i read an interesting post from another blogger who is an avid sailor and a fireman who is very clued up with wind and air currents and this is what he had to say about forsythh barr where the All Blacks and Boks played last saturday,,,,

Otagoz says,,,,
"Just a though about the goal kicking in the stadium!
There doesn't seem to be the same problem when the ITM & S15 games are played = fewer spectators.
Perhaps a full house is a problem!
The Leithside seats greatly outnumber the Ravensbourne side seats. In cold conditions the considerable difference in body heat rising from each stand on either side of a relative void (the playing field) should cause marked localized air currents (but not wind)!
These effects would I suspect be prevalent high up under the roof but not so much on the ground.
The Springbok kicks (a number of which were long range) required a higher trajectory and this was where the shots inexplicably started to veer off course.
Cruden's shots tended to be mainly low trajectory so fewer problems.
If this is (as I think) a factor it will be always be a very difficult place to goal kick, as most practices will be done in the stadium when it is empty and the ambient outside temperature and the spectators body temperature will be a continual variable!!!
Perhaps, thanks to the gods of Rugby, this may be one stadium that will negate the influence of the long range penalty/ conversion kicker!
We can but hope."

goosens kicking performance kind of debunks that theory, as both his kicks were on target, but i do remember johnny wilkinson having a lot of trouble during the RWC at forsythh barr also, they even resorted to slightly underhand tactics, by using a differnt ball to convert tries then was scored with.

wilkinson and moren are two of the greatest goal kickers to ever grace the game and its a bit of a coincdence that both have a very poor record at that particluar stadium.

of course that dosent excuse the rest of mornes game which is down right poor.

Sasu

The commentators also made a comment about the missed kicks but I do not think it always hold water - missed kicks were in fact missed on different sides of the posts - which negates the theory as outlined above - and as you said Goosen's kicks were accurate and the one by Francois Steyn was accurate - but just short.

Problem with Morne Steyn is that he cannot take the pressure - when he missed one kick he does not easily recover - that at least is my interpretation of the situation.    In any event his kicking in the tests thus far was erratic and way below what it should have been - irrespective of where the tests were played.

I am not sure about the science of all this but offer two other points for consideration.

Firstly why were the abs allowed to pracice at the stadium while the Boks practised out of town at some joint in the rain.

Secondly, that first kck of morne's was dissecting the poles but late in the day swerved off dramtically to the right.

Did the abs know about all this and the prevented our kickers a fair amount of time to work out a solution?

Now correct me if I am wrong this did not happen to crude when he kicked. So another possibility arises. were the abs doing a BL stunt on us and tampering with the balls?

None of which of course reflects well on the abs if true. certainly the practice arragements could be indicating that something was being planned again.

Oh the dark deviousness of the abs - is there no boundaries they will not cross!!

Interesting post, I also heard the commentators take in it, but never looked further into it. I don't think it will factor into Meyer's plans for the next game though, and very few Saffers would be interested to hear about it anyway.
