Let’s face it that apart from Jake White, the rest are pretty damn poor - a bunch of nobodies Where are the good SA coaches, if any? The only one I can think of is Ackerman now in Japan

Dave

You're so passionate about the game.

You have such tremendous insight

You are a WONDERFUL talent spotter

You are an average attorney

What made you choose your vocation? What were you thinking?

Why don't you pop down to your local pub side and get a few hours under your belt and try and go big with your coaching aspirations? Looking att your picture, you're in pristine condition and this have at least another 40 year s under your belt... think what you could achieve!

Sean Everett at the Sharks looks like he has potential. The Stormers coach is a donkey.
The Lions coach is still new, but so far it seems senior players like Jantjies are dictating the pattern of play.
Jake White won his first tournament and must start as favourites at the Bulls.

Play nice Dave. I don’t wanna get started on who gave me an erection tonight. In all seriousness, have you ever done any formal coaching? I spent a few years down at a nearby club coaching the U21 side. Brand new club. Lost our 1st 3 games and won the remaining 7 in a row. We were hammered by Germiston Simmers in the semis though. They were an old school outfit that stayed together since 8th grade.

I coached my sons club side from u13 to Colts. Got my level 2 in the process I also assisted my sons school side alongside Pete Engledow, my mate who went on to coach Griquas for a few seasons and is now the Paarl Boys coach I loved it but hung up the involvement once my son left school. The same son who studied sports science and coaching and is now a rugby coach who when he gets his level 3 will be the youngest ever in the UK to get level 3. Unfortunately COVID has got in the way of the course - it’s on hold for now. For me coaching was always about identifying talent, the greatest buzz was seeing a youngster having started as say a flanker and believing he had all the attributes of a centre and trying him there. Or seeing a kid blossom from the C side to the A side in a season. We all know how the game works for me the most important aspect of the game is identifying your best 15 and bench It’s why I love lists - I spend my life with teams in my head, with numerous variations. I get a kick out of watching the current U21 tournament, seeing the new talent coming through. It drives me mad seeing the Lions coach missing out on the talents of James Mollentze cutting up the U21 tournament while he pisses about with the likes of Dan Kriel and Ras as options at centre To say rugby is a passion is an understatement. I literally breathe the game. I go to sleep at night picking sides - counting sheep never worked for me!! Why did you stop coaching Chip? For me it was impossible to really get stuck into a club side. You only coached them one evening a week and then had them for their match on a Sunday. So you had so little time with them. Unlike a schools coach who had his side 4 days a week plus during game lessons during school and then matches on Saturday. You have the time to really invest in the boys. If I was 20 now I’d have definitely done what my son is doing and the funny thing is I had absolutely no influence in him choosing rugby coaching as a career. He played at a high level at school but was not in love with the game. He developed the love and passion for it playing at Uni

Dave

You  are 100% correct about the issue of team selection.     Although Meyer and Coetzee ay know something about coaching their team selection was putrid.   That was the reason why both pf them was fired by their clubs for gross incompetence.

One has to just look at the Springbok squad for 2015 to realize how really putrid Meyer was  in that department.   He picked 8 unplayable players in that squad  and destroyed whatever chances the Springboks had in the series.    The idea with a squad of 31 players is to give players time to rest during the series and after the  Japan disaster there were no rest days fir anybody

I will always remember one Meyer statement about selection dealing with Matfield's selection -  "I know what he was capable of  in the past".    With him actual performances counted for nothing and the duds on site supported his selections 100%.
