Hurricanes drop ABs for breaking curfew

  Video

All Blacks Julian Savea, Cory Jane and Victor Vito are among five players dropped from the Hurricanes side to play the Reds on Saturday for breaching team protocol.

The trio, as well as Ardie Savea and reserve prop Chris Eves, were not considered for selection against the Reds after breaking the team's self-imposed curfew. The five players were late back to the team hotel on the Tuesday night before the side played the Sharks and have been stood down for one match.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said the players had made a poor decision and the matter had been dealt with internally.

"Though some people may not see staying out late as being particularly serious, the team set their standards very high this year and everyone bought into that at the start of the season," he said. "We have a great bunch of guys in the squad and this was an isolated incident, but there are certain lines in the sand and when those lines are crossed there are consequences.

"The players involved know they made a mistake and I'm pretty confident they will be motivated to make up for that when they become available for selection again next week."

It's not the first time Jane has been sanction for breaching team standards. Jane and fullback Israel Dagg, who was injured at the time, mixed sleeping pills and energy drinks three days before the All Blacks' 2011 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

Julian Savea was also dropped from the Hurricanes earlier this season for not meeting fitness standards.

Last week's episode came ahead of the disappointing 32-15 loss to the Sharks in Durban, a defeat which deflated a team which had risen to new heights the week before when beating the Lions 50-17 in Johannesburg.

Just as well that they weren't dropped for the Sharks game ......... probably would've copped a 75 point hiding .

...Hard to fathom how the Sharks actually beat the Canes at all...wasn't so much a case of the Sharks being good as the Canes playing like zombies....one that got away from the Canes unfortunately ...looks like they were having too much fun in Durban and forgot what they were there for...

Sounds like kiwi damage cotrol after their top side or thereabouts got soundly whipped by the sharks. They were clever about this though as saying their guys were ill disciplined and out late at night  carousing sounds of course very plausible.Hahahhahahahahaha Brycy and Jw ,my good friends, lets not look for unseemly excuses now. The poor hurricanes were battered to defeat by a better side. Beeno bring much needed perspective!

Brycy, was it on the Friday night that they stayed out too late? If not, then I'm not sure how they could be "zombies". I suppose any excuse will do. Of course no SA team could legitimately beat a NZ side. Beginning to have less and less respect for the kiwis on this board.

there are 2 threads with the same issue,........ as the other one has already 59 replies and the original theme was a different one, may be it's better to continue in this one,..... so I copy my other answer here:

before knowing that the curfew break was a 18 minutes late arrival I thought that that was a very stupid way of conducting a missbehaviour by the Hurricanes,....... now I think it's one of the most stupid things I've ever seen,....

to begin with in their first statements the Hurricanes said that "the players had made a poor decision and the matter had been dealt with internally",........... please, someone to tell the Hurricanes management that when you make an issue public (as it's been this case) then it's no more an internal issue,........ public and internal are antonims

to continue with, even in the case that the players through their conduct made a damage to the team (which now we know is not the case) it's plain stupid to punish the franchise (or the team) and the supporters,....... dropping 5 key players for an important match (from now on, all are importants) is damaging the franchise and the supporters (if I were a canes' fan and had bought a ticket I would demand a refund of it, no doubt),...... there are other ways of punishing the players without punishing the franchise and the supporters,...... e.g. to fine them heavily (or according to the missconduct) and not making it public

and now the hurricanes management say that:

-"The five players are understood to have missed a prescribed curfew by 18 minutes"

-"the quintet were back at the team hotel before midnight."

-"the five players were not drunk and had not committed any remotely anti-social acts, they were simply late home."

really?
as I said this is one of the most stupid things I've ever seen,....... arriving 18 minutes late is a completely insignificant infraction,........ it didn't affect the trainings, nor the players' condition, let alone the team's performance on saturday's game,.......... it should have been dealed internally (but trully internally) but instead the hurricanes management created a public affair from an insignificance putting the Hurricanes themselves and the 5 players in question,.......

I think I've never seen a worst managing of a minor problem

the Hurricanes managenent (I don't know if it's something coming from Boyd, from the CEO or whoever) by themselves, and only by themselves, has turn a very minor problem into a huge and public one,......... there are more comments about it than in any other rugby news and almost all of them are the kind of:

"Idiots and losers all of them. Great team mates."

"Why am I not surprised Cory Jane's name is there? Idiots!"
Idiots and losers all of them. Great team mates.""This is the problem with Ardie Savea. Great talent on the field but you have to question his attitude off it. "

"I believe most people yesterday would have expected Julian Savea to be one of the five players named. Not surprised at all. Needs to sort himself out."

This seems the Spanish Inquisition,....... for arriving 18 minues late!!!!!!!!!
but there are also comments about the Canes themselves:

"Shame that, Canes showing they think they're bigger than the game while sitting 4th in NZ conference,"

"Some teams know how to be winners, some teams just hope to be winners. Only NZ franchise not to win the Super rugby competition."

the Hurricanes franchise, the team and the players put in question,...... could this minor problem have been handled worst? I doubt it very much

Ardie was due for a rest anyway but I agree making this whole thing public was the wrong thing to do, especially when they were only 18 minutes late.

Beeno hasn't had much to crow about lately so who can begrudge him having a go now?

Is that a diaper he's wearing?

Beginning to have less and less respect for you Mr Plum ,whats going on with you ? You seem like a decent enough fella ,just check out how little crowing by the Kiwis on here considering the results our teams have .Considering its your folks at SARU who have rigged the whole comp to give the bools and stormers a helping hand by avoiding the NZ teams and giving themselves a nice easy run to a guaranteed home playoff I reckon us Kiwis could easily lose respect for SA rugby. And considering its an internal  Hurricanes decision its got feck all to do with anyone else ,but I am realy p!ssed off at Ardie stuffing up my fantasy team !Hey beandik laugh it up over the saffa results for the last oh I dunno 7 years is it since your mob won anything of significance ? Canes are the only NZ team not to win a super trophy the inverse of the Bools being the only SA team to win it .Not crowing just pointing out historical fact to shut beandork up .
