Brüssow to improve discipline 2013-04-17 07:46             Heinrich Brüssow (Gallo Images) Related Links

  • Cape Town - The Springbok management feels Cheetahs flanker Heinrich Brüssow’s penalty count is too high.

According to the SA Rugby Magazine’s website, this was the reason given to Brüssow after he was not included in the recent Springbok training squad.

However, the 26-year-old is not completely out of the reckoning and said he will work as hard as he possibly can to add to his 20 Test caps - the last of which came against Australia at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

“The Springbok management has told me what I need to work on, they said my penalty count stands against me,” said Brüssow.

“I’ll just have to work harder to prove that I deserve to be in the Springbok squad. It’s frustrating sometimes because penalties will happen as referees are so strict at the breakdowns. But I’ll do whatever it takes to earn my spot. I’m even working hard on becoming bigger (in size).”

The rugbystats.com.au website reveals that Brüssow conceded seven penalties in six Super Rugby appearances this season, with three of those coming in the Cheetahs' recent derby win over the Stormers in Bloemfontein.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Is penalties conceded the main reason for Heinrich Brüssow's omission from the Springbok squad? Or does coach Heyneke Meyer simply prefer bigger players?  Send your thoughts toSport24.

Sharkbok

I am not sure about the penalty count issue.   According to test rugby Brussow gave away 3 penalties in total this year - 2 of which was in the game against the Stormers.   In a corresponding number of games that brussow played - Kolisi gave away a total of 5 penalties

So is this a pretended excuse or just that Meyer does not like the play of Brussow?

Typical crap from Meyer. Would love to hear his justification for the inclusion of Kirchner, Basson, de Jongh, Morne, Vermaak, Cilliers, Juandre Kruger, Franco v/d Merwe, Spies and Kankan......better still would be his justification for excluding le Roux, v/d Heever, JJ, de Allende, Reinach (originally), Kitshoff, Nkanyane, Cooper, de Jager, Labascagne, Elstadt and Daniel

Meyer should bring Brussow in as a super-sub if that's the case. I mean, Brussow's work-rate is pretty convincing given that he's just came back from an injury. I still consider Brussow as one of the best open-side flanker in South Africa; he's a man on a mission. He probably deserve a spot in the squad more than the likes of Spies, Morne, Kirchner, just to name a few. I think we'll be better equipped with Brussow in the mix at the Breakdown.

Ja, stupid excuse! I rate him, and really, six penalties in seven games for a fetcher. Not the end of the world!

I am pretty sure that everyone here would have Bizmark as the Boks first choice hooker, even though he gave away exactly the same number of penalties in last year Super Rugby tournament, as turn overs he made. 30 odd if memory serves me correctly. Given that he played +- 17 games, that is nearly two penalties a game.

Remind us Mr Meyer, why don't you want Brussouw?

BlueBok Meyer prefers bigger players over say the likes of Brussow, that's why the text above quotes him say 'I’m even working hard on becoming bigger (in size).” Bulking up to meet Meyer standard of physic my come at the expense of his agility and probably his work-rate too. IMO, if he's effective in what he is doing, he should change himself to accommodate Meyer's style of play. Meyer's excuse is frustrating for sure

ntanga, I agree with you, his size is probably the reason, but then why does Meyer spin us this bullshit about turnovers? It won't surprise me if we lose Brussouw to some rich overseas contract...although, he strikes me as the kind of player that will remain loyal to the Cheetahs, regardless of what other unioins/countries offer.
