Schalk won’t face the Lionsby Gavin Rich 16 April 2014, 07:47

The DHL Stormers look set to be without Schalk Burger when they tackle the Lions in a Vodacom Super Rugby match at Newlands on Saturday.

It is understood that Burger, along with wing Cheslin Kolbe, failed to convince coach Allister Coetzee that they were ready to return from injury following a training session at the High Performance Centre in Bellville on Tuesday. Coetzee had given Burger a 50/50 chance of playing but was hopeful he might get through Tuesday after running at 70% on Monday.

Kolbe looked good in training on Monday but it is understood that he felt the effects of his effort on Tuesday and the Stormers management will take the wise course of action by delaying his return to the team for at least another week. The media were barred from training on Tuesday, but sources close to the camp have leaked out the team, with The Cape Times reporting on Wednesday that Peter Grant will be named at fullback when the side is announced later in the day.

Grant has not impressed at flyhalf since returning to the Stormers team from Japan, while Jaco Taute has been a pale reflection since his return from a long injury lay-off of the man who was so impressive at fullback when he played for the Lions that he earned Springbok selection.

Nonetheless Grant moving to fullback, if that happens, would be a major surprise as he has not played there for the Stormers.

Demetri Catrakilis has better goalkicking form than Grant, which might explain the selection, but the former UCT Tigers and Southern Kings flyhalf wasn’t great in general play before being dropped. The team is to be announced at lunch time on Wednesday.

With Burger ruled out, the same loose trio that played together against the Waratahs last time out should be retained, with Duane Vermeulen playing off the back of the scrum and Nizaam Carr and Siya Kolisi on the flanks. Damian de Allende will shift to the right wing in place of the injured Kobus van Wyk so that regular captain Jean de Villiers can return at inside centre.

In the continued absence of Tiaan Liebenberg and Scarra Ntubeni, Deon Fourie will continue as the hooker after playing most of the early season games on the openside flank.

If this report is true, then Peter Grant is being shifted fullback. Grant can only kick the ball about 20 metres, so it is certainly not for his touch kicking ability.
The Stormers seem to be constantly moving players around into different posi tions, not just because of injuries either. Instead of just moving one player, they reshuffle the whole team.

Something serious went wrong with this guy - he was a very good full back when playing for the Lions.  I think the problem relates to him becoming muscle bound - losing s lot of speed in the process.
When that is the case  the players think they can run over opponents and crashballing is the inevitable result.
I gained the impression that he is not really interested anymore - he appears not to try and produce the goods.   A pity -  but I think unless there is a miracle revival - his rugby playing career is on the way to the bustbin.

Jaco Taute has been average since his return, looks rusty and indecisive. Should have been eased back into rugby

He was overrated from the start. Just blundered forward enthusiastically ....no pace, no guile, no step. And then he missed Dagg to lo se a test match. Another never has been.

Oh what utter rubbish. Taute was fantastic for 2 years as a Baby Bok, had a fantastic S15 with the Lions which saw him elevated straight into the Bok starting side, where in that year he was by far the best Bok 13, certainly better than de Jongh and Jean that year.

He was seriously injured last year and has come back hesitant.

A player with no pace, no guile or step does not get selected to start at 13 for the Boks.......what nonsense

Just another player that consumed too much creatine.
Once upon a time he may have had an average step, now he is just another mindless creatine crashball, of which we have an unlimited supply.
The way he butchered that try recently against the Crusaders, pretty much sums up cart horse Taute. All he had to do was run straight which he did, and then just before the last defender tackled him, pass to his winger who had an open run to the line.
Alas, but not crash ball Taute. He would rather try and crash his way through Israel Dagg and butcher a certain try. Primary school stuff.
Jannie Duplessis could have made that pass.

Um Moz who am I blaming here and how on earth can you conclude he has not made it, given his great start and now struggling with his return after a long lay off.

Let me guess, he should have come back and made an impression straight away?

I was useless after my shoulder injury......its a reality.

