Ex Sport 24

urban - With the return of JP Pietersen and Frans Steyn from Japan and their inclusion into the Cell C Sharks starting XV for Saturday’s clash with the Stormers, the Durban-based side’s midfield looks especially dangerous.

The experience they bring is special: between them, the pair have accumulated more than 300 caps for the Sharks in Currie Cup and Super Rugby, more than 100 at international level, as well as a number of caps earned in France and Japan.

Commenting on the duo’s return to the side, Director of Rugby Gary Gold, told Sharks websiteeditor Michael Marnewick: “They’re hugely experienced Springboks and they are coming back to a group of players they’ve been with for a long time, it’s not like this is a new team for them.

“And it’s not as if they haven’t been playing rugby. They came straight back in because they’ve been playing rugby week in and week out in Japan. I don’t think it’s a gamble bringing them right back in, their experience is going to help us through the spine of the team and will hopefully help Bissie (Bismarck du Plessis) and Patrick (Lambie) with the leadership throughout the whole team.”

Commenting on the leaner-looking 27-year-old Steyn, Gold believes there might be a subtle change to his style given the new physique he’s brandishing. “Half of Frans has come back from Japan, I’m not sure we’re going to use him as a battering ram. But his play-making ability is exceptional, we want to try and have an opportunity where we can play a brand of rugby where we have two first receivers, Frans has played 10 as well and that makes a big difference.

“And JP’s versatility will help us as well. Hopefully it’s having the all-round package with the older heads in what I think is going to be a very pressured situation down at Newlands.”

The Bulls went into last week’s clash with the Sharks having suffered consecutive defeats and they reacted well to the pressure. Although there is no cause for panic in the Sharks camp, they know that a good result this weekend is important and will take a lot out of the loss - both positives and negatives - as they look to break the Stormers undefeated run.

I wouldn’t say it’s a must win match, but we’re bitterly disappointed about last weekend, we want to rectify what happened,” he explains. “We thought we played well enough to win the game even though there were areas of our own performance in the first half we weren’t happy with, but we still thought we did enough (AGREED). We’re going to have to repeat that work we were happy with and rectify the other issues.

“And it doesn’t get easy against a team hasn’t been beaten, and doing it away from home again.”

Despite the severe disappointment, there is a steely determination to perform on the weekend, to deliver the kind of performance that brings positive results.

“The guys are fired up, I’ve been really impressed with their response after the bitter disappointment of last week. There are areas we can definitely improve on, but it’s very difficult to be angry with the players as a coaching staff; I thought the character we showed to come back from 30-19 down was outstanding to regain the lead.

“The guys are very hungry and we’ve been very impressed with the way they’ve trained this week.”

Saturday’s clash at Newlands kicks off at 19:10.

This will be averey interesting match and nothing more so than the JP Frans combo!

Go Mighty Stormers!

This statement of Gold is a real joke.   We all know that in Japan clubs play every 14 days - not week in and week out.   The players coming back from there is half-baked and on the poor side - normally way below of what is expected of them in Super 15.
The joke is the statement that Steyn is a playmaker - since his return from France he has never shown that he is indeed one.   However, the unclear issue is the half of Frans heading.   He reportedly lost weight in Japan - so did he lose half of the lard he was carrying over the last two years?   Is he still the "Fat Fairy" or is he out of that one?

Oumaaik, I've mentioned before about the 5 hour daily training sessions in Japan resulting in the players returning with superb aerobic fitness .......... obviously they need to adapt playing at the higher level here but that comes in due course . Look at Kaino, ending up last season as NZ player of the year . Won't be long before Schalk Burger regains his superstar status either .

Ball also stays in play for 7 minutes more in Japan when compared to Super Rugby.

Interesting. Japan may have been good to Steyn with less games so less injuries and getting battered all the time.  Injury free may have given more time to get fit. Sometimes experienced older intelligent players like Schalk Burger can play better if they play less.
Lets just hope the half that is left in Japan is the crashball one, and not the one which can pass and be a play-maker.
Steyn was part of class of 2007, the favourites of Hieneke Meyer. He was the first choice inside centre for the Boks originally when Meyer took over, with Jean pushed to outside. Could it be a Frans Steyn at 12, and Jean at 13 for the world cup. With Jacque Fourie on the bench after he decides he wants to play in the world cup. (Maybe he just does not want to get injured in the SuperXV)

Sharkbok
The story about being fit on return from Japan has been disproved time after time.   The come back and get injured easily because of non-fitness and their speed became a joke because of that as well.
To have the center pairing you mentioned - Steyn and Jean with Fourie as a back-up would be a disaster beyond imagination.   Steyn flopped badly in 2012 - was a total flop in 2013 and the killer of the Sharks backline in 2014 - showing no ability to read games and crashballed totally ineffectively.  His passing game was totally ineffective.
Jean was never a good enough 13 - he is a 12.   He was good as a 12 in 2013 and way below par in 2014.   A year older and with virtually no rugby under his belt because of a major injury in 2015 - he will be worse in tests in 2015 than he was in 2014.
Fourie is absolutely useless in attack - even though he did make most of the tackles that came his way.  Problem is his pace has vanished completely from his game and that fopr a 13 is a huge problem.

ou maaaikie lets just wait and see how Frans and JP return. Frans apparently has lost weight and is ready to go. He is actually a playmaker and very good IF he regains early form. We shall see.Jean was fine last year. A rest could do him the wolrd of good.I am hoping Schalk will come out firing. How long will Rhodes be out. He could be tried at 6 as we cant afford a show pony like Carr who has been really poor - also will be keeping an eye on him to see if there is any improvement. Kolisi has a huge amount to prove as to whether he can cope with Super 15 rugby. How we are missing the hugely underat ed and gutsy and pacy Deon Fourie!!!!!!!!
Jaque Fourie's pace is not too shabby ou maaikie - you are exagerating. In one test he tracked most of the field and kept pace with the opposing wing quite well. Trouble is he will have no opportunity to prove his worth at home.
