is popular consensus on the forum, I can't see a reason why consistent performers should be ignored or not be  rewarded.

 I read the article and was upset by the following comments:-
"When Heyneke Meyer was asked towards the end of his tenure as Springbok coach why he ignored players from the Emirates Lions in his World Cup selection, he made the point that the Currie Cup was no longer a strong enough competition to use as a gauge for international rugby."
The above comments indicated that Meyer's comments were at best idiotic.   It was not only the CC where the Lions showed they was the top team in SA - it was also clear in the case of Super Rugby.   
However, it confirms one thing - Meyer was not interested in performance, he was only interested in selecting reputation players irrespective of whether they was still capable of performance.   
Lets hope things are better in future and at least some thinking enters the scene.   .  

Things are already worse, if winning is the objective.  

 It cannot possibly be worse than under Meyer.  I don't think it would be possible.   

Time will tell.