Taute has not failed, not even close. The lad is a class act

You are wrong here.   One of the best tries I have ever seen scored by a Full back was when Taute played for the Lions - starting a run from his own 22.  He had speed and he was very strong in running.    It all vanished and I share Sharkbok's view - he is muscle bound and slow.
He lost his speed and is nowadays like Steyn - slow and only a crashballer with no ability to break lines and to avoid tackles and with poor ball handling to boot.  Backline players - inclusive of full backs - need sped as well and slow backline players is an abomination.

So the mediocrity continues at the Stormers. They have literately put the Stormers cart before the horse. The cart being the stormers backline and the horse being peter grant.
Cart being rigid and out of date and the horse being a cart horse with no pace or flair.
Then we have midget Kolby that has no BMT waiting in the wings.
To think that they new "Director of Rugby" conceded 75 points at the hands of the bulls the last time he actually coached a team.
They should have brought Mallet back with Brendan Venter as the coach.

Corn I don't think Venter needs Mallett to hold his hand...but that would be a good choice.

That would be great coaching duo. However Smal is competent and a step foward. Trouble is have the clowns who love to interfere learnt anything. If Smal walks out who will then accept a coaching job at WP. They had better get the message and zip it.

Moz, I am not short sighted enough to write off a talented young player after an average few comeback games.

I have seen more than enough of Taute to conclude that he is a class act and still has plenty to offer. Having seen him employ the same kind of ability in beating defenders as the likes of JJ, Serfontein etc have done, I am not as stupid as that idiot Sharkbok who's only observation is that Taute is only about the crash ball......that is the biggest load of shit I have read in years.

Taute is one of the best young talents in SA, the very reason he received such early recognition at the highest level. Sadly injury has played its part and the lad is low of form and confidence......with time, he will rediscover both......for that is what class acts do.

After seeing him in action at 15, I am inclined to stick to my original assertion that his best position is probably 13, but given his form I doubt 13 would have made any difference. He does not strike me as a fullback, much like JP, Mvovo, Ndungane, Jacque Fourie etc never did......these guys dont have the boot to play 15.

I also have to say that playing Grant at 15 is a joke, he has been in worse form than Taute since his return and does not have the pace for a 15......another pathetic call by Coetzee

You were useless before, during and after your shoulder injury.
Don't make your shoulder the scapegoat for your lack of rugby knowledge.

Ruptured ACL is no joke and some surgeries just don't take as well as others. I think his current lack of speed and explosiveness has more to do with that than anything else.
But even before his injury, in the few games he did play for the Stormers, his style was much different from his time with the Lions and I think the crash-balling moniker was quite appropriate. Either a result of the Stormers coaching style or as some have suggested too much weight and muscle.
Hopefully he is able to recover to a point where he is able to beat defenders better than JJ or Serfontein because the only thing JJ has to beat a defender is pace so maybe he can beat a defender in a foot race with a head start and Serfontein is himself a crash-baller with the occasional inside step or spin and the rare outside break (approx once every 9 games or so - there was one in the first game of the Super 15 last year and one in a game this year in case you missed it

Just having a go Saff

Fleck and Coetzee are the worst coaches on the planet. The Lions imports might have been flops but it is no thanks to the current WP coaches.
I was hoping that Jantjies would do better at the stormers with better players around him but Coetzee brain implode was so eager to get him started that he hever gave the kid a chance to get use to the new system and after his dads death.
But worst of all is the game plan, absolutely no options or structure have been coached. All WP crash ball.
The cheetahs last year showed that you don't need a pivot to get your game going, it is more about the coaching and you want your players to approach the game.
The Stormers can have Le Roux, Cruden, Smith etc and they will still be rubbish

Yep Coetzee is shockingly poor......sadly the Stormers do not have the balls to sack him.

They bring in Smal and retain Coetzee - how stupid are they?

Is this guy still playing rugby? He no longer has the pace to play at fullback, and his only option it at centre- albeit the disaster he was at outside centre for the Boks.

You can see, I can see it, I've said it many times......backline play is not solely dependent on a flyhalf.
