MARK KEOHANE writes Jaco Taute wants to specialise as a fullback and Elton Jantjies must be the Stormers first-choice flyhalf.

If Taute doesn’t start at 15 and Jantjies is not given the responsibility at 10, then what was the point of luring them to the Cape for this season’s Super Rugby challenge?

Taute is still contracted to the Lions but because the Lions are not playing in the 2013 Super Rugby competition he is among 14 of last year’s Lions playing for another South African franchise this year.

Taute made his Springbok debut at outside centre, but it is fullback that is his best position and what motivated him accepting the offer from the Stormers was to play at fullback in a back three of Gio Aplon and Bryan Habana.

Taute and Lions and Bok team-mate Elton Jantjies are expected to add a dimension to the Stormers attacking game, which has been constantly condemned in the past three seasons as being too one-dimensional. The Stormers won 82% of their matches in last season’s league stages but lost at home in the semi-final for the second successive season. In 2011 the Crusaders were comfortable winners against a Stormers team that had also dropped few games and boasted the best defensive record in the competition’s history.

Defence has taken the Stormers close in the last two seasons but the lack of an attacking game has meant that close is as good as nothing. (Injuries were also a significant  factor)

Western Province, in the Currie Cup, employed a far more attacking game and Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has said that elements of the Province style would be incorporated into the Stormers’ play this season.

Coetzee remains a realist and is practical that the primary focus remains winning the game and getting four league points. He however acknowledges the impact players like Taute and Jantjies will have on the squad.

Taute’s versatility, in that he can play wing, midfield and even at flyhalf, helps any squad but Coetzee also sees his greatest value at fullback.

Jantjies must start at flyhalf for the Stormers with the more seasoned Peter Grant his back-up. (Mike please tak ea deep breath!)

Jantjies has been stuffed around at international level  (Should he hav ebeen there before lambie? - doubt it) but his form in Super Rugby last season was very good and he needs game time at the Stormers. He is a greater long-term investment than Grant, who plays in Japan during the Currie Cup season.

Grant will be a perfect foil for Jantjies but it is Jantjies who has to get the preferential treatment this season and playing in the more competitive and successful colours of the Stormers will also improve his national aspirations.

The only thing that is certain barring injury is that Jantjes will get his chance. Its up to him to grab it as Grant is a pretty useful flyhalf an dwill be snapping at his heels. We shall see how he goes.  I am open on the subject. Give the boy a shot. If he fouls up revert to Grant - he is away to begin with in any event.

Nothing new in this report.   Taute to play at full back and Jantjies at 10.   Taute was a star full back for the Lions and I think he would do very well for the Stormers.   Jantjies may or my not make a success at `10 - I would say there is a 40% chance that he could perform on an acceptable level - but do not have too much hope of that.  We will have to see what he does.

Peter Grant is surely the incumbent at 10- but when does he get back from Japan?- as he typically misses the start of the season.

If Jantjies can make the backline attack better thn eplay, let him take the number 10 position.

-

Peter Grant is a better pole kicker, stronger on defence and also a stronger carrier for crash ball tban wee Jantjies.

However Peter Grants passing game has really fallen apart.

It was pathetic in the semi against the Sharks last year wilth the ball rolling over the floor, and the one pass behind JDV must have ranked as hospital pass of the year.

--

Taute was poor for the Springboks other than one dimensional crash ball, and a few decent tackles.  Ran like a donkey pulling a cart on the field.

Taute is a full back that was forced into playing at center - I rate him extremely highly as a full-back, but he is not an acceptable center at all.

Saffex watched the Wallaby test and raved about Taute.   I looked at the game again since Saffex asked me what Taute could have done differently in respect of the balls he got.   I answered that question under another thread - but can only state that in two of the cases Taute lacked insight and option taking - he did not consider potential alternatives - he just passed to the next player who  was covered by defenders and did not have space to operate.

You will see a different player in Taute at full back.

Taute will find himself back at 13 sooner or later - watch this space

My guess is Taute is vastly overrated at fullback or centre. So is Jantjies. Aplon will find himself back at fullback and Grant will be playing 10 before long....watch this space.

Taute is an excellent full back and he proved it over and over again playing for the Lions over a two year period.   I do not rate players for one match achievement - but over a sustained period and he was excellent for that period.

I always liked Aplon - but his game started to deteriorate in 2012 and he is getting very near to retirement from top rugby - so I think he will be closing out on Super level this year and won't be back - will only play from the bench this year.

Saffex

Forget about Taute as a center - he will not make it in that position and all I can add is "watch this space"

What about Joe Pieterson?- He was the incumbent fullback last year, not Aplon who played mostly on the wing.

Joe Pieterson had a good season and is probably a better or at least equal Pole kicker to Jantjies, not that it wil mattter much if Peter Grant the best kicker in last years SuperXV is back at 10.

- Pieterson did make the fatal mistake of missing the highball by not jumping in the semi, and this was a match losing act. Cant really blame his height if he never jumped.

-

If Sweil can get up to 85kg, I expect he will take the starting space on the bench for flyhalf or even fullback.

-Jantjies and Taute to be shipped back to the Lions at the end of the season- watch this space.

You are grossly unfair to Taute in this case.  He will stay on and play for the Stormers for many years as a full back.   If they use him as a center - he would not last this Super Series season.

However, I personally cannot see how Jantjies can last through the Super 15 series as the Stormers flyhalf.   I think they would release him from his contract by not later than the end of April.

Watch this space.

You will find that Moffie has a soft spot for the washed up hasbeens - he has an affinity to them given his advanced age - Aplon and Grant what a laugh - good call Moffie
