Leinster's head honcho Leo Cullen is throwing his support behind the South African teams grappling with the dual demands of the Vodacom URC and the Investec Champions Cup. With a review looming over SA Rugby due to concerns about player burnout, speculation is swirling about a potential withdrawal from the Champions Cup, a move that teams like the Sharks and Stormers vehemently oppose.
On the cusp of the Champions Cup final in Bilbao where Leinster will face off against the current champions Bordeaux Bègles, Cullen shared his views:
"The South Africans have added hugely to our domestic competition [URC]. They’re still trying to figure out how to manage the problem of that [player workload]. But they’ll get better at it."
This comes amidst threats from the Sharks owner to slash funding, intensifying the drama.Meanwhile, the format of the Champions Cup could be on the chopping block again with proposals circulating to ditch the pool stage for a straight knockout format, reducing the number of teams to 16. This is a significant shift from the current setup, which sees 24 teams battle it out in four pools before progressing to the last 16.
Cullen, a seasoned veteran with four Champions Cup wins under his belt both as a player and a coach, emphasized the significance of the tournament:
"It’s an incredible tournament to be part of. I hope the organisers protect it."
Leinster is seeking their fifth crown, their first since their victory in Bilbao back in 2018.The final promises to be a showdown of titans with Bordeaux Bègles defending their title with a flawless record this season, featuring a formidable backline including France's star winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey. "We know it’s going to be a serious challenge, we are fully respectful of the Bordeaux team and what they’ve achieved in recent times,” remarked Cullen. “You want to be able to test yourselves against the best."
As for the team line-ups, Leinster is making strategic adjustments: James Lowe will sit out this crucial match while Tadhg Furlong makes a comeback. Bordeaux Bègles has made only one change from their previous lineup, with Sadie starting this time around.
Amidst the strategic plays and off-field controversies, the stage is set for a riveting clash in Bilbao, underscoring the dynamic and evolving landscape of international rugby competitions.
