Jantjies is special - Coetzee 28 November 2012, 16:58

The Stormers are savouring the prospect of new signing Elton Jantjies to play for the coastal outfit in next year's Super Rugby campaign, head coach Allister Coetzee said on Wednesday.

Coetzee said the 22-year-old Jantjies was a special player, and he believed the youngster would add a new dimension to the team's attack.

"I know what Elton offers and it's our job to make sure that he fits into the rugby scene here in Cape Town," Coetzee said.

"We have to make sure he settles down as soon as possible.

"Elton will start the conditioning programme in mid-December and then he'll get acquainted with our playing systems. He's an exciting prospect in terms of how we want to play next season."

Coetzee said there was no need for drastic personnel changes, since this year's table-topping and South African Conference-winning side had shown there was no need to tinker with their playing style.

"We won't change the way we played because we've won the SA Conference for a second time," Coetzee said.

"We've obviously done things correctly, but we'll change the way we think if we need to. We've tried a few things in the Currie Cup and some of those things we'll take with us into the Super Rugby season.

"The coaching staff will have discussions with the senior players as well, before we finally decide on how we want to play. The senior players' input is vital because we want their buy-in."

Coetzee confirmed that the issue of captaincy would be decided just before the start of the new season, with either Schalk Burger or Jean de Villiers the front-runners.

"It's not important to make a decision at this stage, but we'll make a call next year," he said.

"The fact that De Villiers will continue as Bok captain will not have a bearing on our appointment. I'm happy for Jean because he's done a wonderful job captaining the Boks.

"Also, the absence of Schalk at the start of the season won't influence our thinking. We'll make a choice based on what's best for the team.

"Schalk has been part of our pre-season planning because he's part of the leadership team and will always be there."

Burger, who suffered a long-term knee injury in February, would start full training in mid-January and might be ready for the start of the season.

"He'll be running with a physiotherapist and once he's ready, he'll join the team," said Coetzee.

The coach said the season would get off to a tricky start, with derbies against the Bulls and the Sharks to kick off the season.

"It will be a tough start for us with the Bulls and Sharks first up," said Coetzee.

"But I suppose its tough for all the teams. We'll have the consolation of playing at home for four weeks after that."

personally I have not seen that much of Jantjies as he played for the Lions who I rarely watched.

Shall see next year, will be more of potential than the current product. Needs to improve, but we shall see.

Talk is that Peter Grant may alternative with inside center and Jean could alternate with outside center

So they decided to talk him up, having bought him.....is anybody surprised. Watch for Peter Grant around Super 6, riding a white horse.

Coetzee is spot on, Jantjies is a special talent and will thrive in the Stormers side. With him at 10, he will ignite the Stormers backs, more so if we see Coetzee discard Jean and de Jongh as his centres. What he needs to do is invest in th classy youngsters like Taute, Pat Howard, JP du Plessis and de Allende at centre.

Jantjies is over-hyped and is now in a psoition to see whether he can live up to the hype.   He will have to deal with his defensive deficiencies or he will find that he would be discarded    He will also have to play nearer to the gain line insofar as attacking and ball-handling is concerned - if he continues like he did recently, he is not going to succeed in that department as well.  We will soon enough see whether he will survive the Super Series next year or drop out of contention before the end of the season.

earl jantjies will be tested and i do not think the way the stormers played last year will help his own game to be fair. the lack of attack in the stormers will not suite him. his ablity to blow hot and cold almost on a weekly basis will not stand him in good stead. i really do hope for his sake he can find some level of performance per week but from what i have seen so fat he needs a lot of work. one can be assured of one the the AC coetzee/ robbie fleck school of robotics will at least indoctrinate him into not thinking at all.

Mike dont speak crap, Jantjies used to have an issue defensively, he has long cut that out.

Carpet, I agree, the Stormers style might hamper his creativity. He would have been better off playing for the Cheetahs or Sharks

Thank goodness Plumtree can see a failure a mile off.   As a Shark supporter I really am grateful he is not coming here.

By the way - all the tackling failures happened this year - when did Silky Hands Jantjies got over his defence problems?

By the way -- warch Silky Hands next time and figure out who stands deeper in the pocket - Silky Hands or Morne?

Jantjies has missed fewer tackles than most this year, his defence has been great

Earl should have gone to the Queens.
