I do not know whether you knew the rcibg hustory well. I became a close friend of Joy Barendse - whose ex-husband Charkie was a top jokcy for many years in teh 1950's and 1960'd/ Joy Barendse duagther Kerry married Aubrey Roberts and her two daughters married Jeff Lloyd (called the Governor in racing circles) and Glynn Schofield,
From the 1970's I went to the races together with Joy and Kerry regularly. Normally we sat in the members area to have lunch and often even the table next to the Oppenheimers and Gary Player, Gary was at the Summer Cup race in November when it came out he is 91 years old,
Aubrey and after he died Glyn invited only family members to have Christmas dinner wth them - the only exception was me, When Lloyd and Schofield left SA in 2007 the tears were streaming when I had a farewell meal at a restaurant in Umhlanga, So I promised to visit the family in 2008. Joy died in Australia - she was 101 years old,
I always phone them in Australia a few times a year..
In the late 1970's my net income was R550 a month, That did not bother me until I found that my money turnover in my cheque account was R17 000 a month - a massive amopunt those days, All coming from racing wins. I went to a race meeting in June 1980 - and took R30 with me. I backed every winner that day. One horae I backed in the 6th race was called Blazing inferno T 6/1, After watching the horses going io start I saw the ofdds went up to 10/1. I said hell that is unbelievable so I went to every bookmaker - 14 of them - and put a bet of R50 each on Blazing Inferno. The horse won by 2 lengths and my collection prioess started, So my next bet was on Over the Air - putting a R1000 bet on that one. When I got home I found that I had R15 000 with me.
The system was fairly regular go to the races in summer and to rugby in winter - bar a few major races and cricket tests after 1992/ I must admit I miss that very much .
