How to deal with power outages /blackouts

After some foo l hit a power pole and left us without power for an hour and reading how our saffa friends suffer from 'lload shedding " I devised this plan to help y'all out . When the lights go out get as many people as possible to put their hands in the air, 'like they just dont care is good .Because as we all know many hands make light work ! .Hope this helps lighten  the mood on this somewhat gloomy site of late .Any other enlightening  rejoinders would be welcome .

 Candles and lanterns work better...generator even more so.

Solar heating in SA ?  With the climate the demand must be huge ?

 All that stuff works better but its not as funny as a bunch of silly buggers caught out with their hands in the air !

Blo, solar would be huge here. Only we don't really need heating. If houses were insulated correctly they'd get warmed up during the day and stay above 15 at night indoors. As far as water heating goes, air source heat pumps are the boss. They are over unity devices, in the same way that hydroelectric dams are. X amount of energy to install and then over time they collect more heat/energy than what it takes to run them. Power outages aren't long enough to warrant installing solar for electric. Most people either use batteries that are charged off mains and kick in when the power goes off, or generators. SA is so far behind that we don't have condensing geysers yet. In other words...we are using 50% more gas than we need to. My company will be selling these units in SA as of next year. Also, not sure if anyone knows but i heard that Eskom got a R10Bln investment last year. They wont be able to pay that back and the grid will end up in the hands of foreign investors. That's obviously both good and bad. But more bad if you ask me.
