The Sharks have received a boost with the news that bruising flanker Jean Deysel has returned from Japan and he's already been fast-tracked into the Sharks S15 squad.

The Sharks have also signed scrumhalf Michael Claasen who is currently playing for Toulon but he will only be available once he has fulfilled his commitments in France.

So  "Dumb Muscle" Deysel is back at 7 for the Sharks - he is in serious competition with Willem Alberts for that designation.
Am not overly impressed with the signing of Michael Claasen as well.   He is already 32 years of age and the fact that his club is not renewing his contract is telling us he is not up to standard anymore.
To my mind the Sharks are signing up too many rejects from NH Clubs - whose club contracts have come to an and and would not be renewed - Stevens, Botha and now Claassens.

Another washed up hasbeen signed onto the Sharks Books? Classen to mentor the young players.... Why is his contract not being renewed? Is this decision or the Clubs?

Michael Claassens is not quite a "washed-up hasbeen" and is currently Toulon's first choice scrum-half. The problem is that he is not a JIFF player, i.e. a player who either (before turning 21) spent at least three seasons at a youth academy of a French club or is has been licensed for five seasons to play in France. They are therefore not allowed to offer him another extension on his contract, according to the new rules that are in place from the 2014/15 season. Claassens only arrived at the club in 2013 and his intention was probably to retire after his Toulon stint.

Well Claasens will undoubtedly be the best Sharks scrum half, although it may take 10 or so games for the penny to drop.

Nope Reinach is one of the best 9's in the game and will walk the Sharks starting 15 week after week with ease.

The current Bok incumbent has nothing to worry about in has been Claasens

Wow so you are passing judgement on a player you have never seen......special talent that.

Actually if good old Coetzee had, had any ability as a coach, he would not have selected the ridiculously average de Kock Steenkamp ahead of Roux a year or two ago and we would then not be having this debate.

Do yourself a favour and watch the Youtube clip of this lad and come tell me how average he is.

Ignorant to not care that we have lost this guy. The same guy who was regarded as being better than Etzebeth early on in their careers.

Sharks will be strengthened by having these two very able guys in the squad. No question about it.
As for Quinn h3 had Bok written all over him before leaving. The trend oaks is this. NH buy our top young talent and we get them back at the end of their careers. Enjoy. The IRB needs to set new rules whereby SH countries are not looted by parasitic NH countries and Japan. Our currency is by far the weakest and our players undoubtedly the best and hence our problem by far the biggest.

"The IRB needs to set new rules whereby SH countries are not looted by parasitic NH countries and Japan. Our currency is by far the weakest and our players undoubtedly the best and hence our problem by far the biggest. "
Two sentences, two misconceptions.
1. The weak currency has nothing to do with the IRB/World Rugby. Not their fault. They have no obligation to protect a nations player pool against currency fluctuations. They can only prescribe as far as International sides are concerned, i.e. illegibility to represent a nation. They cannot prescribe to privately owned clubs/franchises who they may or may not employ. They clubs/franchises fall under the jurisdiction of World Rugby insofar as the game, player management, etc is concerned. The clubs/franchises are not members of World Rugby, though. The different countries/nations are.
2. Our problem is not the biggest. There are more NZ players in Europe than SA players. Our problem should not be the biggest. We have a bigger pool to draw players from than NZ and they are hit harder, as far as numbers of players that they lose are concerned.
The real problem is that the European clubs earn more income than the SH clubs. They draw bigger crowds which is why the media channels invest more money into them. In the UK, we have Sky and BT gunning at each other to get a chunk of broadcasting rights. In France they have Channel+ and another one. That is their main source of income. The SH have one media sponsor for all four of the SANZAR members. The game is not generating enough income in the SH to compete with the NH. That is the bottom line.

Not only is Quinn a mountain of a man, he is very aggressive. Check his Youtube footage out.......hits rucks with plenty of aggression and like Etzebeth, PSDT and co......likes to go on the charge.

