The rugby world has been swirling with rumors about Jean-Luc du Preez's potential retirement due to concussion concerns. Recently, the French rugby press, stirred by comments from Bordeaux Bègles president Laurent Marti, speculated that the Springbok might have to prematurely end his career. However, du Preez has firmly quashed these rumors.

Marti expressed grave concerns about du Preez's health in a statement to Sud Ouest, saying,

"I have serious doubts, but there are medical experts for that. If it were my son, I would ask him to stop because I’m very scared."

This comment fueled speculations in the Midi Olympique about du Preez's future in rugby, suggesting that retirement might be on the cards for the 30-year-old flanker.

Contrary to these claims, du Preez remains optimistic about his return to the field. In an interview with Rapport, he stated his intentions to bounce back for the next season.

"I hope to be ready next season... We’re off for six weeks, then we start pre-season preparations. I hope to be ready for the pre-season, which starts at the end of July."

Having not played since January 18, du Preez has been under the careful supervision of medical specialists who have recommended a period of rest. His health has reportedly improved significantly over the past few months. "My symptoms have improved a lot over the last few months. I’m feeling a lot better at the moment," he shared, emphasizing his cautious approach to recovery. "I just thought it was better not to take any chances this past season. I hope to get back on the field as soon as possible."

The past year has indeed been challenging for du Preez, marked by minimal playtime, "I’ve never played so little rugby in a season," he reflected. Despite these hurdles, his inclusion in Rassie Erasmus' virtual alignment camp for overseas-based players earlier this year indicates that his career still holds promising prospects.

Du Preez's resilience in the face of adversity and his determination to return to his peak form will be something to watch as the new Top 14 campaign approaches in late September.
