Paris - South Africa's 2007 Rugby World Cup winning coach Jake White is set to be named manager of Top 14 side Montpellier according to L'Equipe on Thursday.

The 51-year-old - a two-time IRB World Coach of the Year - has signed a six month contract according to a well-informed source.

His appointment will place almost unbearable pressure on head coach Fabien Galthie as White will be the former France captain's superior.

Galthie, who has been seen as a potential successor to present France coach Philippe Saint-Andre should he step down after next year's World Cup, has seen his position at the club weakened with a seven match losing run dating back to October 11 which only ended in their game last Saturday with a narrow win over Toulouse.

They are presently in sixth place, the last position for the post-season play-offs, 11 points off leaders and defending champions Toulon.

"White is coming with a view to being in charge of the team completely," the source told L'Equipe.

"He will be above Galthie. He will have the role of manager, that is what has been negotiated."

However, a close friend claims that Galthie - who has guided the team from nowhere to becoming a regular contender for the French title taking them to the 2011 final - will feel the appointment has pushed him into a corner where he has no option but to resign.

Galthie, who also coached his first club Stade Francais to the 2005 French championship and European Cup finals, was allowed to stay on after Montpellier president Mohad Altrad held talks with the players before the Toulouse game but only if the 45-year-old could turn their fortunes around.

"Galthie has the feeling that they want to make him so disgusted that he leaves and therefore is less costly to them in terms of a pay out," the friend told L'Equipe.

Since leaving the Springboks post in 2007 White has held coaching posts with Australia side Brumbies and then as director of rugby with South African outfit The Sharks but resigned in September this year and has been acting as a technical advisor to the Tongan national team.

Montpellier's next game is an away trip to bottom side Castres on Sunday.


Dont be foolish like the Guppies Montpellier. Appreciate what you have got in White.

Honesty has never been a strength of Jake's......one has to wonder what the real reason is behind him leaving the Sharks

My understanding is that there was friction between the coaching staff and the players who had objections to the style of play he tried to implement.

It is a short 6 month contract, should be great for White. 
He will play all of the French test level players into the ground instead of rotating the squad. By the time the international season has started they will be totally burnt out. 
This Gathie character may as well resign. Being in a conflict with Jake White is not worth it. It is the Jake Way, or no way.

 Fabian Galthie resigned a few weeks ago but was forced to take the position back when the players had a rebellion and said they wanted him back....or else. The Backs Coach also tendered his resignation, but that was declined.
How this will suit a team in disarray,  but who are rather loyal to their Coach, is anyone's guess.

Sharkbok, you ended up with burnt out players because your team has zero depth and in too many positions relied on overrated players. When Jake was uveiled as Sharks coach, I warned you all that you will not have the same success of the Brumbies; partly because he had more talent to unearth or use, and because Australians are, more intelligent and willing to learn. That said he took your team to it's best season since 2007. Who knows, were it not for Lambie at 10 your team might have actually played it's way into the final. Too bad that Frans was your teams best 10, 12, 13 and 15.

 I am sure Jake would have loved to be at home but the guppies messed up big time and the weak leadership never backed Jake - of course Jake needs to work. The Sharks had a lot of injuries during the season which was widely noted. Was another reason why some players were over played.
Good luck with Montpellier Jake - will more egg be landing on the anti Jake brigade? How often hasnt that happened?

 Firstly Draad, Jake is no snake. Montpellier clearly knows this.I fear though that this might be a poison chalice for Jake.

 Becs, it's a simple capitalism. Supply and demand. Nothing as sinister as the inflated property bubble in the US. Clubs that can afford it, pays and the one's that can't don't. At the end of the day the books must balance,  if not the salaries will dry up. Caps won't kurb the flow. Keeping the shitty clubs in the game artificially will harm the game even more. Rugby should embrace true global professionalism before it can be taken seriously as a pro sport...and to be fair, it was doing a lousy job as amateur sport ages before going pro in the mid 90's

 No Draad, it is wrecking the game.The gulf in French Rugby Club finances is vast, Toulon and a couple of other teams are buying mercenaries from all over the world and paying them a fortune to bench sit for most of the Season ( if a player loves Rugby, they would not join a French side like Toulon )It cannot be allowed to continue.
As I said before, we have thousands of Clubs here. When the game went Pro, many ancient Clubs ceased to be and more will fall by the wayside if this ridiculous state of affairs continues. It can't be allowed to happen. Rugby fans do not want to see a bunch of over paid, over hyped mercenaries in their Squads, thanks. We would rather see home grown players that benefit our national side. 
I couldn't give a damn about seeing some of these players. I have had enough of this nonsense.

 If you want to pay peanuts,  youl get monkeys. Capitalism is all but a perfect system,  but it works better than any other, too much interference would do more damage than good. There are always trade offs. I also yearn back to the amature era, but let's face it, we do get way more  and higher quality rugby now than back in the day. And I know many would disagree, but there is no denying the facts. It comes at a price though, but everything does. I sense a bit of RTC in you Becs.

I guess Jake just wanted to move closer to his family  
Personally I don't like his style of rugby but he does get results . On his hopping, he has to earn a crust like all of us do any job is a good job. However, fa have to ask why so many job changes?
