Hansen's comments on the selection policy in SA

After saying in a radio broadcast he believes that Coetzee will try his best as a coach - Hansen went on to say the following as reported on Rugby 365:-
"However, he said that anything other than merit-based selection risked undermining a team's confidence and performance.

"At the end of the day, one thing I do know is that your sporting teams have got to be selected on merit because if they're not people start questioning whether they should or shouldn't be in the team," he said.

"What that does is it affects your confidence and the golden rule is that if you've got a team that's confident, they'll play well, no matter who they are."
At least he is clear about selection of sports teams and his assessment of the result of not selecting players without regard to merit is also clear.  
The observations are clear - players are not going to be selected based on merit in SA ad that is going to go downhill fast sooner rather than later,   
One thing is clear Coetzee's team will not be competitive against any strongish team  

 Hansen should stick to his own country and his Island problems.
The fact is that the political interference is here to stay and Coetzee will have to just work around that.  I still maintain that there are good players who could be "groomed".  South Africa has a bigger problem than quotas - the freaking unions all have their own agendas and do what ever they want and play players out of position etc.
Time for a national strategy like the model working in New Zealand.

 Hansen is correct. 
Quotas are harmful to everything it touches.
Nothing will change that. 
Grooming players is all good and well ... but only at club level.
Don't expect us to support some chump with potential at test level. 
That's not the arena to spoon feed anyone.

 Hansen shouldnt go near that with a 90 foot pole .Any closer will risk unwanted freckling .

The thing that pisses me off the most about the Coetzee appointment is that for 4 more years we will have to read about the great talent betrayed by the incompetent coach nonsense.
But at least they won't have Matfield to kick around anymore.

 I've decided to give the new coach a shot. 
Who knows, he may surprise us all and deliver as promised.
I hope he does.
 

Yea Moz - Bok fans have always been hyper critical of their team and their coach. Much more so than any other country or team in the world. The political interference just sharpens the rhetoric.
Coetzee is going to be blamed for everything and anything.
Its going to be rough going, but Coetzee's Boks will do better than most will give them credit for.

 Race based sellections are wrong on many levels, with the POC players probably being the biggest victims. This should really be stopped. It won't happen without a serious effort by someone. I get the feeling that something's gonna give in this regard...soon. The populace of SA are fed up with the SQ. Things seem to be swaying a bit. I really hope, and believe, there will be a positive swing soon.

He'll be ripped a new one if he messes up.
He should not expect any special treatment. 
I expect him to select inform players ... I expect him to select those that are deserving ... I expect him to produce a game plan that brings positive results, as he promised ... I expect him to take us into the long awaited Bok era ... and if he does that, alls good with the world.
It's now time for him to up his game ... to take his average coaching skills to the next level.
I'm prepared to give this quota a shot instead of writing him off before the first whistle's blown. 

A fair chance to prove himself.
The South African rugby fan is tired of second rate performances. Tired of losing to the likes of Japan and Scotland.
Get it right Allister or suffer the consequences.

 CC, that's just it, he's already not getting a fair shake. He's assistant coaches were appointed by SARU...as were the rest of his support staff. 

 What are you saying, Draad? That Allister's merely SARU's puppet?
If he wasn't happy with it, why did he signed on the dotted line?
He did mention that he could call on any support at any time, didn't he?
Suddenly I'm not feeling so good about this whole set up.
I wonder if he'll be allowed to select his own team?

 We all were under the impression that Meyer selected his own team - but there were two co-selectors involve - namely Ian Mac and Jooste.   Both their contracts have not been renewed - so it is not clear how the selections would be done in future,  
 

I have heard that they hired a South African business tycoon (retired in the US) to provide advice on the selections. Some say he will defend his picks to the grave while other say they wish he would speed up the process
