The following from News24:-
"The 20-year-old Schickerling made a stunning comeback to the game in October last year after suffering a broken neck in a Provincial Under-21 clash against the Bulls in 2014.

He is now part of the Stormers' Super Rugby squad and his continuing on his path to fulfil his dream of becoming a Springbok one day.

"That injury was not easy for him, but his work ethic has brought him back and if he continues working hard I think he will make a huge impact in South African rugby," said Winter.

"Nothing has been easy for him. To come back from an injury like that would have been tough for a lot of players, including myself. He is a proper tough kid."

Winter says Schickerling has all the right attributes to become a world-class lock.

"He's got great line-out ability and he is an intelligent kid. I could not compliment him enough - he is still young and he still got a lot to learn.

"He is blessed with this amazing talent for rugby and I really think he is going to do well. He just going to grow from strength to strength," said Winter.

While Schickerling, who was also one of the stars of the SA Under-20 side that finished as runners-up to England at the 2014 Junior World Championship, can play in both lock positions, Winter feels that the youngster is more at home in the No.5 jersey.

"I think he is good No.5 lock. I think he can play both, but I think he is a good No.5.

"His got great line-out skills and he can call the line-out. He has got a natural feel for the game.

"Although he can match it up in the physical stakes, he runs great lines with the ball. He has a good pass and he thinks on his feet.

"He is just a natural ball player. I think he will develop into a good No.5," Winter added."

I was really upset when this youngster broke his neck in a game in 2014 since I thought that he was going to be one of the star locks of the future.   He has all the potential and he definitely is going to be a far better lock than  we had as a 5 at the time (2014) in the Springbok team.

I an delighted that he is back and already in the Stormers Super 18 squad.  We will see a lot of this youngster this year and I am really looking forward to that.

Great talent was awesome for the Baby Boks...hopefully he had filled out for the big league. Was about 110kg as a 19 year old.

I changed my avatar temporarily - so have a look at the guy and tell me whether you think he is still 110 kgs.  I do not think so.

I doubt he is 110kg still but no doubts the various sites will be as out of date as ever. Hell the stupid Stormers site still has Etzebeth at 117kg...his weight when he was a Baby Bok

This is exactly to a word the comment I expected from Mozart.   In return - let me explain something.  If he was fit last year -  I would have replaced that useless Kiewiet Matfield with him in the Springbok squad - at least he has leg muscles something Marfield never had.   .

I mean seriously Mike, Stephanie was hopeless at the RWC. I actually was a great admirer of Piet Spiere du Toit, we all were back then. But this kid has been hopelessly hyped and the injuries certainly haven't helped...nor I suppose did the attempt to convert him to a loose forward for the WC. Still there have to be serious doubts about his place in the scheme of things. From the Stormers perspective I hope he succeeds, but I'm not very hopeful.

Seriously I think that the most over-hyped player in the WC squad was Matfield.  He was very poor in the round robin series - when he did play and was replaced constantly by De Jager.  He has since the WC been very poor for Northampton and only get playing time because of the absence of Saints players on national duty.
To be quite frank with the lack of playing time before the WC like some of the other players selected by Meyer - I would not have taken Du Toit to the WC.   Alberts had one game against Argentina and was so poor that Du Toit looked like a star when he replaced him in that test,   Be it as it may neither had enough game time to wa rrant selection.  Meyer should have selected Kriel as a loosie and selected performing players and not Alberts and Du Toit for the WC squad.
I do not think that Du Toit got much playing time and when he did against Japan he had to be both a lock and loosie - because Matfield was moonlighting in the backline whenever he could and did not produce anything up front ever.   Aside from that Du Toit got only about 10 minutes playing time.   Hardly enough to justify a negative comment on his performance.
I think he will do as well for the Stormers as he did last year for the Sharks before he was injured.

Either way ... we need to see new talent coming through.
I rate PSDT. He's a talented youngster that could go far ... IF ... he's able to stay fit and healthy. Rather injury prone don't you think?
Besides, we're in need of natural 5 lock. Playing 4 locks out of position isn't working. Look at Lomp!!
Holding thumbs for the youngster.
Just a pity he's a friggin Stormer.

The players are there - but they do not get selected because of the role the politicos play in Stormers and WP Rugby.   Bad news that lot.

They have all been identified some time ago by various posters on here, as future game breakers, greats, brilliant, Bok stalwarts for years to come, etc, etc, etc. None of  them  turned to be anything special and some of them have just faded away while some remained just average players.

