Montpellier's South African coach Jake White said on Tuesday he is ready to retake the helm of his national side, which he led to glory at the 2007 World Cup.

Current South Africa coach Allister Coetzee oversaw a catastrophic 2016 season but last week his federation gave him a vote of confidence despite a record of eight defeats in 12 tests that year.

White is scheduled to quit Montpellier, who are third in the French top flight, at the end of the current Top 14 campaign in June.

"I would like to be involved in international rugby again," 53-year-old White told South African TV in an interview recorded before Coetzee was retained.

"Any guy who has competed at the highest level will tell you that's where you measure yourself," he said.

"I was lucky enough to have some success. And as a guy that's been involved in the Boks and more importantly measured in test rugby, it's something that I'd like to get back into."

White will be replaced by Scotland coach Vern Cotter in June, just ahead of France's summer Tour of South Africa.

Maybe the Boks will employ him as they said they were waiting to finalise one last contract- defence coach if I recall. Although I thought that was for Venter.

With his style of rugby - Jake will be doomed as much as or even worse than Coetzee - his ardent pupil.

Jake is a good coach, he has made a positive difference ein all of his coaching jobs. Jake's problem is he does not like authority, especially those who know fvchall about the game but want to instruct him on training methods.  He's the type of guy you leave the hell alone to get on with the job - like my other friend Connor O'Shea who is doing a great job as a young (46 yrs) coach.  His Italian team outsmarted the Poms for near half of the match and were not the usual walk-over.  Same type of no nonsense guy.
Jake however needs to be supported by a strong team of knowledgeable sub-coaches with strong personalities else he will railroad them.
All that helps absolutely squat!  I do not think that SARU and Jake will ever have a symbiotic relationship.  I do not think that there are many strategic coaches with excellent backline experience who'd rush to join forces with Jake.
He will not be jobless for long though - there are already rumours in the industry..just ask MO(NH)

The people on this thread are bemoaning Jake White's interest in the Bok job. Have any of you noticed who our actual coach is? Give me Jake White any day over this fucking fool we have at the moment.

This guy must be named SA coach immediately.
Not only his antiquated play style will not reverse the flow, but he has the habit of deflecting criticism by singling out his own players, regardless of their performances on the field.

In the context of SA, this will be the treat.

Enough (and that is  not much required in the present case) to understand that pointing fingers some of the  players(but not all) who authored a poor performance or even players who played better than others as a way to avoid being questioned on the used strategy is the kind of man management that will be entertaining to see in the SA team.

Quite true but we need a man that stands on his own...not for accolade or money orientated purposes or goals but loves rugby as a game to promote especially with the underdogs with showing potential...Vern Cotter is one with Scotland and Milton Haig with Georgia, imagine thick heads what they could do to SA rugby WITHOUT our political bullshit and our self destructive mindset.

We need help but are fumbling around, NZ coaches are the best in this rugby world.

...whats stopping Jake from raping South Africa of it's talent a second time...reward the blood sucking parasitic leech with the coaching job and i bet after a year he'll be leaving SA again with the next generation of talent...basic behavioural psychology - behaviour that's rewarded is repeated..

Political interference is the trademark for SA rugby.

SA can not afford to be on the level of Scotland or Georgia.

Performances of players in club mean usually little when ported to test selections. Contrary to Scotland or even Georgia, SA players are scattered all around the world, playing in different rugbys (all of them loser rugbys), playing on different schedules.
Scotland coach uses scottish history to spirit players up, the same way cant be applied in SA.

Opportunities that exist for other countries like the english make believe rugby project does not exist for SA.

Good question Brycy.
On another note, why didn't you join the Ruckers Forum league on Foxsport? I know you're in the Ruckers Forum 1 league but that's a Head-to-Head league while the Ruckers Forum league (league code SJCNUJ6A) is an open league where you are simply ranked by your total Fantasy Points. It's also sponsored so we have prizes including test match tickets. You're a Fantasy regular and you already had a team in the other league so I see no reason why you can't still join us?

Brycy, it's no extra effort at all. It's not like you're entering another team. Joining us would just mean that your current team in the Head-to-Head league would also be ranked in the Open league.
Select and copy the code, open Foxsports, click on leagues, click on join league, paste the code and you're in. Hardly a lot of time or effort.

There is a huge difference between Jake White and Vern Cotter and Milton Haig...the first is a accolade seeker, filthy lucre and tick marks...the last two are givers to the rugby world, making something out of nothing...that's what rugby needs...I'm very happy with dear ol' Scotland...hope they shunt England and in a time Georgia shunt a tier one nation.

Rugby is heart , not boring obvious statistics...go the underdogs...the real heroes of adversity and challenges.

This is purely academic as there is no political will and underachieving is now the norm in SA. However given a choice between AC and White you would really need to be Trads love child to go for AC.
I am not saying that there are not a load of better coaches out there, but.....they don't seem to be knocking on SARU's door.
At this point I would take any structure, game plan and favorite selections over the horror show that was 2016.

You admire White based on his style of rugby - which has fallen by the wayside  years ago and his so-called success rate  has gpne missing exactly because of that.
White thinks that backline players have only two functions - to kick the sh!t out of the ball whenever they get it and then have to defend when they have handed over possession to opposing teams.       Meyer tried to follow the same game plan - if one  can even call it a game plan - and Coetzee is even a greater admirer of White and follow his plan to the "T".
What problem will White solve?   Definitely not the performance one.

I have a small charactarised statue of Jimi Hendrix on my desk. It would make a better coach than Coetzee. If the Boks voted for their own team and coached themselves they be better too.

Jake introduced the rush defence to international rugby......a true innovation you can now see deployed in every international match played. He left every team he has coached ranked higher, in most cases significantly higher than when he started. He won a WC and a TN in the space of 4 years. He has nothing to prove, but many jealous, bitter types have done their best to ice him.

I am not embittered against White - but White won the WC and Tri-Nations before 2008. when the laws of rugby was substantially changed.    White then went to the Brumbies and had a strong backline coach - which partly hid the deficiencies.
During the WC he brought in Eddie Jones to assist in backline usage as he had no idea about backline coaching.    After the Brumbies contract - which he breached because he did not get the Aussie coaching job - he became the Sharks coach where he tried to use his pre-2008 coaching approach with disastrous consequences from his personal career,
He was effectively fired after less than a year in charge because, of his personal attributes and approach to the game.    Neither did he last long at Montpellier.
So what can be deduced from that - in the main rugby moved on while White failed to move with the times and the new approach to rugby that all countries bar SA has accepted as the norm.
Aside from his persistent difficulties with his employers - he has a problem in coaching which will not be successful.    But in the main we are talking and discussions on a theoretical issue -  SARU would never make a coaching job offer to White,
