Johan Goosen © Gallo Images   Goosen returns at the perfect time by Brenden Nel 21 August 2012, 15:56

The arrival of Johan Goosen back on the Free State Rugby scene couldn’t have come fast enough for the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, especially after they had a crippling double injury blow from their victory over the Blue Bulls last Friday night.

Goosen will know later today whether he is cleared to play this weekend, but the confidence with which Cheetahs assistant coach Hawies Fourie spoke to supersport.com about his chances makes it seem a fait accompli that he will be back in action against neighbours Griquas this coming weekend.

Goosen injured his shoulder in scoring a stunning try against the Highlanders in the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament, and was forced into a four-month layoff because of the injury.

His return couldn’t come at a better time, especially as the Cheetahs have lost their regular halfback combination of Riaan Smit and Piet van Zyl for the rest of the Currie Cup due to injury and will have to make do without them.

Riaan Smit, the man who took over the kicking duties from Goosen, will miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury, while Van Zyl, the nippy halfback, dislocated his collarbone against the Blue Bulls and will also not play again this season.

Tewis de Bruyn has recovered from his injuries and will deputise for Sarel Pretorius at halfback, while Ryno Benjamin is also fit again and is likely to take over from Smit, who played on the wing against the Bulls.

Fourie said that Goosen’s return though, was a massive boost for the side ahead of their clash with Griquas.

“He is just seeing the specialist this afternoon just to make 100% sure, but he was training with us last week and if he gets the all-clear he will play. We saw what he meant to the Super Rugby team, and we hope to have Johan available for a number of Currie Cup games, even though we’ve heard mutterings about the Springboks.

"We will see how long it will be before they call him up, but at the moment he needs game time to get his self-confidence back.”

The rest of the Cheetahs' injury list shows there is still some light at the end of the tunnel, with Heinrich Brussow returning in around 3-4 weeks, the same time period for Coenie Oosthuizen, who will undergo a “pain block” operation on his neck before returning.

Boom Prinsloo however, will be out for four months with his shoulder injury.

------------------------

I say we call him up for the last 2 games of the 4 nations.

Yeah give this laaitjie a chance and he will show you what a real flyhalf is all about, if we manage him and give him enough chances, i am certain he could be then seen in the calibre of a Dan Carter, Cruden and Larkham.

This guy showed more this year in the Super 15 series than either Carter and Cruden could manage.   The latter two played in two of the top teams in the series and Goosen in a very average team - yet he showed more than the two players mentioned.

He is going to be tops.

Would like to see the following Springbok backline in two years time:-

Vermaak

Goosen

Serfontein

Jordaan

Pietersen

Hougaard

Lambie

Those guys would be able to give any backline in the world the run-around. Speed - good defence - excellent ball sense - clever ball players - what else could anyone want?

Leave him out of the mix this year. Dont rush him back Free State. Let him play some club games etc. A bit of Currie Cup and then work on conditioning etc for next year.

As I have said before this guy needs to be carefully managed but some hot heads are not listening. Hope Meyer goes carefully with Goosen.

Very glad to hear Coenie could be back soon as well as Brussouw.

@ not so clever mike..... "This guy showed more this year in the Super 15 series than either Carter and Cruden could manage"

Showed more what??????????  Leg perhaps??

The stats don't lie buddy.....

The only reason Crudens not playing despite finishing top points scorer in the SuperXV with the Almighty Chiefs is cause he's not from Canterbury.

Just like Meyer is a die hard Bulls supporter. Same goes for Hansen and Canterbury and he will always pick Carter ahead of Cruden.

Still early days though in the 4 Nations so fingers crossed Cruden gets a run soon...

Wrong again brycy the ab selctors do not easily discard a veteran test player.

What is of more telling interest is the loading of the crusaders to position them to win Super 15. The nz oaks may now have switched to loading the chiefs as it was becoming obvious to all the nz were loading the crusaders side with all balcks to ensure they won the comp. I started  to call the crusader the all black crusaders  or abc.

Brycy you have to admit its hard to put one across the wide awake Beeno!

Brycy

You are a really toe Kiwi.  Really as brainless as they come.   He played for about half the games Cruden played and at that stage when he was injured - he was way ahead of Cruden in scoring points as well as performances    Was the ESPN flyhalf of the week - time and time again - ahead of both Cruden and Carter.

I know dumbness cannot be helped by people - but in your case a education programme may help.

