Ex Supersport

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has enough superstition in him to be nervous about jinxing a player by being too lavish with his expectation, but he admits that there is a lot of excitement in his anticipation of Morne Steyn’s performance against Argentina on Saturday.

The Bok flyhalf was pilloried by the critics after the England series, particularly for his performance in the last drawn test match in Port Elizabeth, where the goalkicking failures he suffered earlier on in the series appeared to start impacting on his allround confidence. Meyer didn’t pull any punches at the post-match press conference at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, and left little doubt that he felt Steyn needed to pull up his socks if he wanted to continue playing for the Boks.

However, in spite of the speculation that Steyn might be dropped, the Bok coach opted to continue with Steyn for the two test matches against the Pumas that will kick off the South African campaign in The Castle Rugby Championship.

“I don’t want to put a spell on the player but I must say I am really looking forward to seeing Morne play on Saturday, I just have a strong feeling that he is going to do really well,” said Meyer.

People mustn’t forget that Morne had played a lot of rugby before the series against England, and sometimes non-stop rugby can just get on top of you. He is one of the players who has been involved for almost 80 minutes of every game for nearly three years. Sooner or later that was going to catch up with him and in June he had played non-stop Super Rugby for several weeks without a break. (I have noted this more than once but it all falls on deaf ears  - the oaks think these are all excuses but again they confound an excuse with a fact!)

But because the Bulls got knocked out of the competition early, Morne has had a break now and I sense that it has helped him. He seems refreshed and I think we will see the difference on Saturday. He has gone well in training this week.”

Meyer says that Steyn knows where he stands and what he has to do if he wants to continue being the Bok pivot.

“Morne understands that when you play flyhalf for the Boks there is expectation and there is pressure, and he knows that when you don’t perform to the expectation there is criticism. I don’t know any player who can take criticism better than Morne can. But I think the criticism will motivate him to produce good rugby going forward and I have a lot of confidence in him.”

The man who stands alongside Steyn in the all-important decision making axis at No 10/No 12, namesake Frans Steyn, backs up Meyer’s confidence.

I don’t think Morne has been playing that badly and I think people just need to understand that it is hard to get used to playing in a new team when a lot of really top players have left or retired,” said the centre.

I thought Morne did what he had to do against England, but if he struggled a bit with the Bulls it was because they are a new team that is rebuilding. That is going to take a while, it doesn’t just happen in one year, and I think Morne has done well considering the changes that have happened at the Bulls.

He is a player who has performed well over a long period and everybody knows what he is capable of doing. There is no reason why he can’t return to his best match-winning form

So snapster you will have to wait a little longer until Pollard gets his shot.  Glad to see Meyer working hard to restore Morne. Morne and Goosen are our pivots in the nearer term with Lambie also a consideration although it appears he is being earmarked as a 15. When Morne retires we also have Jantjes.

So we have Meyer and Steyn endorsing Morne but what do they know after all!

As much as I agree with what Meyer is saying and how much I love Morne's kicking ability, he simply has been poor. Not just since the June test, but even before that his performance was slipping.

The problem comes when you try play in under performing players, during big competitions like the Chamionship.

For the Boks to have any chance of winning we need to win every single game we play against Aus and the Argies. I just don't believe that Morne and Jantjies are the best flyhalves in SA, in terms of kicking, defending or running at this point.

But, I will let Meyer get on with it. I just hope we are in for a token 3rd place.

very nice diplomatic words......its up to morne to restore the public faith in him. so i hope for his sake he can produce the goods. witht he amount of chances he has had this year he needs to step up. he is not the flyhalf to carry us to RWC glory so for my own view i would like meyer and co the blood goosen as soon as he is ready to play again. jantjies is to inconsistent to be a international level player sorry to say. he will never cut it at the top level by blowing hot and more than normal cold.

players like morne, hougaard and zane need to really put there hands up this weekend. i do mean really play out of there skins. another sub par performance and people will be asking for them to be axed. against the newbees the pumas they really need to shine

Meyer says that "Steyn knows where he stands and what he has to do if he wants to continue being the Bok pivot".

- Lets just hope he does not stand in the Car Park like in the 3rd test against the English.

Morne stood so deep in the 3rd test that Francois Hougaars passes could barely reach him.

Although I must admit in the first 2 tests he did take the ball more flat and was even running onto the Ball.

hahahaha sharkbok

mate he did not even stand in the car park. he was on the road at the back of the stadium :)....cant help but laugh when i see him on attack. i know of school kids that take it flatter than him. when he takes the ball he jogs he is at about 40% speed.

but ja i dont know tough tournament for him i think. another weak couple of weeks and i am sure meyer will have to replace him. one cant have this amount of chances and not perform

If Morne Steyn is the best fly-half that South Africa can select man will we havet problems when facing real competion.

He is overated and a passanger at best....just as Flip Flop v d Merwe is.

ragtad there is nothing wrong with that Argies pack of forwards.

How unfortunate that ragtad and cohorts are hoping Morne will fail simply to justify their unbalanced views.

the oz pack will not b eas difficult fo sur eand we sahll see how good these abs are. Fortunately for both oz and the abs they will not this year face the full might of the Bok forwards.

yes beeno i hope mom made you a nice breakfest..........hope your weekend warrior finger got some due rest. how was your uno card game with no cups coetzee over the weekend....did he let you touch his star wars lego set ?????

the boks faced a pumas team findiing there feet so singing certain players praises is like saying that you have some certain level of rugby knowledge and competence....which we all know is hogwash in any case

i dont want morne to fail at all....i am just realistic and the rest on this forum understands there is a bigger picture here and morne does not fit in that picture. he played well against a team to be fair that left a lot of points on the pitch on saterday.

the whole backline was rubbish on saterday apart form a few moments of brillance but if you had to compare the ab wallies game to the boks game then there was a big difference in intensity and pace. we needed to win and we did win...so the real test as radtad as stated will be the AB and wallies game. that will be the acid test. the forwards of the ab's are no pushovers and the have the real edge in the backline seeing that they play more to them.

we cant oversell the performance of the boks. its was a win fine fair enough but we need to improve far more to compete

There is nothing wrong with them at all other than they are slower than the Ab's and Ozzies, they are big and failed to put enough pressure to give you full confidence that Morne will enjoy the same success against them. But for all of that they held themselves well against our boys.

But yes you are right the Ab's and Wallabies will not face the full might of the Boks but should we not have the depth to fill those gaps? afterall you go on all the time that we are the mighty Boks - really???? Dont we have the biggest player depth against OZ and NZ? Well listening to you we are invincible.......

Meyers test dont start until we play the youy know who and surely even your pea brain knows that bhwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The only time our backline looked good was when Pienaar came on and Hougaard ran the attacking line Morne should have. Else we looked average at best.

spot on gareth in my view below average even for our standards. pienaar gave a lot of direction to a out of direction backline. i dont know what the tactics was on saterday even if there was any tactics. they looked flat so lets hope they pick it up next weekend.

Talking of highlights.. I was so bored during Aus vs AB's I cleaned the house and took a nap during SA vs Argies. The Currie Cup games were far better, Sharks look dan-grrr-rus
