The question is how long are Sevens games?  The referees in both the Round Robin game and the final did the unforgivable.  In the Round Robin game the Referee gabe the NZ team a penalty in overtime when the game was already over and a NZ player held up in a tackle.
And in the final the game was over by 2 minutes when the Referee awarded a scrum to the AB's instead of blowing the final whistle.
That is crooked play in a desperate effort to ensure a home town win at all costs.
Sad to say - but this type of thing causes a bad taste.

Mike, why tell an untruth when it can so easily be disproved? The clock on TV was right on 00.00 when the SA player was flattened and lost the ball forward. The ref then awarded a scrum but the hooter didn't sound until several seconds later. Where do you get 2 minutes overtime you plonker???

It was not -it was clearly in the red by 00:20 minutes and then switched back to 00.00 afterwards. Whether it was on 00:00 or not the game was over when the ref decided on another scrum.  Still unethical in my mind.  That it happens twice in the same tournament makes it even more so.
Moola - go and watch the last few minutes of the game and you will see the number was 00:20 and afterwards changed to 00:00 where it remained afterwards.

And Mike, about the pool game; if you knew the laws at all you would know that the NZ player could not be ruled as held up as at least 2 players from his team need to be involved to call it a maul! This was confirmed by your own SA press!!

Moollaa - sorry - but the ggame was way over time already and that is the end of the story.  Both the issues were unethical and I looked at the timing device on TV again and the referee awarding that penalty to the AB's was BS in capital letters.
The AV's in both cases scored long distance tries becayse the referee wwas giving them a preference they did not deserve.

Rugby 365 contains an article that raises questions about the ref. Not sure who the author is & if he is unbiased.Rugby 365 article

Planet rugby had an article that said that several of the refs decisions raised outrage amongst SA supporters. Doesn't say if the outrage was justified.Planet Rugby

This article in the Roar does not mention a ref problems. The ROAR

NZ Herald doesn't mention ref problems either.
NZ Herald article

Articles I have read said it was a great game, some say SA dominated for most of the game. I hope to watch the semi and the final later. Bottom line it is in the books & both games were exciting stuff according to all.

.., another famous win by the almighty All Blacks....a thrilling game played in an empty stadium might suggest that next year they will shift it to Auckland...

..not so clevermike in answer to yr question how long is a Sevens game ??-  ten minutes each way in the final mate ... unfortunately there can be only one winner - us..

...still plenty of positives for SA with the blitzbok leading the competition by a good margin and a loss is probably a good thing given how big headed SA sportsmen become when they win anything

...but seriously plenty of speed and agility in yr team even if they were living dangerously offside the whole time-  they are still serious contenders for Gold at the Olympics...

Mike the dreamer, just got back home and saw my first replay of the Final. SA player was actually smashed and lost the ball forward with EIGHT seconds remaining on the clock so explain why you blatantly lied and said it was TWO minutes over time and later changed your fairytale to 20 seconds over time??I now understand why Mozart has so many problems with you when honesty is not your friend!!

Look at the timing of the game.  The kick in was made with 26 seconds on the watch and the actual offence was committed two seconds after the game was over and done.
Look at the following article as well:-
"Cape Town – Another year ... and another Australasian rugby referee for South Africans to get hopping mad about.

Weekend public enemy No 1 in living rooms on these shores, it seems, is Aussie (though via New Zealand) official Matt O’Brien following Sunday’s heart-stopping, last-gasp 24-21 reverse by the Blitzbokke to hosts NZ in the final of the Wellington leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

It would also have given South African enthusiasts little comfort that the 34-year-old referee is the son of Paddy O’Brien, former head of the IRB (now World Rugby) Referee Board and not always the most popular whistle-man here during his own heyday.

Since O’Brien snr’s era on the park, other Antipodean officials to raise the hackles of South African critics and fans over the years – either at Test or Super Rugby level -- have included Stuart Dickinson, Paul Honiss, Bryce Lawrence, George Ayoub, Rohan Hoffmann and Matt Goddard.

Matt O’Brien plies his trade as an Aussie, after relocating to the Gold Coast there in adult life, but he was born and raised in Southland, New Zealand, so social media in South Africa was not shy to lament “home-town decisions” – and sometimes resort to much stronger language than that -- in the wake of the showpiece outcome.

In truth, an inevitable game-changer was the yellow-carding of in-form Blitzbokke dynamo Rosco Speckman with just under four minutes left on the clock after he had tracked back a long way for a try-saving tackle but then played the ball from the ground in an off-side position under pressure – there could be relatively few quibbles about that professional-foul ruling.