As to the selection of Carter - he and McCaw must thank their lucky stars they are still in the All Black team,  They are there on reputation more than anything else.   Any new Zealander criticising those two are regarded as treasonous - they are the holy cows of New Zealand.   For your information I personally think that Cruden played better than Carter in this years Super 15.

Bean Brain glad to see you're learning your ABC s.... Terrible problem the kiwis have with so much talent to choose from... Bit of a dilemma for Hansen to be so spoiled for choice and such a luxury to have the best players from the Super XV comp in reserve....No wonder the ABs are World Champions i guess.

Goosen has impressed as i've stated in the past when he ran around Masaga but you yarpies are a bit fragile and quite susceptible to injuries so i'd advise him not to run into Read as Pocock found unfortunately the hard way.....

Top of the morning t oyou my friend.

Brycy a few things you need to understand. Your super 15 depth is based on islander imports. You guys have deliberately done zip for islander rugby so you can live off their talent. Strategically SARFU should have had the nous to fight for islander rugby so that they could have their own teams and players kept at home.

As for Read he can only hope he never has to face a loose trio of Alberts, Burger and Vermuelen. He would become a very bent read after that!

I wouldn't harp on your word chump status brycy as it only begs the question.

Brycy Brycy Brycy...About as predictable as meeting a dumb kiwi...Loves that Japie word so much but doesnt know what it means or how to spell it..He is right though..The Sprinkbok boys are very fragile and susceptible to injuries..Thats why our first choice flyhalf was ruled out of the world cup by the very intense and physical art of...wait for it...kicking a rugby ball... Thats why our awesome second choice and 3rd choice fly halfs limped from the field too. Thats why our "awesome" 8th man who will terrorise the boks apparently spent a chunk of the S15 on the sidelines.

You can say what want about the AB's being world champs but I guess they dodged a bullet thanks to old Brycy Lawrence. Come to think of it, all kiwi's with the name Bryce know nothing about rugby and are just plain moffies...Go google that one...The amount of times the Boks had attacking ball in the aussies 22 and 5 metres out before ur mate blew the whistle said it all. A normal ref and we would have wasted the Aussies easily, not battled past them like your boys did...France had the AB's but old Craig Joubert couldnt bare to see the AB's fail again..Not at home...He just wasnt as blatant as Bryce!!! France were awarded almost no penalties even though they dominated possession and McCaw was on the park..Very strange...Just my opinion but I suppose just like the "Suzy" theory the AB's decided to blame 1995 on, there is no evidence to back it up so it will remain an opinion...

All Brycy is about is the personal attacks on "yarpies" but he really just shows his stupidity over and over again. Not a good look for kiwi's Brycy. Stay on the dole mate...u are a thick as they come!

really happy to see this freak johan goosen back in action.....i wont risk him in the champs yet. i do think he needs more recover time plus he should be a starter in my view for the end of year tour surely. the cheetahs really plays like a champ side with him in the mix. he fits so well in there amazing game pattern. with brussow also due to be ready the cheetahs can be title contenders maybe. does not matter what the game situation is the cheetahs always has a crack at any team. proper rugby not the one trick pony WP style

Bean Brain, your mate with the skanky hoes keeps butting into our conversation. Sounds like he has issues with my spelling or something. Not sure what he's ranting on about but i think he's still upset about us Kiwis being World Champions. Some people like to live in the past i guess when this is 2012 the year of the Almighty Chiefs and i'm sure all those that took Brycy's advice and put their house on the Almighty Chiefs are extremely grateful for the expert advice. Free of charge i might add.

That said,  here in Beaver country ,South Auckland, the centre of the rugby universe we still toast our homeboy Stephen Donald for kicking the winning goal that won us the World Cup. Good on ya mate.

Brycy

I know you do not like to debate issues with me - but your comments above indicate that you do not try to analyze issues on an objective and critical basis.   When I try to do an analysis I am very critical of the Springbok players and point out where I believe they were poor - whether other board members like it r not.   I wrote some scathing comments about the expected performances in the 2nd test against the Argentinians - and that clearly indicates I am as much as possible unbiased and fair.

