With 11 odd years of losing out in major competitions is there a massive mental choking going on at the WP rugby union

just as the proteas has the potential of being amazing is the stormers also in the same boat as the SA proteas in regards to winning the games that really matter. spanning back 11 years it always seems that the crucial must win games the stormers or wp generally just dont pitch up and win. they are the biggest enigma in sa rugby at the moment.

after years of having decent performances they cream of winning a major cup has eluded them. having amazing depth and great player resources has not changed there fortunes

unlike the snorting cokehead mark keohane wants people to believe the stormers playing style has even been change in respect to break this drought but instead of buildiing a complete playing style they have been religated to playing a 1980's trench warfare game that under the new ELV's is cinical and daft to say the least. much to the dismay of the one eyed stormers fan boys thats being brainwashed by AC political jiving.

all i know is there will come a point and time that the media or AC can spin the platant fact that the stormers are on a path to nowhere if nothing major is change.

CMuncher lets be accurate about this. We have won two SA Conference trophies and that means MORE than any Currie Cup success. What in your book counts as a major trophy then.

I cannot find the Super Rugby Conferenece Cup/Trophy on this list of important Rugby Trophies:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union_trophies_and_awards

I do see the Currie Cup, though.

More and More teams will work out how to beat the Stormers defence. The Sharks, Reds and Crusaders can.

Once this happens it is all downhill for our cape friends......

I stand corrected...

The Reds of Australia, the Stormers of South Africa and the Crusaders of New Zealand were the winners of their respective conferences and were each presented with a scaled-down copy of the trophy.

windpomp what real rugby man thinks the Currie Cup is of a higher standard than Super Rugby.

The teams play at full strength barring injuries in Super Rugby. At Currie Cup the Boks hardly play etc, WP had a bunch of kids playing last year. Witness who won the Currie Cup last year and where they came on the Super Rugby log!! Hahahhahahahahahaha

Get real windpomp. You are bogged down in yester year!  Next we will be hearing the Vodacom Cup is more worth than the SA Conference winners trophy!!!!

I am a coloured boytjie living in Grassy Park.

I am not a racist...

I am in fact half black myself!!

My photo is of Bongani Khumalo... SA Soccer player.

Next time, please dont jump to conclusions!

I was just having some (non racial) fun at the name!

Anyway... have a good evening!

This type of stereotype is offensive and completely unneccessary and only speaks of a extremely childish and racist character.

If this is type of post is allowed on this website I would be extremely dissapointed in the Admins.

Winning the SA conference is a much bigger feat then winning the Currie cup. But winning the SA conference doesn't include playing any elimination games. It gets you a top three spot on the log. Winning your conference is a success, but is not the ultimate success.

After watching one year of Super Rugby, It's pretty obvious the Stormers need to tweek their gameplan.

Saying all that, I would rather have my team be first in the SA conference and not win the currie cup, then have my team win the currie cup, and have a season like the Lions did in Super Rugby.

Fine comments by Bongani and Canned Rugby.

Bongani you will find a few excitable folk here which is nice as it livens things up. But take the comments made with a pinch of salt.

Canned Rugby you left out what is really the most meritorious of achievements. Topping the log!!!

Like Keo said there should be a trophy for topping the log. Knockout rugby involeves a lot of luck  (Russian roulette stuff) and undoes a whole season of fine work if you happen to lose by 1 point or 7 points in our case if what these knockers are saying were remotely true. But of course its not even romotely true.

The fact is the Currie Cup is a third tier competition these days so just get used to that windpom and fellow travellors if there ar eanyas loonie as to follow windpom in this matter. Nice to win but not to be compared to a SA Conference win and definitely not to be even remotely compared to topping the Super Rugby table!!!

End of story.  Please all you knockers go and have another look a tthe Super Rugby log. You will find it on the home page. Study it carefully. Note where the Stormers are and where your team is. Hhahahahahaha that should sober up these duds!

Then excercise all due respect to the Mighty Stomers and their elite supporters. The Might yStormers Top SA side this year and no question about it. Even if Sharks win it.

So please Sharkbo,Stu 5 and the other chest beating (concave chests by now) guppies - wipe the star dust from your eyes and focus, as Draad so wisely said (and as I have also already said) focus on the chiefs. We do not want the Chiefs whipping you guys. A sit satands the Chiefs are hugely relieved not to be coming to Newlands (have dreaded this prospect) to meet their Waterloo. You give them a surprise by showing what our second best side can do!! Hahhahahahahaha - a season guppies rather than one match decides such issues. Seems reasonable to me.

Beeno keeping the record staright and taking no lip from erring guppies and fellow travellors. I must add a word of thanks though to my guppies friends for the very ample opportuntities made availablee to me to correct any false impressions re the Stormers/sharkies match. Their constant protests has facilitated the process. Hahahahahha the sharkies dont even know when they are being helpful!!

Go sharkies be inspired by the fact Beeno is supporting you along with the other fine Stormers sportsmen on the board.