This kid is a loss to SA of that there is no doubt. He and CJ Stander (staring for Munster at the moment) were our biggest losses.

Willemse, du Plessis and Kitshoff are even bigger losses. v/d Walt is another.

If Meyer had any brains he would award caps to Willemse, du Plessis, Kitshoff, v/d Walt and CJ this year in our minor fixtures. All 5 are test material players. If useless Meyer can call up Ross Cronje to a squad then these 4 should be a breeze.

I am not advocating that every young player that leaves be awarded a Bok cap, but I would certainly select merit players like these 5 in order to secure their services moving forward. The same rule would not apply to players like Jono Ross, Herbst, Rossouw de Klerk etc that have left.

Actually over the last year the Euro has fallen far more than the Rand.....vs the Mighty Dollar I mean. So currency cant be the issue. Just to put this issue to bed.... at the start of the financial crisis you could get $ 1.59 for a Euro....now you can get $ 1.13. A Euro decline of 29%.  The Rand has actually improved from R14.97 per dollar a few months later to R11.6 per dollar today. An improvement of 29% versus the dollar. Admittedly the Rand tanked at the start of the crisis, but it's trading in mid range today.

Currency is not the issue. It's a better salary, a more exciting life for a young man, a life line out of the country, a leve l playing field, a more glamorous tournament (the S15 has become a drag), less travel away from home and better wine.

This thread has taken a few wrong turns, Klown. Are you referring to Jean Deysel in your comment above? If so, he's never been particularly injury-prone, has he? I remember he had a serious knee injury about 5 years ago but when else has he been injury-prone?
I'm more worried about his discipline. He does have the occasional brain explosion . . . like when he stomped on Jordan Taufa against the Crusaders last season.

Cerundunce Windpomp please oak. We know what is happening here is SA and its devastating. You are most likely including PI players in your reckoning and coming to the wrong conclusion AGAIN.Noways have nz got more players than us overseas and they do not appear to be loosing top young talent to the extent we are.If you can list all nz players and Sa players with age plaing in NH and Japan and compare with SA.Give my regards to the girls on kamp ss and wee barlee and jamesie hunt. Hahahahahaahhahaha
Given our very weak currency amounts earned in NH currencies when translated back to rands is huge. Even young players these days feel compelled to accept these huge sums on offer.I see no reason why rules couldnt be implemented limiting the involvement of foreign players in clubs etc. IRB must take the lead.
Rooitwit stomping on an old crustie is only what these twits deserve!  Playing illegal rugby with a loaded squad is their forte  Bwahahhaahahahahaha ou rooitwit suddenly trying to appear right and propr. I recall complaining bitterly when a sharks palyer was spear tackled in front of Stuey Dickinson. The poor oke landed on his head (A red card for sure) I think the sharks got a penalty. Ou rooitwit then jumped in and had a go at poor Beeno saying I was squealing about the refs. Rooitwit probably took this course of action given his secret support for nz teams?

Redneck ... why do I have the impression of him sitting on the sideline often last season?

Let me see ... he played week 1 & 2 and then missed week 3 only to come back in week 4. But then he missed week 5 and 6 as well as week 8,11, 15, 17 and 18.

I would say that's rather injury prone ... wouldn't you?

@Beeno. I had a spreadsheet with the names of the SA and NZ players, in France, as they were for the 2012/13 season. I did not update it at for the 2013/14 season. At that stage (2012/13), there were more NZ players than SA players. I do know that, at the end of the 2013/14 season there were 11 new signings of NZ players and 8 SA players in the Top 14. I have now done a new spreadsheet, since I cannot find the previous one. It is probably still on my old laptop. I did not take down the names of the NZ and OZ players but there are now, at present more SA players than NZ players but they are not significantly more. I have not included any PI players at all. I have only counted players listed as New Zealand players.