The Blitzbokke were leading 21-7 at the time but their reduction to six men for two critical minutes as he sat in the “bin” effectively ended up being the lifeline the hosts needed, and they scored three tries to somehow pull the game out of the fire.

South Africans had reason to feel more irate, though, about many of the borderline decisions that appeared to almost unfailingly go the New Zealand way during the nerve-jangling encounter.

By Sport24 count, O’Brien gave the hosts eight penalties to one, generally at the breakdown and on a couple of occasions earning the displeasure – as captured by the television cameras – of a head-shaking South African sideline contingent led by coach Neil Powell.

There were at least three instances of possible forward passes by New Zealand players going unnoticed, whereas at a key juncture of the second half, with the Blitzbokke seemingly set for a game-killing score, O’Brien was able to find reason for suggesting Seabelo Senatla had spilled the ball forward in a heavy tackle as a team-mate gathered the still aerial ball and sprinted toward the whitewash.

The official may well also have allowed to go unpunished an early tackle in the air on Kwagga Smith as he gathered a kick-off, and a ridiculously skew throw-in to a NZ-fed scrum which allowed them to begin the counter-attack eventually leading to the decisive try after the clock had stopped counting down.

A flood of angry tweets from South Africans followed the final whistle, suggesting the Blitzbokke had been diddled.

One came from renowned sports scientist Ross Tucker (@Scienceofsport) who said: “Sevens a great spectacle, great addition to Olympics, but refereeing remains at high school level. Wait for a buffoon to decide Olympic gold (in Rio later this year – Sport24).

“My suggestion would be one ref in each half looking exclusively at ruck contests, a third to control general play. Accuracy non-negotiable.”

Tucker later partially retracted the sentiments from his first tweet: “So I shouldn’t have used the word buffoon. It’s a systemic, not personal problem. But until it’s prioritised, I worry about its implications.”

Plenty of South African couch potatoes were clearly not in a mood for such forgiveness over O’Brien’s handling of the final.

Consolation for the eleventh-hour loss was the Blitzbokke heading the series standings after being losing finalists – they have 54 points, followed by Fiji on 52 and New Zealand on 47."
Appointing O'Brien as the referee in the final was a total disaster in any event.  He is the son of one of the biggest crooks who ever reffed rugby games and a NZ to boot,  The appointment should have been a neutral ref - which was not the case.

Mike you are a pathetic liar! So TWO MINUTES OVER TIME suddenly became 20 SECONDS OVER TIME and now all of a sudden it's mysteriously reduced to 2 SECONDS OVER TIME!! Which one is it Mike?I defy anyone to prove to me that the heavy tackle and consequent spill forward didn't occur with 8 seconds left on the clock or are your clocks different in SA?Note Mike that with all the whingeing in the article you've posted, nowhere does the writer complain about this dreamed up issue of yours. If it happened how you said then surely this would have been the first point raised?? Case closed and just admit you got caught out badly mate!!

The issue I raised was missed because people did not watch the timing indicated.  How come the time was switched back from 2 seconds to zero seconds - where it remained for the rest of the game.   Sorry - it was not 2 minutes - but 2 seconds and that is what I wr ote afterwards - correcting myself.
Sorry - but I think that the mess was made and it is likely that it would be guarded against in future.   Will not happen again that an NZ ref is appointed to referee a game between NZ and SA and that being a final in a tournament.
Sorry to differ from you in this case - so let sleeping dogs lie.  Was just upset when I started the thread and hope that is the end of it.

That is impossible.  The ball is kicked in with 27 seconds left.   Carried virtually 50 meters  down field after being passed a couple of times and there is 8 seconds left on the clock.     The clock showed 2 seconds in the red when the tackle and subsequent forward pass occurred.   That clock was immediately switched back to OO:0O and that is where it remained for the rest of the game.
You can look at the last few seconds of the game again and see what happened to the clock on the TV screen.  When that scrum was awarded is after the 2 seconds over the time elapsed and that is a fact. Sorry - I looked specifically at the sequence three times and that is not what was on the clock - neither was the scrum awarded when there was 8 seconds left.

Here's a tip to help, count down the seconds from the kickoff at 8:55 in the video and watch what happens to the clock with 10 seconds to go....the tackle that causes the knock on happens with 8 seconds left on the clock.
What a f&cking mongoloid.