Look, the Bulls were nowhere this year, and Beans, I don't know what Bulls legends you are carrying on about, cos they all retired/left at the end of last year. If anything, the Bulls over achieved this year, because there was really very little expected of them, yet they still finished 5th. As for the Stormers, I am sorry, conference winner, while still a decent achievement, is actually the most forgettable trophy in rugby! It means nothing! It was a stupid little reward created for the Auzzies because they have no Currie Cup etc to sort out the provincial champions. Seriously, it is like topping your group at the World cup, a decent achievement, but nobody can remember who won the groups....cos without the World cup trophy, it doesn't matter.

Winners settle for nothing but winning, losers are glad to "achieve" stupid things like conference trophies....when we all know, they are still losers if they have not won the tournament.

Beeno "The Might yStormers Top SA side this year and no question about it. Even if Sharks win it."

Bwahahahaha LMFAO LOL etcetc. You can't be serious!!! Lets think about it, if the Sharks do win the tournament on Saturday, nobody will EVER remember the Stormers topping the group!! They'll remember the Sharks won against all the odds, and that they WON THE SUPER RUGBY TROPHY!! End of story.

All people will remember about the stormers is that they should have done better, but that they choked....again!

Bluebok the truth does not depend on the memories of fallible human beings. It dependes more on things like facts and reason.

Anyone thinking winning the Currie Cup these days is better than winning the SA Conference is way, way out for very obvious reason that have mentioned

Topping the log or wining the Super Rugby trophy is a bit like the World Cup  argument. To me the side who tops the rankings the most is the best side NOT the side who happens to win the world cup lottery - which may or may not produce a winner who was the best over  a short month or so of competition.

Memories, record books, commentators, players, unions...nobody will care who won the conference, only the Super Rugby cup. The fact that you place such importance on the conference trophy shows that you are so used to the Stormers lack of real achievements, that you'll take whatever you can get. Look, it may sound like I am having a go, but I really am not. Western Province just seem to have lost the winning mindset of years gone by. It is a deadly place to be, the Sharks seem to finally have broken free of the "choker' tag, even if it only through winning the Currie cup. Ps. I don't think the Currie Cup has as much relevance anymore, in fact, I think there is a strong argument for making it a first division trophy, with our top level players playing only Super Rugby and internationals...but that is a whole other argument.

As i have said elsewhere, like it or not, tournament trophies are all that count, World Cup, Tri Nations, Super Rugby, even players and all people in the know, remember the winners...Knock out or cup tournaments may not be your favourite format, but true Champions still win them.

the level of arrogance from the stormers supporters are nothing short of a farce. the self proclaimed title of the mighty stormers just shows either a high level of being delusional or just plain ignorance. the bulls is by far the benchmark for any other team to aim for. they have won the super cup 3 times....no conference/noddy cups involved beeno. this is the pinnacle of domestic rugby and is the only test of being the best. high pressure stuff and not meant for the faint hearted. as sharks boytjie myself i only wished to have that level of a record.

CC is the toughest local comp in the world. many can state and affirm that fact. so how come a wp full bok side lost to the lions last year ????....

to be fair the stormers does have a problem and it seems the ego self centered stormers supporters like to live in fairy tale land just not te look at the cold hard facts that there beloved team is nothing more than a great team dumped down by inept coaches and poor management. so much so that they oversell the fact of winning irrelvant cups that mean nothing in the bigger scheme of things.

just as the coke ranger mark keohane likes to post about how mighty the stormers are when in fact they are nothing more than just a bunch of great talented players led into darkhole.

the bulls are rebuilding and will be a champ side in 2 odd years. what there generation of players achieved for rugby in this country is something to respect. winning every cup there is to win is a tough act to follow. they will be back. my sharks team can also ahieve that but they need to work on aspects of there player depth ext to compete game in and game out.

Very well said CarpetM! Never really thought about it that way, but the Bulls/Bulls players of the last 7 or so years really did help put South Arican rugby in a good place. I think some of the players stayed on a little past their respective sell-by dates, but history will remember them as greats regardless. Not too sure about the Bulls at the moment, because I feel they still need to get rid of plenty of deadwood, but I am sure they have a plan going forward. Just one last point about the Bulls this year, please don't forget that they lost half their coaching team halfway through the season, when Meyer called them up to the Springbok setup. It was also after that that the Bulls fell of the pace somewhat. Still, they were never going to win the trophy (The one that counts)

i agree but the bulls have won the super rugby 3 times. while the so self proclaimed mighty stormers has none in 11 years. i am just realistic emotions aside. if one look at the numbers the bulls has major BMT were the stormers has just the T because the BM has gone wondering. they are playing a way more better brand of rugby then years come by and are building where i feel the sharks's game plan is really at the peak of its powers. the sharks just need more depth in players. the likes of pienaar and goosen i feel will just add to that depth to really make the sharks team close to perfect. they have 15 world class players but need more depth in real quality players to cover for injuries ext i feel.

this all to the betterment of SA rugby that all the unions are at high level. bulls are on a spending spree and that will give them depth.
