A great player in space when their is quick clean possession. He thrives on a high tempo game and clean front foot ball.
However absolutely useless when put under pressure at the base of the ruck, and/or it is wet conditions. He then becomes the worst scrumhalf in the world.

I think Hougie would have been a very useful player if he was used correctly ...a wing or a scrumhalf but he should have established better at one or other...chopping and changing in this context creates confusion in direction to his identity...he's very useful at times and shows tremendous skills at both...but these are intermittent...another blunder of desperate coaching in SA to find the magic to beat the clever AB's. I feel a little sorry for Hougie because his carreer has been hot 'n cold...he would have done well in a country like NZ

I doubt Hougaard will be on the plane to the World Cup in England.
The three scrummies that will be selected are 1. FDP- Best decision maker. Good kicking and passing game2. Pienaar- good decision maker. Good kicking and passing game3. Cobus Reinach. done enough to prove he was a better option in the Northern Hemishpere than Hougaard. He deals with messy ball at the rucks more efficiently, and has a better kicking game

Wow - so passive Pienaar is a good decision maker and Reinach with his few steps before he passes is better than Hougaard.....if he was better, what happened to him against Wales
Hougaard is our best 9 with ease.......he proved that against Oz and NZ.
Apart from 3 or 4 poor passes against Ireland, he made all of 50 odd good ones.
Meyer will cock it up and select du Preez and Pienaar as our 9's and we will be on the plane home early thanks to selections like this along with a whole host of other pathetic selections.....including the return of Morne and Kirchner

Reinach made so many mistakes on the tour, he almost rivalled Hougaard who is really inept. And Pienaar, while much, much more competent technically....is not a warrior.
Reinach has a decent boot, tackles well in space and is dangerous in broken play. But is there any learning prospect at 25? Or are we going to see his non appearance behind the rucks, charge downs, step and pass efforts and woefully mistimed passes continue? Sadly the latter is most likely....he could have been a decent scrumhalf with a bit of rugby nous.

Mozart is going on about Reinach as if he is paid for the job. About half o f his statement on Reinach is unadulterated BS - the remainder is just plain BS.

Utter rubbish. Hougaard is a quality 9 as is Reinach. Both are far better than Pienaar. As for du Preez he provides squat other than a boot and a pass. He is a has been.
We have some quality young 9s about with Faf top of the list followed by v/Zyl, Groom, Schrauder and Luithers

Sure Dave Hougaard didn't make crucial mistakes that blew the matches against Wales and Ireland....all scrum halves fumble the ball on the opponents goal line.

Yes in crap conditions he threw 4 poor passes but made 50 good ones. He had little to do with the Welsh loss......funny what short memories you guys have for he was outstanding against tougher opposition in Oz and NZ a few weeks earlier.......its just the fact that Meyer's player investment is so poor that after one average game against Ireland, he discards the guy.......it was bad enough Hougaard got the chop but his treatment of Pollard sums Meyer up.

The loss to Wales was due to bad game plan and stupid on field choices. If someone should be blamed, it must be Meyer, Jean and Victor. Same for the Irish. We were stupid. End of.

I agree with DbDraad here - one player cannot be blamed for losses - unless he makes needless mistakes that cost the team points directly - like happened in the case of Morne Steyn in the Wallabies test in Perth.
Teams win or lose matches. Our forwards against both Ireland and Wales were under pressure and for that one must blame Meyer and his preference to play a Tight 4 combination as against the standard Tight 5 requirement.
I did not like what I saw of Hougaard in the NH conditions - and also in the AB test in Wellington where he came on to replace Pienaar. The latter is apparently injured again - I have not seen him in the Ulster team sheets recently, He definitely is not the player he used to be anymore - but neither is Fourie du Preez - who was very average in most matches he played for the Springboks recently.

Come now Draad, if a scrumhalf knocks on twice on the line (Ireland)....takes a tap kick for a penalty and then kicks directly into touch (Wales) he has contributed significantly to his team losses in two very tight tests.
