Cape Town - Former Springbok scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen has predicted a bleak future for Springbok rugby.

A tweet sent out on Friday by Van der Westhuizen appeared to warn those in charge of SA Rugby that they are damaging the Springbok brand.

Van der Westhuizen, who is suffering from the terminal Motor Neuron Disease, appears to be upset at the off-field issues around the Springbok team in recent times.

Van der Westhuizen tweeted:

Remember this tweet. The big sponsors pulled out. The Coach resigned. They know what's coming. #thebeginningoftheend of Springbok rugby.

What exactly Van der Westhuizen is upset about is not known, but it's not too hard to speculate.

The Springboks endured a torrid 2015 season, losing all three of their Rugby Championship matches, including a first ever loss to Argentina.

They also suffered an embarrassing defeat to Japan at the Rugby World Cup, before progressing to the semi-finals where the All Blacks ended their title chances.

The Boks suffered a further blow last month when two key sponsors - Absa and BMW - ended their allegiances with the team, while coach Heyneke Meyer last week indicated that he will not re-apply for his position when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Following Meyer’s resignation, SARU held a press conference at its headquarters in Plattekloof on Friday where president Oregan Hoskins addressed journalists.

There Hoskins made it clear that whoever comes in as new coach will have transformation as his most important task, with SARU aiming for the Springbok team to be made up of 50% black players by 2019.

"Whoever wants to apply for the job needs to know that transformation is going to be on top of his agenda, or else he shouldn’t apply," Hoskins emphasised.

"We as an organisation are going to have to be much, much harder than we’ve ever been. We don’t have another opportunity. We’ve signed an agreement with the sports governing body in the country (SASCOC) and the ministry and we believe in it. So as a sport we need to go forward with that in mind."

While for the moment there will be no specific quota system in place, there will be severe pressure on the next coach to select more black players.

The 44-year-old Van der Westhuizen played 89 Tests for the Springboks between 1993 and 2003.

He scored a then-Springbok record 38 tries and is widely regarded as one of the game’s finest-ever scrumhalves.

The real decay started under Meyer - but the political interference began years ago and is responsible for selection based on race - not competence and performance.  I have no problem with players who perform -I have a problem with selection based on race.  Hansen referred to that when discussing selections by Meyer and that remains a problem in SA Rugby.

Viwe Mjiwu ?@ViweMjiwu Dec 7

@9Joost sponsors pulled out way before Heyneker Meyer decided not to run as coach, they pulled out because of lack of transformation

Martin Kaufmann ?@martin41060 Dec 4

@9Joost @retiefdan No. Lets be positive, new beginnings. 80% win ratio is on its way

Sean O'Hagan ?@Ohagansoo 23h23 hours ago

@9Joost you are so right.... Won't be long and all springbok supporters will be supporting teams like New Zealand. Don't support losers.

Musawenkosi Mdlalose ?@musamdlalose 4h4 hours ago

@9Joost It's da beginning of da end of racism in rugby... We know da playin field is not level, Sir. Sponsors want a united team, we're not.

leonard gray ?@lenny619 18h18 hours ago

@9Joost 100% agreed, the new team must not have tje honour of calling themselves Springboks as the best team will not be taking the field

Zuma is a disgrace and has turned the ANC into a disgrace, a tool for his protection and benefit. If they want to "transform the lives of millions of poor black people", they should do so applying real political and economic measures. Rugby is not going to transform nothing, it's just a sport.
This "rugby transformation" is just the showcase to hide that the real transformation is a complete failure.

The SA rugby had many big problems by itself (inability to produce quality backline players, archaic gameplan, lack of quality coaches,...) and this 50/50 measure is going to finish it off.
to impose this measure in the elte rugby instead of promoting the rugby from the grassroots is to put the cart before the horse and this has never worked.

the Springboks-All Blacks were the best matches of the season,... a pity to know we'll enjoy just a few more

Well said. The country continues to be race obsessed which provides a smoke screen to hide the ANC pathetic attempts to run the country.

So ab ass now confirms he likes race based sections in the job market. Dont worry ab ass thats exactly what is happening here.  Racism in rugby is an enternatinment problem but the racist anc is far more sinister than that.It is of course the end of Bok rugby. Only a very cynical, unprincipled coach or someone like allistar Coetzee would apply for the job.
One must decide which team you will be supporting in future. Heck I could even find myself supporting the all blacks against these so called Boks!!! Definitely wont suppport a quota side. Its been bad enough as it is but this is the last straw. Fans must just stay away.
Also find an alternate sport to support. I commend tennis to you.

So after 21 years of freedom for all, these stupid fucking ignorant pricks are still talking transformation.....do they begin to appreciate just how fucking stupid they sound?

Let me guess, in another 21 years they will still be throwing the transformation word around

This will be like the PdV saga.
Year One....players will not be selected on merit.
Year Two....the few remaining sponsors will threaten to leave, the cash cow will dry up. Much more selection flexibility will emerge
Year 3 ....the composition of the team will change and a new performance culture will be embraced.
Year 4...despite the new performance culture, we will lose in the WC  QFs to the Bargies as our Bok greats like Habana, JP, JdV, F du P, Victor, Beast and Schalk .....are replaced by the new useless breed of young guns like Kriel, A llende, Faf, Malherbe and Lomp.
That folks is the future.