Lets look critically at some of the New Zealand players and their performances during the past Super 15 and thn see whether I am right or wrong as the tests continue.   Specifically I would like to mention the two players names that were mentioned in this thread - Carter and Cruden.   Since his return from injury Carter has not been the same force he was over the previous 5 years.   Looking objectively at his performances I gained the impression that he has lost a bit of his speed and inventurous play - not the player that I maintained over the past five years as the best player I have ever seen playing at flyhalf.   Don;t get me wrong he is still a good flyhalf - but not an excellent one as he used to be,

Cruden showed massive improvement in Super 15 - and was magnificant in the Irish test.   In subsequent games he was less so - but to my mind over the past three months he performed better than Carter - who in another tear would reach his "sell-by"  date.   There is no doubt that Cruden is the future New Zealand flyhalf - since I do not rate Barrett as anything near good enough to fill that role.   In all fairness I must say that Carter in his prime was most likely twice the flyhalf Cruden will ever be - he does not have the class of Carter.

The other players whose names came up previously are Mc Caw and Read.   Let me be blunt about them as well.    A year before McCaw was selected as an All Black I on another Board identified him as a really magnificient player and future All Black captain.   The New Zealanders on that Board totally disagreed with me - but that is another story.   After playing to his potential up to th stage where the rules were changed - he  was without a shadow of a doubbt the best loosie in the world.   Howevr, over the last 18 months he really showed wear and tear and he was never even considered by independent onservers as one of the top loosies in Super 15 this year.    Because of injuries and aging - hellost some speed and from the innovative and skilled player he used to be - became a Potgieter type of loosie.   In the process he is penalized quite frequently.   I am serious in saying that new Zealand Rugby shoud seriously consider a repalcment for McCaw.

Insofar as Read is concerned - He is a average no 8 on international level.   Last Saturday he was one of the weakest All Black players on the park.   He looked clueless and lost during most of the time.  Initially thought he had all the potential - but now I think he is on par with the Potgieters.

@clever mike, all you have done is rubbished the ABs. As i've told you in the past ,everything you post is negative and i try and avoid negative toxic people. Negative people tend to spread their depressing outlook  and a perpetual negative manner indicates depression or maybe another mental illness. Try to be more positive mate.

Here are several tips on how to think positively:

  1. Display a more positive emotional and mental attitude toward yourself, other people and situations.

  2. Refuse to participate in negative inner dialogues. It's just a waste of time and energy.

  3. Don't allow disappointments, difficulties and obstacles affect your moods and state of mind.

  4. Refuse and reject negative thinking. Either replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts, or engage yourself in some activity that will divert your attention from the negative thoughts.

  5. Don't allow what people think and say affect your mind and mood.

  6. Associate with people who bring something of value into your life. Avoid people who sap your energy and enthusiasm. If you can't avoid them, learn how stay detached when your are in their company.

  7. Say positive things about yourself and about other people.

  8. Compliment people when you feel they deserve it.

  9. Have faith in yourself and in your abilities.

  10. Try doing new things or old things in a new way. Doing things differently will help you be more creative and therefore more positive. Go to a different restaurant, eat different food, change the way you dress, start reading a new book or find a new hobby.

Brycy

Can you read English?   I have not rubbished any All Black players - and especially not the four players mentioned by me.   Magnificient and good means positive perceptions - not negative ones    What I did say is there are indicationsthat Carter and McCaw are NOT the players they used to be - they were the best flyhalf and loosie in the World two years ago - they are not anymore ad there are clear indications of that.   It is not rubbishing them - it  represents mere facts that pschophants do not want to accept.

Cruden is good and I said he is the future All Black flyhalf - what is negative about that?   Am I not allowed to say that he is not up to the standard Carter display when he was a magnificient flyhalf three years ago?   Well he is not and that is a fact.   Barrett is not the type of flyhalf that would be a matchwinner for the All Blacks.

The only negative I said was Read.   If you think that he was good last Saturday - then you are entitled to your opinion - but objectively he is nothing more than an average 8.

No Brycy, just like you do to Clevermike, you take things the wrong way. No one dislikes you here but what makes you hard to take is that you take every opportunity to throw "japie" into your comments. No one comes on and says, "You sheep shaggers" or other derogatory things about kiwi's. People may not always agree with each other on here and attack their comments but we dont attack personally. The banter is what makes it fun. We are all people with a common goal here. We love rugby. No need for derogatory references to any nation.

I am not sour that the AB's won the WC. If it wasn't SA, I would hope it was the AB's coz I dont think the Aussies are that great. Southern hemisphere dominance. I dont believe the Northern hemisphere teams are in the same league as the Southern teams strength on strength. It was the AB's time. Everything was aligned with them winning it and a choke this time around would have been totally unacceptable. Forget about Bryce Lawrence and what he did to SA. Thats water under the bridge...We have moved on from that... Credit to the Chiefs to. It was their time as well. They absolutely blitzed the Sharks and although I am proud of the Sharks, maybe things would have been different had the Stormers beaten us. Guess we will never know and it worked out for the Chiefs. Same as if SA had beaten Aus in the WC...Guess we will never know what might have happened then but the AB's and Chiefs alike played what was infront of them and they were deserved winners...

