to Springbok rugby he was not up to standard and respect is shown when players perform - not when they play based on reputation only.
But then the statement about respect is based on our site joker's fascination with the past players and has bugger-all to do with performance. Everyone respected Steenkamp when he was in his prime performance years - but only the board fool respected him when he clearly was not up to standard anymore.
What deserve respect is his decision about retiring from all international rugby. He himself realized he is not up the required standard anymore - something that went straight over the head of Meyer and the site fool.

Wish other old players will follow suit...it requires a true and humble evaluation of ones self...it is honest and unselfish.
All credit to Guthro and Bakkies...Victor needs to search deeply into this subject and do more soul searching and answer honest questions I believe...an overstay breeds a little disrespect from younger players and the the fans...
It is often sad that egos become so big that even great men struggle to overcome...sadly John Smit fell victim to this...lets remember them at their best and peak...human nature has a short memory...only remembers how you finished, not what happened in the glory days. We are very unforgiving when this happens but I believe the real fault lies with the coach/selector...in the case of Smitty (PDV) and now Victor, who HM still keeps in the side.