These are the current numbers of players in the Top 14:
SA -55
NZ -49
Oz -17

The numbers for the ProD2 (second tier competition):
SA -26
NZ -15
Oz -8

These are the names of the SA players in France:
Top14
JC Janse van Rensburg
Gert Muller
Dewald Senekal
Jandré Marais

If you discard the players that you have either never heard of and/or who will not make it into a Super Rugby Franchise or a CC Premier Division side, the difference in numbers is insignificant.

Interestingly, though, is that there are more NZ players than SA players in England. None of the clubs, bar Saracens, have the huge numbers of SA and or foreign players that becs like us to believe. Out of the 12 South African players in the Premiership, 7 are with Saracens. The other 5 are with Bath (1), Wasps (1), Leicester Tigers (1) and London Welsh (2). There are 20 NZ and 6 Oz players in the Premiership. These are the SA players in the Premiership:
Francois Louw
Schalk Brits
Jared Saunders
Brett Sharman
Petrus du Plessis
Alistair Hargreaves
Ernst Joubert
Neil de Kock
Ashley Johnson
Sebastian De Chaves
Matthew Dobson
Ben Pienaar

As far as the RFU Rugby Championship(2nd tier) is concerned, there are 12 SA players, 7 NZ players and 5 Aussies.
Jared Saunders (On loan from Saracens)
Nick Fenton-Wells (c)
Darryl Veenendaal
Nick Koster
Kieran Goss
Jason Thomas
Ross Jones-Davies
Shaun Malton
Zylon McGaffin
Nick Schonert
Gerrit-Jan van Velze (c)
Dean Hammond

The totals for both tiers are;
SA -24
NZ -27
Oz -11

If you would like the names of the NZ, OZ and PI players in France and the UK & Ireland, you can do the research yourself. You are going to make a few interesting discoveries, especially in France, in the process.

The problem in the past was that players who decamped to Europe most were basically past their best and not really Springbok material anymore.   I looked at the names and could identify only six players who could have been serious contenders for Springbok selection.   Most of the players who are listed by you are technically and age-wise has-beens - and their absence do not have detrimental consequences for local SA Rugby.
Matter of fact is beneficial -since it creates opportunities for local talent to come through.
Whereas in the past the situation is that Clubs went for the older players when contracting them - the present scenario is more worrisome.   The clubs now target younger players - those in their prime performance age group and those with vast capacity development potential - players like Willmse, Du Plessis and Kitshoff - who are basically at the start of their playing careers on top level.   That has a damaging effect on local rugby and something needs to be done to stop the rot.
There is one worrying report I have seen in the local media - Du Plessis got miffed because Ludeke intended to move him to lock and contracted Labuschagne at a much higher price (R1 500 000) than he was paid (R800 000) to play at no 7.   That shows that Du Plessis was seriously underpaid by the Bulls .   The other issue is that Labuscgne is an excellent loosie - while Du Plessis is really a lock trying to play at 7.

@Mike. You are preaching to the converted as far as the ages of the SA players in France are concerned.

Where I do differ is that we are expecting the wrong guys to do something. Everybody are expecting the IRB/World Rugby to jump in and solve the issue. It is not. What would WR say say if the try to slam on the brakes and France, England, etc turns around and say: "What is the problem? We are not loosing any players." You cannot expect WR to come up with some kind of salary cap either. That would be like, for instance, an international body that governs engineers (if there was something like that) expecting to impose a salary cap on the salaries of engineers world wide to prevent South African engineers to leave Eskom and p!ss off abroad. WR can only lay down markers about the movement of players from one country of representation to another. That is why you would note that Rory Kockot is now listed as a French player and a French player he will remain.

I also think that you are not quite correct about the fact that "the most" of teh players on the list are "technically age-wise hasbeens". If you go check, you will see that there are a large number of youngsters in there. Have you noticed, for instance, Danie Gerber's son Danre? Now why would a Springbok great like Danie Gerber support his son to go play in France? It is no secret that Wynand Claasen encouraged his son, Antonie, to go play in France.

