Former top ref Francis says Sanzaar too soft on Gary Gold

RICHARD KNOWLER

Last updated 17:49, April 6 2016

Ex-whistler Bob Francis has questioned whether Sanzaar should have consulted World Rugby following revelations Gary Gold abused the television match official when the Crusaders played in Durban on March 27.

Francis, a former top New Zealand referee who later joined the selection panel for several World Cups, is of the belief Sharks coach Gold got off lightly when he was fined $15,000 by Sanzaar for breaching the Super Rugby competition rules by approaching and using crude and insulting language towards TMO Johan Greeff on two occasions in the final quarter of the match at King's Park.

Sharks coach Gary Gold abused TMO Johan Greeff in the 65th and 71st minutes of the match against the Crusaders in Durban. He copped a $15,000 fine.

The incident wasn't made public until Sanzaar issued a missive 10 days after the game, stating they had completed an investigation and had referred the matter for a hearing in accordance with their disciplinary rules.

Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC, via teleconference, found Gold guilty of misconduct, issuing the fine and formally reprimanded him.

Francis believes Gold got off lightly.

Although Gold has since apologised to Greeff, Francis said that wasn't good enough. He asked why the matter wasn't referred to the game's governing body.

"World Rugby have intervened in some extreme cases lately and I think this is a question that probably should have been asked of them," Francis said. "Should they have stepped in over the top of Sanzaar in a case like this?

" It's an absolute disgrace and deserves a severe response from Sanzaar. "

Although Sanzaar has issued fines to coaches in the past, they have been reluctant to suspend them. In 2014 Waratahs coach Michael Cheika copped a suspended six month ban for giving a TV camera operator a spray. It was alleged Cheika approached referee Jaco Peyper during the halftime break last year, but Sanzaar didn't punish him.

This situation, where a coach has approached a TMO during a match, is thought to be the first of its kind since Super Rugby began in 1996.

While there have been incidents involving coaches approaching referees in their changing room or the players' tunnel, it is believed no coaches have been reprimanded from the competition's governing body for leaving their station to abuse the TMO. Yet players, if found guilty of misconduct, go for a skate.

Francis wondered whether it was time for rugby to follow the example of some professional football bodies and issue harsher penalties to coaches.

"This (the Gold incident) is right at the top-end," Francis added. "The TMO's box is out of bounds for coaches and if that has been compromised, then I think we have a major problem.

"This would be a first (a coach going into the TMO's box) in my knowledge for world rugby, and a step too far really. A fine is hardly a reasonable penalty ... It's a pretty soft response. I don't think it is good enough."

besides,... if Gold was a NZ coach and the opponent was from South Africa he would have copped a ban.Sad to say this issue is not dealt with on a square and fair basis and is a bit of an embarrassment since the playing field is not level and favour SA team s beyond others.

I am sure Beeno will take up the cause & campaign against this sort of hooliganism from Gold

Both he and the over rated loud mouthed cheika should be sharing the naughty box for a season or 2.That will stop that nonsense in its tracks. And I hope TMOs in future give golds team an extra dollop of ars.e whooping as a reminder to keep his ugly dial to himself .

Another disgraceful action that deserves a very servere response, see the video on Silvere Tian: "… the Oyonnax winger completely lost any trace of his cool. Word of advice – telling Poite “you’re pissing me off” after being yellow carded isn’t going to go down well. A long ban surely awaits, especially after Tian’s actions on the touchline at the end of the game. Madness."

If you take into account that the Stormers bench staff were fined more for chirping the assistant reff, and some of the chirps were lost in translation, Gold got off very light. I'm a bit ashamed that a Saffa stooped so low.

RICHARD KNOWLER is a nz twit so right at the start one has to be very careful giving any credence to what he says re reffing as he comes from a bunch of legendary cheats - as I have had the pleasure of pointing out over the years. The big question is actually not Gold and his misdemeanors but rather where this twit is to be found when all these nz ref in pocket types get to work fulfilling their get the Jarpie agenda.
My highly unesteemed but good  friend brycy says - "Johan Greef has a history of bad blood with the Sharks, as seen in this video where the Bulls played the Sharks last year." Well perhaps the nz oaks got to Greef with some big money. This clealry incnesed Gold who has never done this before. Greef looks like a bad apple in an basket of good apples. SA refs are generally highly valued for their competence and fair blowing.

Beeno as usual providing guidance and perspective to JW and the other kbbs!

Basque, you are to the NZ side if this board what Beeno is to the SA side. Both of you are biased beyond logic. Though, since I an SA, I'd have to be 51% with Beens and 49% with you. Gold is an idiot. One of those guys that keeps getting worse and worse yet seems to get better job each year. Currently the worst of the crop in SA. His team won't once score more than 40 points this year. But it's fine, because he's using the Meyer template and the Shark's poor year will be the final nail in the coffin of BS cowardly rugby in SA. Refs need abusing sometimes. They are held in way too high esteem for my liking considering how many bunk calls they make. Beeno, surely you are not talking about Joubert when you rate our SA refs so highly? He is bent as all hell. Just ask France.

 @plum,

the one who put himself at Beeno's level was mike,...... who in this thread (8. Poc ock banned for three weeks) wrote:

"Poc ock did something serious involving a New Zealand player so he must be punished severely - if a NZ player did the same they would not even be charged leave alone banned."

