Morne Steyn © Gallo Images Play Bok rugby games 'Heyneke needs to be braver' - Gavin Rich Meyer admits he erred in letting Steyn keep on kicking 15 September 2012, 14:30

Springbok coach Heynke Meyer admitted that he may have made a mistake in letting Morne Steyn retain the kicking duties despite succeeding with just one out of five shots at goal in South Africa’s 21-11 defeat in their Rugby Championship clash against New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday.

The normally accurate pivot kicked one penalty but missed three other penalties and a conversion. Inside centre Frans Steyn also missed two long-range penalty attempts in the first halt which would have seen the tourists go to the break 18-5 up instead of reaching the break 5-3 down.

“Sitting here afterwards it is easy to make calls but it is a life and death situation for me and maybe I made the wrong call but Morne usually comes back and kicks well,” Meyer told a news conference after the match.

“Frans Steyn is a great goal-kicker and (scrumhalf) Ruan Pienaar can kick as well. You don’t just take a guy off for his goal-kicker. I’ve always said that I am going to bring Johan Goosen through and give him game time.

“But Johan had struggled with his goal-kicking in training during the week and he is still only 20-years-old and he hasn’t played for almost three months. I thought he did superbly for the 25 minutes he was on the field.

“But we could have changed the goal-kicker. We talked about it at half-time. I thought Morne would find his rhythm,” he explained.

Morne Steyn was eventually substituted in the 59th minute for the young tyro Goosen who missed one kick at goal before nailing a 45-metre effort.

Springbok captain Jean de Villiers said that the decision to replace Morne Steyn as the designated kicker had been discussed at half-time but the decision was made to give the flyhalf one morechance.

Morne Steyn then missed hsi attempted conversion of Bryan Habana’s try in the 49th minute.

“I don’t think that I am the one to give advice about goal kicking. We discussed it at half-time and we felt that we might want to give Ruan an opportunity but we thought to give Morne one more chance. He had one when we scored the try and he went off after that,” said De Villiers.

“You want to show confidence in your players as well and sometimes you have to make those difficult decisions. You make mistakes, I make mistakes. Unfortunately he couldn’t kick all of his goals but that doesn’t make him a bad player,” he explained.

Meyer said that he saw Goosen as South Africa’s potential first-choice flyhalf but that he did not want to rush the youngster while Morne Steyn was still part of his plans.

“I’ve always rated Johan Goosen. I watched him play as a youngster and it is a pity he got injured because he was always part of my plans but I don’t want to throw him to the wolves so last week it was 10 minutes, this week it was 25 minutes. He is a guy with a lot of character and mental toughness.

“But Morne has also shown in the past that he has mental toughness so it is great to have two flyhalves like that. It’s great that Johan is coming through. I will look at the video, take the emotion out of it and maybe make a few hard calls,” he said.

Unfortunately not - he was talking of relieving him from goalkicking.   Four misses out of 5 attempts - reminds me of the Morne that played in Argentina in the Juniors - and he missed every kick at goal.

I think 70% of the value of Steyn in the Springbok team is his goalkicking - 10% his defence, 10% his stratgic kicking and 10% his backline play.   The fact that he failed miserably at his kicks at goal and his backline play was iffy-iffy and his strategic kicking 50:50 - his point allocation should be 3 out of 10 maximum.

Meyer should replace this guy - his playing abilities are NOT UP TO STANDARD.

Morne's kicking was hardly believeable so one can understand the mistake.

However Morne's kicking has been fragile and now ths awful display. It cant continue. Meyer will have to see if Goosen can start or if he is still concerned he could use lambie. Goosen is lookig the part no question about that.

Beeno10 that avatar is a masterpiece.hahahahahahahahaha

Meyer needs to man up and drop Morne now and hopefully we will NEVER have to endure him in a Bok jersey again. The same goes for Jean at 13 and captain - he has to go. Jean was a brilliant 12 in his day but those days are long gone.

For the home leg we need the following side taking the field:

15. Lambie 14. Habana 13. Taute 12. Frans 11. JJ 10. Goosen 9. Hougaard 1. Beast 2. Strauss 3. Jannie 4. Etzebeth 5. Bekker 6. Coetzee 7. CJ Stander 8. Vermeulen 16. Pienaar 17. Jordaan 18. Mvovo 19. Coenie 20. D.Fourie 21. Flip 22. Louw

Saffex that team looks good bar the inclusion of Mvovo, he's useless.

Agree - bur I hope never to see Mvovo in a Springbok Jersey again - must be a bad dream - that one.

Taute came on as replcement for the Lions.   Did quite well - nothing spectacular.   Not ready - I believe.   Would rather go for Jordaan.

Crap Mvovo is a good player with plenty of gas. Nope Taute is better than Jordaan. I like Jordaan but I fear he might just not be physical enough for test rugby

Dave

Mvovo is on par with your erstwhile supported Greyling - he cost us more points than the latter.   He is useless under high balls and have no idea aboiut rugby - speed is not the only issue required from a wing.

By the way - After Morne failed with three kicks - why was he even allowed to kick the forth one.   Poor coaching and captaincy in evidence.