I do not know where you got teh figures in connection with Labuschagne and Du Plessis' Bulls offers from but I have read that the Bulls were trying everything for months to retain Du Plessis but there was no way that they could match it. I can also recall reading that he was due to get a big contract in France. Even if he only gets half of what the top French players get, he will be earning around €240K per annum. That is ZAR3.2M per annum. More than double what Labuschagne was earning. They had the same issue with Morne Steyn as well. There was no way in hell that they were going to match his French offer. Imagine if they were to triple the salaries of all their players to retain them?

The younger players you mentioned are relative unknowns in rugby circles here.   They did not feature prominently in Craven  Week and did not get Union contracts here.   They never made the SA Under 20 squad and also never feature in age group and provincial teams here.
Nobody could have any objection to players who do not make headway here to take up contracts overseas and no doubt there is a number of those around.   Even Swiel and Howard may be two such players - same with some of Dave's other favourites.
I do know that Jake has a "hit list" of players he wants to contract from SA - that was reported in the media here.
The story about Labuschagne and Du Plessis was in the paper here and even amounts wee mentioned.   Some articles one has to take with a pinch of salt - but there may be reason to believe that the Labuschagne issue has something to do with Du Plessis's final decision.
Incidentally one of the players we do not miss in SA is Morne Steyn - Stade Francais can have him with the greatest of pleasure - a typical never-has-been.

That is one of the issues that I believe that our systems are getting fundamentally wrong. We rely too much on Craven Week players. We all know how quotas and targets are the first port of call to make it into the Craven Week teams. They do not even try to hide it any more and it hasn't only started recently. Many of our top top players never even made the SA Schools team. Fourie du Preez is one example. Not all players are equally developed and skilled at around 17/18/19 years old. Andre Venter never even made his schools first team, if I am not mistaken. This Craven Week - SA Schools - Super Rugby - National side path is the biggest load of BS and it is going to hurt us at some stage. I am sure that there are players with big potential that are slipping through the holes in the net.

"The story about Labuschagne and Du Plessis was in the paper here and even amounts wee mentioned.   Some articles one has to take with a pinch of salt - but there may be reason to believe that the Labuschagne issue has something to do with Du Plessis's final decision.  "
I have to rely on News24, Supersport and IOL for news and I obviously cannot read all the local newspapers but I have not seen anything to suggest that Du Plessis was offered R800K and Lappies R1M and neither have I seen anything that suggested that Du Plessis is leaving because of the Lappies. So, a link to such article/s would be handy, thank you.

And then, of course you cannot let a moment pass to p!ss on your pet hate again.

You mentioned Morne - I did not.  .   I read the article where the issue was raised - but decided not to post in on site and save Labuschagne another vitrolic attack by Mozart and snide remarks by Dave.   However, I can assure you there was an article to that effect in one of the papers.  The figures mentioned in the article was R800 000 for Du Plessis and R1 500 000 for Lappies.
Look not all players come through Craven Week - a typical example is Damien de Allende.   However, I do believe that the various franchises has scouts and they unearth most of the youngsters - whether they are Craven Weekers or not.
Problm is - as you say - some people are early physical developers and some are later.  However, you are not really au fait with the school rugby systems in SA.   It changed massively over the past few years and in fact franchises pay pupils from a very early age - even from 14 years old.  Rugby schools get massive sponsorships from local business and their agents  scour all school in regions and areas for any potential schoolboys with talent.    I do not think they miss much anymore.    A few late developers maybe - but they get picked up at University level through the Varisty Cup system.

Well just give me a link to the article. Simple as that. The Bulls obviously missed Morne Steyn, hence their efforts to retain him. Who gives a monkey's of you did not miss him.
I understand the change in the schools rugby set-up but the be-all and the end-all of everything still seems to be the Craven Week.
The fact is though, that you have created quite an anomaly with an earlier remark. Everybody seems to be ticked off about the players moving abroad and now, after viewing the list of players, you have decided that most are either has-beens or youngsters who were not going to make it big in SA in any case. Why the uproar then?