"What about a charge laid against Cane and summarily dismissed by the judiciary committee.  If Cane was an SA or Australian player and the opponent was from new Zealand he would have copped a ban.
Sad to say this issue is not dealt with on a square and fair basis and is a bit of an embarrassment since the playing field is not level and favour NZ players beyond others."

I just use his last two underlined sentences (changing Cane for Gold and SA for NZ) to try to show him the nonsense of his reasoning (if we can call it such):

seems that it was difficult to join the dots,....... I was a little bit stoned when I wrote it,.....

apart from that, I think it's very grave that a coach entered twice in the TMO cabinet to intimidate him and should have been penalised more severely

Just 80 or so pages into Carter's book. Seems the young NZ players were boozed  to the gills,  stole money from their parents, destroyed rental apartments and had a great old time throwing stones through windows. Not sure about the stealing, but I suppose we would find similar offenses among the young SA set. What you wouldn't find is Basque's angry morality....tiresome.

Plum you obviously dont know beandork too well ,he never has anything to say about NZ ,its people ,the ABs or their fans that wasnt derogatory in some way so I would say that puts him light years away from ABasque fan as far as bias goes .Pointing out that yet another coach has got off lightly after abusing or trying to influence match officials is hardly bias.As far as Cane is concerned unlike Golds actions it was disputed and he was found to have no case to answer to .And if you want to go down that route I can point out way more players from other teams including from SA who have either got away without any action taken against them or got off lightly .

Wardad. Just saying, I try to remain objective. I hate crap calls and I hate unfair decisions. If my team win on the back of some very "fortunate" calls from the ref, I'm normally the first one to say so. It's cool to supports one boys. But there is something bigger and more important than patriotism and camaraderie. It's the thing that holds it all together. Well, that's my view anyway. Gold is a knob face. Plain and simple. Actually though, when I think about it. Maybe Saffes are a bit too harsh on our own sometimes. One look at this board is proof of that. Whether that means that we're A-holes or just that we call a spade a spade, i dunno. And really, I can't off the top of my head recall any NZ lads on here ever calling BS on their own players, managers or fans. I guess you are all just very happy with the state of things down there. One thing I'll ask you to look for in future, and tell me what you think. Watch Ben Smith when he chases high balls. I swear he tries to flying kick the defender out of the air. I've noticed that he seems to do it much more aggresively in internationals. I'm gonna try and find a video of it.

There is no way that you guys can seriously condone a coach going into the TMO box & screaming at the TMO & he did it twice.
Why doesn't Gold just ask for his own chair next to the TMO? This would save him waddling over there whenever he feels a tantrum coming on

Beens, the thing that makes me not trust Joubert is that he is a seriously good ref. He has a great eye. So when he fails to make calls that he is 2 meters from and looking at directly, I can't help but think that he's purposefully making the wrong call or failing to make a call. Here is a video I could find about Ben Smith. Yes, people will say that he just jumps that way. Sorry, full back was my position. There is no way it is more comfortable/natural to jump with your front foot leading. Knees up yes...but flying kick? Watch the two angles @ 1.35 of this video. Kiwis will say it's rubbish but he meant to kick that Frenchman out of the air. He is the only player I have seen do this since Uli Schmidt almost killed Kevin Putt way back when. The only other player I have recently seen do it is guess who...Ben Smith's team mate at his club. Co-incidence? To me, that's dirty and dangerous play. The laws allow for it though. Still, most players refrain from doing it. You'll notice that he only does the flying kick when the moment is right. Which means he chooses when to jump that way and when not to. IE...it's not his natural jump. Do please explain. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yklnMa1aAgk And here in case nobody has watched this is the autopsy of Joubert amazing performance when he reffed the France AB game. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5p1YkXbWZg0

 Hey Wardad

I'm not talking about jumping with knees up. Guess you missed the bit where i said "Flying Kick". I'm talking about jumping with studs up Bruce Lee style.

Knees up is normal...but to jump with your leading leg studs up, you actually have to make an extra effort to do that as it's completely unnatural. I'm not sure you are young enough to try it, but maybe get one of your lads to do it. Chuck a ball up, let him run and jump to catch it and ask him if it feels in any way natural to jump like that. I promise you, it's not, regardless of how short or tall you are. Seriously. We'd had a few beers at a braai once and where trying to do it. Not a single guy out of the 8 of us could manage. In fact, unless you make contact with the defender you are completely off balance. The laws do allow for it, but i don't like it. The very same way i way i didn't like Bakkies Botha's headbutt in the back of your boy's head some years ago.

There are many short fullbacks in the game, but Ben Smith is the only guy i have ever seen do this. Jumping is a pretty natural action right?

Again, why if he needs to do that to get extra height does he only seem to do it when the moment calls for it? He needs extra height every time he is contesting a ball at pace  right? Not just when he is running down a sole defender who is stationary under a high ball?

Look, i'm not saying the ABs are cheats. Far from it. But i am saying that all players all over the world in all teams figure out dirty tactics and use them to their advantage. To my mind, this one of the most dangerous though. The rules around contact int the air need to change. The Boks obviously have their own dirty tactics too. So do Oz.

PS My mind is always at ease... Do you still smoke? I currently only ever smoke when i watch the first Bok international of the year, or the odd Sci-Fi, haha

Beeno isn't wrong about everything he says you know. Same as i won't agree with anyone just to be on the "right" side of an argument or person.