I did not go bananas, p@epol. You did. I merely made a suggestion and listed a few names and then you burst a vein.
The point is that there are always premature cries of so-called stars if the future who mostly just become no more than average players. Thing is that many of those players could have been special had it not been for the media hype and them being pushed onto "the big scene" prematurely. Do you want examples?

AB supporters are slow to anoint a youngster, they want proof. But once a player has contributed to the team, showed himself worthy at international level.....the AB fan is loyal. A guy like Conrad Smith would have been hounded out of the Bok team years ago.

Bok supporters are the polar opposite. They anoint any half talented young player. Overlook their deficiencies at test level and wage campaigns for their inclusion. But as they reach their late twenties, they are abandoned for the latest flavour of the day. And if they linger, they are attacked with vitriol.

But as we saw again with the ABs, WCs are won by players in their late twenties or older. Clearly the NZ fan is a lot more astute than the Bok fan.

There is a similarity between NZ fans and SA fans.  The similarity is that both fan basis in both case considered the PERFORMANCE of players - without regard to age.  No NZ player would last without regard to performance.
In SA there is a tendency to install players in teams and keep them without any regard to performance.   That is what ultimately cost Meyer his job.  Performance was not an issue with him - only reputation was and he said so repeatedly.
In SA there was no renewal programme in place because too many players just rested on their laurels/reputation and replacement was minimal.  Some recent replacement took place because the reputation players just became too poor to continue with and that res ulted in youngsters not getting the necessary experience.
However, I cannot say that there is anything wrong with coaches identifying potential top players and making comments on that.  Some of the players so identified will progress through to higher levels - others won't.  It depends on themselves and their dedication and hard work coupled to ability.  However, it also depend on them getting opportunity to develop their talents - and that is not always forthcoming because of coach deficiency.

But, but, but,........................ the argument is about the supporters. Not what the coaches do, or don't do, for that matter. In fact the coaches are often rubbished when they do not select the blue-eyed boys.

Coaches are rubbished when they used to Meyer and Ludeke method - select their own blue-eyed boys with total disregard of performance.
But lets get back to supporters - there were serious question marks of players included in the WC squad where performance was ignored and selection based on reputation.  No real fan would criticize an SA team select on the basis of performance - but when that very real requirement is ignored they will speak their mind.  Why should knowledgeable fans stay silent, especially since the chosen favourites of the coach lose against a team like Japan - when the team was recorded as the most experienced team ever fielded by SA.   Way too many reputation players with serious performance deficiencies.
But lets accept that the reason for Meyer falling on his own sword was his total inability to ensure that reputation/experience together with performance is the criterium for selection.   The moment the performance requirement went out of the window - the criticism commenced and the result proved that the criticism was fully justified.

Now that would have  been a  valid argument, had it been a proven fact.
In addition to that, you keep on getting the tail end of the debate. Once again. My argument had nothing to do with any coach. Note that there are quite a few names in my list who were not even chosen for the RWC.

I counted carefully and the end result is that Meyer had at least a third of his selections based on reputation without performance.  For the rest he picked players and discard them after one or two matches - a string of them.  In 2012 he picked 14 players from the Bulls to be in the starting line-up or on the bench.  He discarded them and started running after the so-called reputation players and when players like Botha, Jacque Fourie and Steenkamp ultimately deserted him he was forced to bring in inexperienced youngsters into the team.
He would never look at performance as a requirement iro his favourites.  I think the bells rang loud and clear when "the most experienced team ever in the history of Springbok rugby" was beaten by the Japanese.
He fell on his own sword when he had to - otherwise he would have been fired because of his sick approach to team selection and the game plan he used because his favourites could not adjust their game and became an absolute negative for the Springboks.

MY POST AND SUBSEQUENT REMARKS HAS  F@KOL TO DO WITH THE ANY COACH. I SHOULD KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT BECAUSE I POSTED IT AFTER ALL. IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SUPPORTERS' PERCEPTIONS.

You still missed the point completely.  Your misfit post dealt with players who according to you did not perform up to standard when people say they have a future.  It was a sideswipe at critics of Meyer - he was the coach after all - and ignore the essence of what was in the article.
Supporter perspective entail criticism of players who do not perform and is then thrust into selection by a coach whom himself said outright he select players on reputation.  It is the reputation players that got criticized and in essence the coach who keep them in the team.
Where your brain stops fu nctioning completely is that not all players showing early promise make it through to the higher echelons of rugby - so your approach is the same as under this thread - condemn them before they become a danger to your favourite geriatric players.   Just look at the flop players like Matfield, Alberts and Morne Steyn are in the clubs they play for barely 4 months after the WC.  They are serious flops - yet you support their selection to the Springbok squad.  A mountain of egg is covering you and that is a fact.