 Mozart
We would habe done better in the WC if Victor was not there.   De Villiers role in the past WC was  near to zero with substandard performances.  Beast did squat and what Schalk did was highly unproductive - not the fault of the latter - but to Meyer's game plan.
Fact is the players you love was good in the past and past tense the past two years.   They were of very little or no use this year and as they were selected on reputation and not performance they were in fact a serious deficiency in the Springbok squad.
I thank them for their services of the past - and wish them well for the future - but am relieved that they are not in the picture to bugger up SA rugby in future.

Well if the PDV saga is the measure at least he bloody won a title or two unlike the utterly useless Meyer and his geriatrics....so all should be well.
Only a complete idiot of a coach would fail to produce the goods with a bunch of youngsters who are better equipped other than at wing than the class that started out a decade ago.
Willie is better than Kirchner or Percy ever was.
Kriel and Vorster are better than Fourie and well no one really.
de Allende and Serf looked better equipped than Jean and Olivier.
Pollard is twice the player useless Morne is.
du Preez had the goods but Faf could be our Smith.
Kitshoff is better than Beast, Malherbe is far better than Jannie.
Bismark and Strauss stand tall but look out for Marx
Etzebeth is better than Bakkies ever was. Lood looks set to be better than Matfield was - not to forget PSDT and Willemse.
Kriel is better than Louw or Schalk as 6s. Vermeulen bridges the gap between the age groups. The likes of Coetzee, Arno Botha, du Plessis etc are up there with the best of 10 years ago.

But you were the great Kirchner fan Dave, I told you he was useless.
Kriel and Vorster are just concepts. Kriel might as well not have played in the WC for all the effect he had. and you howl about the Japanese loss....Kriel produced the final nail in the coffin.
Allende and Serf better than JDV..... I'm guessing JdV scored 10 times as many tries as either in the same number of tests.
Pollard is our one backline player with potential
Faf is a provincial player, not fit to be mentioned with du Preez, who beat Wales with superb execution of a set play.
Kitshoff has not played one test...Malherbe breezed through the WC facing subs in the semis and a weak prop in the QFs. And then luckily dodged Ayerza.
Marx's(sic) labour theory of value(look it up) wont work in tests.
Etzebeth is as good as Bakkies....Matfield is still way better than Lomp, who blew the NZ test and Stephanie who was such a disaster he didn't get to play in the important games.
And Kriel is unproven, while Coetzee, Botha and du Plessis have been proven to be unsuited.
Of all these players perhaps Pollard and Etzebeth might make it in the AB system. But yet you expect these guys to replace the Bok greats and prevail. Pretty soon they will fall into the Kirchner class, players you ardently supported but now pretend you never supported. .

BlackPOwer says something thats right on the mark and farknuts van beendik says some nonsense .Par for course .Like our Basque Buddy says its window dressing to distract from the shabby ,empty interior where young black players dont have the basis for a successful career path .You have a huge number of black dudes with the attributes needed to play rugby and theres no justification for not tapping into that .And the Boks still came 3rd only losing the semi to probably the greatest test side in the modern or indeed any era.

Ag kak man, yes I liked Kirchner, but Willie is far better - is the point

Kriel made more clean breaks than any other centre in the WC, not bad for a lad that hardly saw the ball. He is 21 and in his first season of test rugby. Has far more skill than Fourie ever had and I rated Fourie. No the team lost to Japan, it should never have been close - that's how shit Meyer was as a coach......but that escapes you of course. Vorster is a great prospect, far better than useless Adi Jacobs.

Yep by the time DA and Serf are done, they will have left Jean in the dust. Far better equipped to beat defenders. I rated Jean but these two are better and it does not end there. Add Odendaal and Frans Venter to the equation.

Pollard is great, but de Allende and Kriel are even better

du Preez was a boring 9, offered very little with ball in hand, solid at best. Faf has test player written all over him, but sadly our utterly useless coach decided old men like du Preez and Pienaar were better - how pathetically conservative. Faf is a huge prospect, rips defences to shreds with his creativity. Offers far more than Pienaar has ever at 9. Missed opportunity by Meyer, something you are very good at.

I don't need to see Kitshoff at test level to know he would be supreme. He is the best loosehead in the game right now. Malherbe was a revelation after the utterly useless Jannie, chalk and cheese. Faced subs against NZ in the semi did he? Wow you speak shit.

You don't even know who Marx is - so don't insult me with your analysis

Bullshit Etzebeth is far better than Bakkies and Lood has already proved that aged 22 he is better than Matfield was at the same age. PSDT had little to do in the WC so judging him is feeble. Add Willemse and a few others and we have more depth at lock than we have ever had.

Ah so Botha, Coetzee and du Plessis have proven to be unsuited.....based on bloody what - what a joke

Its ignorance and a total unawareness of the great talent we have at our disposal that has fools and our now historic coach clutching at straws

We have more great young talent than we have ever had
