‘Matfield playing like old man’

Former Springbok prop Ollie le Roux says Victor Matfield is no longer able to influence proceedings at Vodacom Super Rugby level. BRENTON CHELIN reports.

Matfield's glittering career is in danger of ending with a whimper. The 2015 World Cup in England, much like the one four years prior, has been earmarked for the famed lock's swansong.

But where there were question marks about whether Matfield still had more to offer following the event in New Zealand, the current crop of questions are far more ominous.

Le Roux, speaking to SARugbymag.co.za, is the latest to ask whether father time has finally caught up to the 37-year-old Bulls lock, and whether he can still contribute at Super Rugby level, let alone with the Boks later this year.

‘Victor Matfield is playing like an old man at the moment,' said Le Roux. 'He’s lost the presence he once had and even his lineout work is suffering.

'He just doesn’t have it in him to provide a physical presence around the park anymore, and the longer he goes on, the more his legacy will be tainted.

‘He’s got a massive battle this weekend against Pieter-Steph du Toit, who is younger and hungrier. Matfield will always be able to compete at the lineouts, but matches aren't won there, they're won in open play. Will he be able to match Du Toit in the other aspects of play? I'm not so sure.'

Commenting on the past weekend's matches, Le Roux said he was impressed with the Sharks' bonus-point win against the Lions in difficult conditions. After failing to impose themselves against the Cheetahs in the first round, the Sharks rebounded with a dominant forward display in Durban.

‘Bismarck du Plessis made a massive difference, where he once again showed his class. The Sharks looked a much better unit with him in the front row. The Lions simply weren’t able to handle the weight of their pack.‘

‘I was also impressed by the young guns – Dale Chadwick and Thomas du Toit. The injury to Beast Mtawarira might be a blessing in disguise, allowing those two the time to develop at Super Rugby level.'

The two sides will meet on Saturday at Loftus, with the Bulls still seeking their first victory of the season. Having already lost to the Stormers at home this season, the match takes on an added dimension in the race for the South African conference title.

'The Bulls are seriously underperforming when you look at the talent they have in their ranks,' said Le Roux. 'Yes, they only lost narrowly against the Hurricanes, but the good teams find a way to win by one or two points.'

'Despite having so many experienced players, they seem to be lacking leadership on the field. Someone like Duane Vermeulen leads by example for the Stormers, but I don't see anyone doing the same for the Bulls.'

Matfield remains a physical liability and Ollie is right in his comments about him.   He is seriously defective in everything he does on the field of play.
I think that Matfield will find a reason not to play this weekend against Du Toit - being afraid to be shown up by the youngster.   Even if he does play - he would never call a line out for the ball to come to him - which in his case is an increasing tendency on his part in any event.

Does Matfield know this?

How about Meyer?

As far as I have it, this elderly, 5 years past his prime, player is earmarked to take the Captaincy from Jean later this year.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa!!!!!

This is of course totally precictable. It's possible Matfield suddenly fell off the cliff in the last three months. But it's far more likely he knows it's a long year and is pacing himself. These older players take the RWC very seriously. And isn't it also likely, fat Ollie just doesn't like Victor.

It's amazing, the Sharks lose at home to the hopeless Cheetahs, but then beat the equally hopeless Lions and all their players are Bok material.

But it's impressive, no Union has a more committed press. The trouble is it has given us flops like Lambie, Mvovo, Reinach......who HM now seems to have firmly in his Bok plans. All three will fail in this RWC year....let's hope it's sooner not later.

Matfield pacing himself......bwhaahhaaa......its been 12 months of pacing then?

Imagine insulting the rest of your team mates by pacing yourself in a game of rugby?

Fact is Ollie is spot on regarding Matfield, but Meyer is too stupid to realise this, much like Ludeke is and he wonders why his side keeps losing when they have physical liabilities like Matfield and Kruger on board.

Matfield is useless these days

You must be kidding with your following comments:-
"It's possible Matfield suddenly fell off the cliff in the last three months. But it's far more likely he knows it's a long year and is pacing himself. These older players take the RWC very seriously."
The pacing himself comments is seriously funny - how do one pace yourself in playing rugby without it being the detriment to the team you play for?   Pacing surely mean that you rest a player regularly - not playing him and finding out he flops in matches.   A player that has been poor in and since the EOYT is not going to turn around suddenly during the WC and become competitive.
"But it's impressive, no Union has a more committed press. The trouble is it has given us flops like Lambie, Mvovo, Reinach......who HM now seems to have firmly in his Bok plans. All three will fail in this RWC year....let's hope it's sooner not later."
None of the three players flopped in the games they played in this year and certainly was better than some of your favourites you yearn after.   The flops you listed are just based on prejudice against the relevant players - not on actual rugby performances.   You will certainly show rugby knowledge the day you make a realistic performance assessment of players - at this stage your comments are basically jokes in bad taste.
Finally - there is no way that Matfield is not below par - he is physically not competitive anymore.