Getting back to Johan Goosen, because that is what this article is actually about. While I agree that he really played some special rugga at the start of the season, I am just scared that people have elevated him so much, that expectations of him have now become unreasonable! It is starting to sound like people expect him to be the next Dan Carter, and he may well be, but seriously, he's had half a season, is that really enough time?

The quick answer is no..Goosen will not do well for the Boks right now. Not whilst we are playing a 10 man brand of rugby. It doesnt suit Lambie and Goosen. Morne Steyn and Peter Grant are probably our 2 best flyhalfs at boring rugby...Throw Jordaan in the mix with Lambie at 15, a few others like Taute, JJ Engelbrecht and Hougaard on the wing and Goosen can express himself. He looked good in a Cheetahs side that ran the ball and he can use all his skills. Boks gameplan will sink him as it has done many other great talents..

Just because he looks good for Cheetahs with their gameplan, does not mean he can do the same for the Boks because he will be coached out of it...The right backline coach with the right total rugby gameplan and I reckon Goosen is our man... I reckon Lambie could be on the same level if not better..That would be our answer to Dan Carter and Cruden...Just as much skill, both better defenders than Cruden..Its all in our gameplan!!! Its clear to see. I mean, all of us are generally wanting to see the same players in the bok set up with a running gameplan yet these guys are playing currie cup whilst our "experienced" players are still there. How come us (the public) see things so differently to the coaches?? Surely that cant be. I mean, are we being silly by thinking guys like Goosen, Jordaan, Taute can bring a new dimension to Bok back play! Keep the same gameplan as the last 3 years with the same players executing it and expecting different results. Time to build to the 2015 WC is now. I hope Meyer is not missing a trick!

Boklogic, I do not quite agree with your argument about Goosen and 10-man rugby. I used to keep stats on the players from a UK based website. Unfortunately the stats was open for anybody, on their website, by mistake. They have locked it out for the public around the end of week 9 of the S15. At the time there were a number of arguments about Goosen and Steyn and it was said the he kicks less than Morne and that he runs more. The facts actually proved that they ratio between their number of kicks, passes and runs per game were more or less the same. In fact they were the only two flyhalves who had a fairly equal spread between the three dimension, i.e. kick, pass and run.

The main difference between the two, at that stage, was that Goosen was much more dangerous on the run, and made more running metres than Steyn. His line-kicks was also a bit longer than that of Steyn. Although Goosen put over some monster kicks, the average distance of Steyn's successful kicks were a few metres more than that of Goosen. Steyn's defence was better, despite the general consencus, at the time, that Steyn is a crap defender.

I still have the spreadsheets with the data somewhere and would post it here if it was possible. Fact is that none of the other flyhalves, i.e. Grant, Jantjies, Lambie, Ebersohn, etc came close to Goosen and Steyn.

Its a complete joke that he got mom - he did NOTHING of note. He was however better than the piss poor shit he has dished out over the past few months - but to clarify, what he did dish out was still way below the expectations of a quality test pivot

to be fair he did make a massive step up but he was not as mecurial as a carter or cruden and co can be. so for him i reckon saterday was about as good as it gets. he generally crumbles very badly against high tempo attack minded teams so i think he will be okish the next game against the pumas but come the wallies and AB i really hope he gets it together. he has never set the world alight and the young talent that there are now in our system does offer that x factor one needs create that moment of brillance to win it in a tight game.

to be fair morne has never been that dynamic in his career. one cant blaim the guy for trying but he is a product of a flawed system that coached him into being so one dimensional. so for him saterday was pretty much as good as it gets. even at his best i doubt he can roll with the punches of the big boys. i hope i am wrong but the next couple of weeks will reveal all

Agreed, that is as good as it gets with Morne, which begs the question - why has SA settled for such an average rugby player as their pivot? Its simple, we are just too bloody conservative and Meyer is of the same mould sadly.

However, my hope is they Meyer recognises his shortfalls and moves on from this conservative approach and starts by selecting a creative, all round 10 and he need look no further than Goosen.

Same applies to 13, we cant have an old retreaded 12 as our Bok 13, its madness......how bloody short sighted is this?

Meyer is going to learn the hard way in the next few weeks - the writing is on the wall
