Former Springboks head coach Nick Mallett has confidently addressed concerns regarding Tony Brown's commitment to the Springboks as he prepares for a future role with the All Blacks. Brown, currently the attack coach for the Springboks, is set to join New Zealand's coaching staff in 2028 after the Rugby World Cup 2027 concludes in Australia.
Regarded as one of the elite attack coaches globally, Brown's upcoming transition has stirred debates, given the intense rivalry between South Africa and New Zealand. However, Mallett, speaking on the Talking Boks podcast, reassured fans of Brown's dedication. "Well, Tony Brown’s a fantastic coach. He really is a wonderful coach," Mallett reflected, emphasizing Brown's previous decisions to decline offers from the All Blacks, signaling his current commitment to the Springboks.
"He’s committed to the Springboks until 2027. And I can tell you, having coached overseas, you give 100% to the team that you’re coaching,"
Mallett, who has experienced coaching both his native and foreign teams, including a stint with Italy, understands the professional demands and loyalties required in such roles. He detailed the challenges and emotional complexities of coaching against one's own nation, underlining the professional integrity that he expects from Brown.
The timing of Brown's switch does add an intriguing layer, as the Springboks and All Blacks could potentially clash in the 2027 World Cup quarter-finals. Mallett, however, sees no issue with Brown's ability to fully support the Springboks should this scenario unfold. "If we go into a quarter-final in that World Cup in 2027, there won’t be one iota of his rugby knowledge that he’s not passing onto the Boks," Mallett assured, highlighting the utmost professionalism expected from sportsmen at this level.
As Brown's tenure with the Springboks will inevitably conclude after the World Cup, Mallett acknowledged the benefits of Brown's early announcement, allowing the team to prepare for a transition in the coaching staff. "We know he’s not going to be signed up post-2027, the World Cup. And we know we’re going to be looking for another attack coach at that point. But I guarantee you, Tony Brown will give 100% to the Springboks throughout the time that he coaches them," Mallett concluded, reinforcing the sentiment of mutual respect and learning between Brown and the Springboks' setup.
With this clarity and forward-looking perspective, both Brown and the Springboks are set to focus on their immediate goals, aiming to leave a lasting impact on the world stage before this chapter of their journey together closes.
