I could not help posting this thread when I read an article about Marx on news24:-

"Lions coach Johan Ackermann believes hooker Malcolm Marx could become the next Bismarck du Plessis.

The 20-year-old Marx was the surprise selection when Ackermann named his Super Rugby team for Friday's clash against the Hurricanes in Johannesburg.

Marx was named in the Lions starting team for the clash, with Armand van der Merwe on the bench.

Marx represented the Baby Boks at the Junior World Championship last year but sustained a knee injury in their second match which ruled him out for six weeks. He then returned to play He is very young, but he could definitely become the next Bismarck," Ackermann told Netwerk24. "He worked really hard at his fitness in pre-season. He's moveable, but still as strong as an ox."

Standing 1.88m tall and weighing in at 119kg, compared to Du Plessis's 1.89m and 112kg, Marx draws some comparisons with the Springbok hooker

Ackermann said Marx, a former loose forward, will be vital to their cause this year.

"Malcolm's biggest asset is his versatility. He's improved his scrummaging and lineouts, but we're very excited about his ability to, like Bismarck, attack the breakdowns. Our game plan depends on quick ball possession and an extra fetcher is vital."for the Golden Lions in the Under-19 domestic competition."

I am posting this article to give Mozart ample opportunity to run this youngster down in his normal manner - when it comes to any younger players Mozart's prejudice is a definite.

I think Groucho Marx had the best response to this piffle:
From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.

Sure - but insofar as rugby is concerned your faking is not very successful.  I would imagine you will not watch the game on Friday night and then deliver a damning report on this guy.

Mike you are breaking our agreement. Are you bored or do you long to be humiliated again?

Big things are expected of this lad. He left the Junior WC early which is a pity. He looks a real hard nut.

Hell 119kg, he was about 113kg when playing for the Baby Boks.......similar build to Bismark

I am sorry if you feel I am breaking our agreement - fact is if I do take a stand against your views - I am doing it as mildly as possible,  not in any way humiliating anyone.
Talking about "faking"  I was just using Groucho Marx's term to play the fool with you, taking into account your constant dislike of younger players.   Over the last three years you have accepted only two younger players - Etzebeth and Pollard - the rest has been constantly criticized by you.
But lets stay away from personal insults - I have never used them since our agreement.

I think that extra 7 kgs of muscle probably makes him stronger than Bismarck.
He definitely is speedier than Bismarck.   The Lions are lucky they have also Akker van der Merwe who has excessive speed - and he is on their bench.

Looks very strong but I doubt if he's stronger than Bissie...who is an absolute freak in strength but as the years go by the young lion will oust the existing king of the pride.

Looks a an exciting player with a lot of prospects...I think the Lions will do very well this year...got some exciting new boys and I believe Ackermann is doing something very right...the Lions seem very motivated and have got some unfinished business to prove.

Now this guy seems like what we have been waiting for. Lucky Lions. Lions have the two bes tup and coming hookers. We are suffering with wee scurra the midget!
The very wee Hurricanes will be wetting themselves thinking about scrum time!Show the twits a worms eye view of Ellis Park!!

Bismarck? I think he was outplayed most of the year by Strauss, especially in the RC. Looked tired to me.
Bismarck has a higher performance ceiling than Strauss but Strauss has a much higher floor, far more consistent and technically superior in the scrum and lineout. He'd be my pick right now to start for the Boks in WC. Bismarck off the bench for the last 20/25 minutes. Same with Coetzee - his greatest impact on the park is when there are tired legs out there and the piss has been taken out of the other side by the bigger blokes. His workrate and speed is much more of a factor at that time in both offense and defense.

Maaik, you are stirring again like usual. Keep it up BTW. Moz like his youngsters to hit the deck running in tests. Me too. Lets give the lad a chance of playing an actual game before starting to sing his praises.
PS, I know you like nothing more than to needle Moz and Vlagman (Ceradyne), so don't pretend you have given up on that. I appreciate the milder attitude though. Keep it up!

We do need a new hooker coming through.....our two class acts have hit 30. Marx looks a great prospect and this S15 should tell us all.
Cooper looked promising for the Sharks but had a less than impressive season last year. He needs to step up.

He looks like a bigger and stronger version of Bismaark. A total brute. He is like 120kg which is heavy for a hooker, especially a mobile one.

Talking of old players, I was hearing of a 70yr old Prop who is still turning out every week for one of our Junior Clubs, Mozart. He's been playing for 60yrs now and says he's lost a bit of strength but has muscled up a tad to compensate !! I thought of you as soon as I heard about him

Consider this tight five:Du Toit, Marx, MalherbeEtzebeth, Willemse
Way superior to anything the pap abs could field!!
Draad I think guys like you an me are having a good influence on ou maaaikie, Moz and snapster. Rooitwit, warped DUD and DA are more problematci though but we must persevere.

No, not Malherbe......Marcel v/d Merwe is better and bigger.

1. Thomas du Toit 2. Marx 3. Marcel v/d Merwe 4. Willemse 5. Etzebeth 6. Coetzee 7. PSDT 8. Botha

Snapster Malherbe is probably the stronger scrummager and much better outside the scrum but time will tell. This guy Koch looks very promising at tighthead. Kebble and Koch show nice ability to drive the ball up - some pace etc.Arno at 103 kg has a lot to prove.I like the look of young Liebenberg the bulle youngster at 8. We have loosies to burn and we just will need to get the combo right.
Unbelievable forward power if Meyer understands what needs to be done.Where do you play jaque Du Plessis and Steph. Plenty of big mobile locks. plenty of 7s.

Oh what utter rubbish......Marcel is the better scrummager and far better with ball in hand than Malherbe.....no contest at all.

Come tell me after watching Arno Botha this weekend that he still weighs 103kg.

I have Steph at 7 and would have du Plessis on the bench

Malherbe is no where near as good as Marcel Van Der Merwe, his runs are average and he doesn't affect turnovers or scrum that well . Arno Botha is not weak and your obsession with size is ridiculous, your "Beeno power pack" is crap.

You would have to be pretty thick to believe that Arno Botha still weighs the same as he did when he played for the Baby Boks......the guy looks like a body builder these days.

But we are talking Beenkop here and he is as thick as pig pooh

Arno more than a year ago

The Malherbe- Van der Merwe debate is a long one - but the fact is that until his injury last year Malherbe had a much better performance record than Van der Merwe.   His work rate outside of scrumming was much better than Van der Merwe's and there is no way that anybody can prove conclusively that Van der Merwe is a better scrummer.
Both aare very good players - and both can have a good future - but fact is they will have to compete for the same position - which is a healthy situation to be in.

You might be friends with the Malherbe family Mike but there's no denying that he isn't anything special. Coenie showed a lot more before his injury than Malherbe has ever shown, Marcel is improving where Malherbe has stagnated.

Bullshit v/d Merwe is better than Malherbe in the scrums and is far better with ball in hand.

I rate Malherbe, but Marcel is far better

Neither Van der Merwe nor Malherbe has proven a thing yet. Both show promise,  but we will have to wait for it.

Totally agreed Draad. Of the two van der Merwe has more potential, but can he scrum, I still recall him being folded by the Lions loosehead.
The same really is true about Arno Botha. He looked good two years ago, and I certainly supported his Bok chance. But where is he now. Does he have Matfield's ability to come back after two years of inactivity? I hope so.
