Lion's and Tahs

The Lion's had some well worked moves I thought. More creativity in o e half of that game than the entire Bok season last year. 
A bunch of mistakes and defensive lapses but still won by a comfortable margin. Similar to last season. One does however wonder what is going to happen against teams with better structures.
Very happy that Akkerman started without Marx and Faf. They played poorly last week and it's nice to know that he's not afraid of benching his bigger names when they disappoint. 
Again, an entertaining game from the lads in red.  

Good win for the Lions but in truth that was very poor defence from both teams.

 Lions looking good but would love to see Redlinghuys and Combrink back. Redlinghuys is a key player for the Lions.The Lions look once more to be the best coached SA side early into the season. However the Cheetahs are going strong.Bulle are  disappointing but Bulle tend to start slow.Haven't seen rooitwits ha pless guppies so cant really comment.

 Glad to see the Lions bringing SA fans some joy !

I am not altogether sure about the strength of the Aussie teams Reptedly the Waratahs, Reds and Brumbies are the strongest Aussie sides.   However all three of them lost the past weekend - two against SA Teams and the Reds against the Force.  
Insofar as the Waratahs are concerned they struggled against the Force - while in the case of the Brumbies they lost against the Crusaders.   So the end of ythis story is the Aussie sides may be even worse than the SA Franchises, 
WE will have to wait see how the SA DFrancjses fare when they meet the NZ sides.
Bow back to the Lions   The team deserve victory and one can only wish them well.    However, there are some danger signs and my main concern is Jantjies.   He has yet to learn not to pass balls to players in an equal position or even worse one than he is in.   How many of his passes did not go to hand because they were inaccurate?
We all wants ti see a ball in hand game - but that requires a greater degree of accuracy than what was on display yesterday.          

 Mike Jantjies did however pull off a few blind offloads to players running onto him. The one to Whitely that resulted in a line break and ultimately a try comes to mind. 
He also managed to put players into space ample times last year...and the year before. Something our other contenders like Pollard and Lambie don't seem to be able to do nearly as well.
I'm in full agreement that he does throw some speculative balls at times that result in uneccesary pressure and turnovers. But at the same time agressive tactics are always gonna result in a few missed shots. As long as the amount of shots landed is greater than those missed you'll normally be on the winning side. 
The Lion's seem to intentionally do their best to gas the opposition. So this also plays into why Jantjies seems to be reckless. A game plan like this puts mad pressure on the 10 because he constantly has to spread the ball to right player and do so time after time while on the move with defenders rushing at him. It creates mistakes sure, but it also creates gaps. The proof is in the pudding.
The Lion's had a lot of tries scored against them last year, but they scored more tries than anybody else. 
To my mind it's a trade off. To put it in perspective Mike, they scored more tries in total than any other Kiwi team and in games against Kiwi teams they out scored them too. And we are not talking about shyte Kiwi teams. We are talking about the best club sides in the world. Compare that to any other side in SA and it seems that we are knit picking our best team and our most successful 10. Doesn't make sense to me.
The trade off is working for them and Jatlntjies ain't perfect but he has and is doing a stellar job the Lion's. I don't know if we have another 10 that can do that. Pollard and Lambie surely can't. 

Plum if the much more talented Quaalude has been unable to make his game work at test level....his pupil Jantjies wont either. Jantjies started looking good once the game was in the bag. He made 9 runs for 10 metres and lost the ball twice. Inherently what he is trying to do has a high degree of difficulty.....making last micro second decisions and hoping his team mates get it. Get a defence with line speed and it all implodes.

 As  you could have seen I am not happy with Jantjies - his inaccurate passes lead to tries against the Lions and that remains a problem.  
Where I do have another problem is with Pollard.   He initially showed real class with nerves of steel - something nobody can accuse Jantjies of.   However, after his initial tests long before his injury - he did not fulfil initial promise and was to my mind pedestrian.  
In the two games after his injury he was payhetic and even though he himself said he has to improve on his first outing there was o proof of improvement in the game against the Cheetahs.
By the way I think Goosen might make a quiet return to rugby in about three months and wonder which franchise he would join.    I have a suspicion it may be he Stormers - but am very impressed with Du Plessis.
Wonder whether Goosen opted out of the Metro contract to get back to SA and come into contention for international selection?

I am very worried about your other pick Pollard - he is beginning to look like a duplicate of Fat Fransie or Morne.   He is as inaccurate in kicking as the two favourites of yours and the rest of his backline play is atrocious.
Goosen will have to play in SA and earn his place through hard work - not being selected based on prejudice or anything else.   He still is a better flyhalf than most o f the other potential candidates - at least he scores tries and make tries - but let me not deliberate on that - since you regard try scoring as a sin against rugby.

Take a look at Goosen under the high ball the yellow streak is obvious....total lack of commitment.

 Du Plessis is a great prospect. Luckily the Stormers have seemed to adopt a more aggressive game so he shouldn't be wasted there. Problem is that him and Dups will be sharing game time.
