If you were selecting a WC squad
Mine would be:
15. Willie / Gelant
14/11. Mapimpi / Nkosi / Kolbe / Arendse
13/12. de Allende / Am / Esterhuizen / JVR / Willemse
10. Pollard / Libbok
9. Faf / Hendrikse
1/3. Ox / Kitshoff / Malherbe / Thomas du Toit / Wilco Louw
2. Marx / Mbonambi
4/5. Etzebeth / Jason Jenkins / Lood / RG Snyman
6/7/8. Kolisi / Kwagga / PSDT / JL du Preez / Wiese / Dan du Preez / Roos
Standby 15 would be:
15. Fassi
14/11. Tambwe / Zas
13/12. Jessie Kriel / Serfontein
10. Jantjies
9. Nohamba
1/3. Gerhard Steenkamp / Sadie
2. Dweba
4/5. Moerat / Ruben v Heerden
6/7/8. Buthelezi / Vincent Tsituka / Elrigh Louw
Not important enough to have an actual coach do it apparently.
If you had more than one brain cell you could rub them together to start a fire to illuminate your cretaceous period hollow, maybe then these exchanges would be more fruitful for you!
You can only have 5 loose forwards because teams normally have 3 hookers and 3 scrummies.
It would have been great if we had a more versatile hookers and scrum halves that could cover more than one position. However, standby players can be added relatively easy if a player gets a serious injury.
Gelant has now been demoted. If he was in SA I would select him but I would make Willemse my backup 15. We also have Arendse and Moody that can cover those positions as well as Kolbe. Although, both Kolbe and Arendse is a bit too small for me to have both in the back 3.
I would start with who would be my starting 15.
- Kitshoff - Du Toit
- Marx - Bongi - Grobbler
- Malherbe - Louw
- Etzebeth - Jenkins
- Lood - PSDT - Mostert
- Kolisi - Kwagga
- Kwagga
- Wiese - Roos
- Faf - Hendriksen - Zak Burger
- Pollard - Libbok
- Moody
- Esterhuizen - Dud
- Am - JVS
- Kolbe - Arendse
- Willie - Willemse
I like the idea of moving Dud back to lock. He could function there, but can he take his lineout ball? I’d love to have seen Etzebeth at 5. I think he is athletic enough to pull it off and that would open the door for another monster at 4. Still it’s a brave man who would switch positions for the world’s best number 4.