Look at the following aricle as well:-

Following his team’s agonising defeat to New Zealand in the Cup Final of the Wellington Sevens, Blitzboks coach Neil Powell plans to sit down with World Rugby’s referees to clear up some issues.

South Africa suffered a 24-21 Cup Final loss after the hosts scored a try after the hooter had sounded.

South Africa led 21-7 deep into the second half, but a yellow card for Rosco Specman cost the Blitzboks dearly as the Kiwis used their one-man advantage to get back into the contest.

The Blitzboks were heavily punished at the breakdown area by referee Matt O'Brien, a New Zealander now based in Australia.

The referee had also called back South Africa - saying that Seabelo Senatla had lost the ball forward in a tackle, after it popped into the hands of Cheslin Kolbe - with the SA flyer having a clear run to the line.

Powell, unable to publicly criticise match officials, felt his team was "unlucky" not to emerge victorious.

"We had bad luck this whole weekend with calls from the referee, it didn't go our way," Powell was quoted as saying by Rugby365.

He added that they will sit down with the referees and see how they can improve.

"If we make mistakes at the rucks, (we need to know) how can we improve that. We got penalised a lot around the rucks."

Actually he was, the ref was from Australia, the fact that he was of Kiwi heritage is by the by, are you suggesting we should be checking family trees now when appointing referees, how many generations should we go back before you consider a ref 'neutral', besides do you think NZ appointed the ref for the final?
Oh so neutral observers can't critically review a refs performance because they don't have a dog in the fight?  You're dreaming, and as long as you blame the ref for every loss and not recognising your own short comings you'll never improve, as fans or as players.

Barnacle's post @

www.supersupporter.net

With the score at 21-7,
1. Hougaard goes in to protect the ball with 4:18 mins left and places both hands on the ground. (A clear penalty).
2. From the following play (3:57 min left) Juan de Jongh (not the ref) rushes out of the line leaving a huge gap for Gillies Kaka to waltz through.
3. Hougaard (not the ref) misses the cover tackle
4. With 3:43 mins left Speckman clearly takes the ball while still on the ground (a definite yellow card - professional foul)
5. With 3:34 min left Senatla (not the ref) rushes out of the defensive line, leaving the outside player unopposed
6. With 2:17 left Juan de Jongh falls to the wrong side and hold on to the ball (a clear penalty)
7. With 1:37 left Kwagga Smit comes from the side (which is now allowed), but takes the ball and binds on the player on the ground). He is cleared out and then keeps holding on to the ball, while off his feet.
8. With 0:00 left on the clock Senatla hold on to the tackled player and never attempts to release (another clear penalty).
9. After that, they never defend the fringes of the ruck (not the ref's duty)...

And this is a post I made on facebook

"Springbok/Blitzbok supporters resorting to "Blame the ref" just reflects the general South African self-entitlement disease... "I/WE am/are NEVER to blame for our own mistakes". "I/WE DEMAND everything on a silver platter...". The moment we pull our collective fingers out of our own arses and start to WORK, everything will get better...Sorry to say it, but the general South African mindset is pathetic!"

I also read in the paper about three penalties that led to the last try... That is how it was reported, as "FACT". There was in fact only ONE penalty that led to the last try, the Senatla penalty. And the public fall for these whines... The whole fucking pathetic South African society is now following the great example set by our leaders... I propose a new verb for South African English... "zuma". To be used in the following context... "I zuma the result" - Meaning the result was due to no fault of my own, but it was due to the referee/apartheid/a conspiracy/my skin colour/or any other suitable excuse that may be able to shift the blame....

 poi-e,
1. I have not said anything about the ref's performance, I said I would like to see the match first.2. Yes, the ref was an Ozzie, the son of Paddy O'brian and you don't have to be a genius or a genealogy expert to connect the dots.3. No, NZ did not appoint the ref, and yes there was nothing sinister or even remotely wrong about his appointment for the match, yet it would have been prudent to appoint somebody else.4. The fact that "neutral observers" has not evaluated the ref yet, does not mean they won't, its just natural that the owner of the dog that got wounded in the fight complains first.
I'm wide awake and if look what I have written, you will see that I haven't said anything about his performance, I just question his neutrality. There is a reason why neutral refs are used, not so?

Blob, while I value Barnacle's opinion and I suspect that the Blitzbokke were probably the architects of that loss, it does still not mean that the ref did not do his bit too. I'll reserve judgement till I've seen the whole match. From what I've heard, the main turning point was the 100% Legit yellow against us. I also suspect that the ref played a much less significant role in the defeat than the general fans perceive it to be...if any at all.
