Four second-half tries have propelled Wellington to a 30-15 ITM Cup win over Hawke's Bay.
The home side trailed 15-6 at half-time after a lacklustre first half but racked up 24 unanswered points in the second spell to maintain their winning start to the season.

The Lions' first-half points came from two Jason Woodward penalties but after the break Victor Vito, Dane Coles, Arden David-Perrot and Woodward all crossed the whitewash to secure the bonus point.

First-five Daniel Waenga and Hika Elliot got Hawke's Bay's five-pointers with Waenga also adding a conversion and penalty.

After weathering some early pressure from Wellington, who got on the board with a Woodward penalty, it was Hawke's Bay who took control of the first half at Westpac Stadium.

Although Waenga missed his first penalty opportunity, the Magpies began to get on top with lock Maselino Paulino prominent on both defence and attack and it wasn't long before the visitors took the lead through Elliot.

A good run from Tino Nemani got Hawke's Bay over the advantage line and from there the ball was spun wide to Zac Guildford on the left wing. He found Gillies Kaka and although the fullback was caught, the forwards were able to drive their hooker over.

A second Woodward penalty edged Wellington in front again in the 19th minute but it was their last scoring act of the half as Waenga racked up the points for the Magpies.

He kicked a penalty then finished off a sweeping move from a line-out under the posts. Good work from props Peter Borlase and Ben Tameifuna, who took some bringing down, got them to within 10 metres of the Wellington line before Elliot popped the try-scoring pass to his first-five, who then added the extras.

The Lions suffered a further blow when veteran lock Ross Filipo was forced from the field with an injury in the 33rd minute and replaced by Mark Reddish.

But they avoided further punishment in the first half when Andrew Horrell saw a long distance penalty go just wide of the uprights and Hawke's Bay led 15-6 at the break.

Lions coach Chris Boyd must have voiced his displeasure at Wellington's lacklustre opening 40 minutes because the home side came out with far greater intensity in the second spell.

They were more physical in the contact and seemed to have more urgency on attack as they started to open up the Magpies defence. The scrum also started to get the ascendancy as Wellington camped in Hawke's Bay's 22.

The Lions pack were eventually rewarded when All Black Vito scored a pushover try after they buckled and twisted the Magpies scrum. Woodward's conversion cut the deficit to two points.

The fullback, who counter-attacked strongly all match, then created Wellington's second try with a sharp break before slotting the conversion. Tim Bateman's floated pass found Coles and the hooker stepped two Hawke's Bay defenders to score.

The Wellington forwards continued to dominate the try-scoring with prop David-Perrot the next to cross the whitewash and with six minutes left Woodward rounded off a solid performance with the bonus-point try.

Wellington 30 (V.Vito, D.Coles, J.Woodward, A.David-Perrot tries; Woodward 2 cons, 2 pens) Hawke's Bay 15 (H.Elliot, D.Waenga tries; Waenga con, pen) HT: 6-15

good sign for the lions forward pack who won the battle upfront against the magpies, i really didnt expect that to happen.

bateman who was the hurricanes No12 was very good at 10, am surprised that his tactical kicking game was sound, i didnt expect that cos he rarely uses it for the hurricanes.
