Fourie targets 2015 World Cup 2012-10-16 18:43             Jaque Fourie (AFP) Related Links Cape Town - Springbok centre Jaque Fourie is targeting a return to South Africa in 2015 to compete for a place in the World Cup squad.

Fourie, 29, last played for the Springboks at last year’s World Cup in New Zealand before heading off to Japan where he had a short stint with the Wild Knights, before signing for the Steelers for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

In April this year he announced that while he plays his rugby in Japan he won’t be available for the Springboks.

On Tuesday he told the Keo.co.za website that he wants to be based in Japan for another three years before returning to South Africa.

"Everyone goes to Europe. I wanted to do something different... something that didn’t revolve around rugby alone," he said.

"But I plan on coming back to South Africa for the 2015 season to contend for a place in the Springbok team for the next World Cup.

"I haven’t made myself available for the Boks during the two seasons I’ll spend at the Steelers because I want to give my full commitment to the club."

Fourie has represented South Africa in 69-Tests, scoring 32 tries.

meyer has expressed great intrest in fourie, so seeing him return
to the Boks is not out of the equation, but IMO by 2015 the Boks centers
will be well and truly locked down and jp pieterson will be the
incumbent 13 and sasuke will be saying u see guys, what have i been
telling u all this time??? lol

ol mikey might ot be too happy with this news though, cos in the rugby
world, he is an ageist, LMAO, :oP

Ag no, by 2015 Fourie will be long past it. I would certainly not bother with him. We have far too many great young centres coming through

He saw us out of the last RWC passing behind Habana with a try on and never backing up one of Jean's three splendid breaks. Before that he nearly lost the Welsh pool game by missing Toby Faletau, one on one, 5 metres from our line, for a try.

Does he want to come back just to make sure we fail again?

He will be a hasbeen by the time he returns. It actually annoys me somewhat when a players plies his trade in another country to make more money and then shows up in World Cup year to make the team. It happened with that ex- Luke Mcalister- he was hoaring his services all over the show to the highest bidder. Then in Worldcup year he went back to NewZealand in 2011. However he had been playing a lower level of rugby than the Superxv and he was not even selected for the All Blacks squad. He then had a tantrum, and went awol on his regional contract to go to France. It seems that justice was best served

Wr definitely don't want to turn the Sprinbok team into a retirement village for the rugby senile.   Fourie has played in Japan - does anyone know whether he performed well?   The answer is no.   The last effort from Japan that was selected for the Sptinhbok team was a serious flop

The selection of old players has never worked since the inception of the WC - every team tries to keep the aging players in the squad for the next WC and there never was a repeat winner.

It is the turn of the All Blacks now - leave them to fo it - they are well on their wat with a team where the average age if the forwards are already 32 - they will be 35 by the next WC and their changes of winning will be zero.

I thought that people should learn from history - but they never do.

ActUally Mike, if you read my posting again, you will see I am dead against Fury returning. Do you need stronger specs?

And  in terms of not learning from history, I would say Jake succeeded very well bringing back Monty and Os. What never works is dumping a bunch of young guys in the Bok team, without proper preparation.

I believe Montgomery was 26 years old when White brought him back into the team.in 2004.   Os was much older - but he was a forward - where exceptional older plaers can still perform.  However, exceptions are not the rule - to my mind players over 30 at this stage are not suitable to ggo to the next WC.

I am strongly opposed to bringing in players purely they are young and they are physically strong.   You saw what I wrote elsewhere about Saffex's  list of useless youngsters.   Yes me must select younger players - but then they must be worth it.    In essence I have no problem with players like Goosen, Jordaan, Etzebeth and Coetzee - but I have serious problems when young players who failed on lower level is brought in without regard to performance.   Inevitably in such an enviroment there will be both successes and failures - some will fail initially, but succeed later on - that is why I think Taute may develop further with more experience and better coaching.

However, there is a cricket issue I want to mention and that is that youth is not really a negative insofar as some players are concerned.  The example is Quinton De Kick - he really is exceptionally good at this stage and will in all likelihood be one of the best players that will ever represent SA in cricket. - real star that one.   The sooner he is brought into the National Squad the better it would be for our cricket..

Copy and paste if you want, Jacque Fourie is certainly playing well at Japan rugby top league if you have'nt been aware. People tend to look down on players who don't fit the description because of age or previous performances at world cup, Yet Jacque is better than every centre that we currently have now in SA. I would have no problem at all if Jacque returns 2015, we could possibly see him getting more opportunities to run into space at that time since we have flyhalfs such as Goosen and Jantjies that play a more attacking approach in the backline.

These up an coming centres are nothing compared to Jacque, a true asset to the team. Am i the only one that believes Jacque Fourie has been the most influential centre we've ever had in this decade? far superior than Jordaan, Taute ect.. I guess people have forgotten.

Lucid

Sorryy - I disagree with you here.   On the same basis of performance in the past  we should bring back most of the players who were good in 2007 - who are now playing club rugby in Europe - and continue to play them in future.   Sorry - Fourie was a player in a past era - that by 2015 will be way past his prime.

I have so often see very good players of the past trying to play the game past their sell-by date - and in the process ruining completely their erstwhile reputation as top players.   That is bound to happen to Fourie  as well.   Players themselves should know when in the interest of the country as a whole  - but sometimes think otherwise and fail to live up to expectations.