The Bulls always played an out-dated style of rugby into which Morne Steyn fitted - for the rest he was useless.  They would obviously have wanted to retain him - but they belatedly realized - as did Stade Francais - that Morne is utterly useless from a comprehensive rugby perspective.
Believe it or not the rules of rugby changed drastically since 2008 and even the NH nations use their backlines for the purpose backlines was provided - and not as dummies standing around to defend only.   The latter is what Morne did to Bulls rugby and for a while it worked - but nowadays it does not work.
Read the following article - which you can find on Supersport-rugby:-
" South African rugby bosses are readying themselves to try and stave off a massive assault on their player corps, from former Springbok coach Jake White.

While European clubs poaching local players is nothing new, there is a lot of talk in local rugby circles about White and his “shopping list” – which includes a number of top Springbok and local players to move to Montpellier.

White has apparently been given the go-ahead – and loads of cash to back it – to lure some of the top South African talent to Europe, and right now he is targeting specific top South African talent.

This latest threat, coupled with the natural exodus after the Rugby World Cup later this year, may well see a massive group of players leave these shores again.

Already White has signed Western Province flyhalf Dimitri Catrakilis and the Bulls SA under-20 giant Jacques du Plessis to join the French club at the end of the season and it is clear he is intent on building a Super team for the French club.

There are rumours that both the Du Plessis brothers – Bismarck and Jannie – have already signed despite clauses in their SA Rugby contracts that only allow them to start negotiating in June.

White apparently has a “hit list” of South African players – many of them who are not Springboks already – that he is targeting to sign for the French club.

The former Bok coach’s knowledge of local players is to his advantage, although his chequered history with clubs – White hardly stays at a club for more than a year – and his acrimonious fallout with the Sharks and ACT Brumbies in recent years doesn’t seem to count against him.

At the moment it is the cash talking, so much so that the Bulls knew straight away they weren’t able to even come close to matching the massive offer that White made to the 120kg utility forward.

In Du Plessis’ case there is more to the story. There were whispers at Loftus Versfeld that he wasn’t happy with the arrival of Cheetahs flank Lappies Labuschagne – on a contract said to be more than 2x Du Plessis’ current salary, and was furthermore nonplussed by the prospect of moving to lock.

Given this background, the massive offer – said to be in the region of R5-million a season – was almost impossible to refuse, especially as it is around six times the youngster’s current salary.

The weak rand played its part, but not even an earnest plea from Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer – who phoned Du Plessis and tried to convince him to stay, could stop the player from following the money.

White has also lured his namesake – Brumbies scrumhalf Nick White to join Montpellier – who already have South Africans Wynand Olivier and Robert Ebersohn, and New Zealander Rene Ranger on their books.

The irony of White doing exactly what he always complained about regarding overseas clubs is not lost on the SA Rugby hierarchy either, but in a professional game where money rules, it is unlikely that they can do much to stop him.

Still, the rugby public shouldn’t be surprised if they hear a number of big names heading to Montpellier on big money contracts in the next few months.

Du Plessis and Catrakilis are said to be the first of many on the hit list, and with a shift in momentum after the World Cup, the hit list could simply quicken an already precarious exodus of talent from these shores."
That is what I was referring to earlier.  Look especially at the highlighted paragraphs.
Your idea about the Craven Week is seriously out-dated.   The real deal is the schools rugby competition covering much more than the Craven Week.   There are at least 30 schools from throughout SA involved in that series sponsored by FNB - as well as a separate series sponsored by Wildeklawer.   Thousands of players go through that system - only a portion of which ever play Craven Week Rugby.          Lastly - thank you very much for the long list of players provided.   The fact is that numbers are not important - it has nothing to do with those players who are generally classed as has-beens or who did not really make the grade in local rugby.    - The uproar has everything to do with top class young players leaving our shores.

I cannot respond in full right now but there you have it. There were whispers..... In other words.... speculation. And... looks like, as I suspected, fairly conservative with my estimation of what he was offered by the French club.