It's more likely that Stefanie will get hurt again than Matfield has lost his mojo....ergo Matfield is still far more likely to be wearing 5 at the RWC.

Matfield got dominated by the Hurricanes at lineout time. Remember quite clearly him calling a lineout for himself then getting out jumped and conceding a lineout steal.
Seeing Thor lead by example for the Stormers is convincing me that maybe he's a viable option for the Boks.

Matfield has lost his mojo in 2011 already - he had shown none since his return to the Bulls and the Springbok team.  Shezza is right - Matfield got dominated too easily and for that reason calls less and less line-outs to himself.    He makes some process tackles - but is useless in Tight 5 play.
Wishing an injury on Du Toit?   But then there is also Ruan Botha who shows what a lock should be able to do - and Matfield is incapable of doing - in his recent games.   He is streets ahead of Matfield as well.
If Matfield is a lock in the RWC - we are going to lose out badly - having to play a 15 man game with 14 men and a dummy - Ouma Matfield since Oupa Matfield will be stronger.

Oh there is no doubt Matfield will be wearing the 5 jersey at the RWC, we have Meyer as our coach after all.

How much longer will we have to suffer with Meyer as coach and Matfield as his up-the-ass pally-pally selection?   I suppose the pain will be there until we go out of the WC in the quarter-final.   Then he may resign or be fired and we will never hear of Matfield playing rugby again.

Yeah my bet is an early exit from the WC thanks to Meyers pathetic selections and then he will do a runner.

Imagine having Etzebeth, PSDT and Willemse at your disposal and actually selecting Matfield.....beyond rugby comprehension.......hell that's excluding the likes of Lood, Jacques du Plessis etc

Mozart, whilst I'm agreement with a few of your experienced selection (Du Preez, for example) I believe that RWC 15 is a bridge too far for Matfield.
Lock isn't a position we're struggling for depth in and like Saffex said we have the likes of Etzebeth, PSDT, Willemse, Lood, Du Plessis, Ruan Botha, Lewies, Flip, and so on and on. In fact it's probably the area I least worry about.
Whilst, I think Matfield was okay last year providing some good work and no doubt teaching Etzebeth and Lood a few tricks, I think it's probably time for him to call it a day. A legend of the game.

You must remember who you are dealing with here -  Mozart routinely finds fault with younger players and creates the impression that the prime age of rugby players are over 30.
When Bakkies Botha played in the Scottish test in 2013 - Mozart was on site within an hour after the final whistle of the match with a praise song on him - that despite an under-par performance by Botha.
In the case of Matfield he refuses to admit that Matfield in some games made serious mistakes and found excuses for those mistakes.   He accuses other players he does not like of making "process tackles"  - but in the case of the "process tackles" (mostly of substandard quality) by Matfield, he praised Matfield for the number of tackles he made.
Those are two examples of Mozart's constant campaign in favour of older players - mostly based on reputation of players without any regard to present performances of his favoured players.
Since Mozart has one norm for his favourite reputation players over 30 years of age - and a completely different norm for younger players he dislikes - it is advisable to just stick to fact insofar as player performances are concerned and not be misled by his prejudiced assessments.

About 7 months ago there was a newspaper article about Matfield and the lunacy of selecting him posted on this site.   Instead of giving evidence as to Matfield's merit performances  to countermand the report - you went on the rampage against the writer of the report being an ignoramus not knowing anything about rugby.
This time around with the Ollie's comments the following is a key remark you made:-
"And isn't it also likely, fat Ollie just doesn't like Victor."
Why FAT Ollie and why makes a statement that nobody on the site could confirm?
In later comments the following:-
"It's more likely that Stefanie will get hurt again than Matfield has lost his mojo"

Again a crap statement especially since in the EOYT and the first two Super 15 games it was clear that Matfield has lost his mojo.   And why Stephanie?   The guy's name is not Stephanie - same as Matfield's name is not Victoria.   Although his teammates sometimes call Matfield Victoria - a name he hates with a vengeance - we have not gone that route yet.   In future as long as you keep calling Du Toit Stephanie - so long we will call Matfield  Ouma Victoria.
I would rather not comment on the Du Toit injury story - that looks too much like a wish on your part for the guy to be injured.
