shore, is a quaint, stone bungalow of historic importance. Bailey’s Cottage,
with its thatched roof, relaxed conservatory, and cosy fireplace, is the ideal
holiday accommodation in Cape Town. Overlooking Surfer’s Corner, the cottage grants easy
access to the rock pools and beach below, while the promenade invites you to
take a stroll to the charming towns of Muizenberg and Kalk Bay.The cottage itself consists of three bedrooms, and sleeps
six guests. Full linen and towels are provided, and each room comes complete
with a heater for those colder winter nights. As a heritage building, there is
only one bathroom, with tub facilities, but the living room offers the modern
conveniences of satellite TV and a DVD player. The self-catering kitchen is fully equipped with oven,
fridge, freezer, microwave and dryer, while the six-seater, mahogany dining
table and amazing granite-top bar provide the perfect location for indoor
entertaining. Outside, what South African holiday destination would be complete
without the mandatory braai area from which to enjoy a few drinks, and the
beautiful ocean view. As a historical icon that forms part of the Muizenberg
Historical Mile, Bailey’s Cottage holds a special place in the hearts of many
who dwell in the area. Originally designed as angling cottage for Sir Abraham
“Abe” Bailey, by Sir Herbert Baker of Baker & Massey architects in the
early 1900’s, the building site is believed to be located on what was once a
gun battery. In fact, the fort from the early 1800’s now forms part of the
foundations of the building.In truth, the land has always belonged to the state,
first by the British Army and the Department of Defence, and more recently by
the Department of Public Works. Sir Abe Bailey received permission to build his
cottage in the 1920’s, but sadly, with the outbreak of World War II in 1939,
the ownership of the cottage reverted back to the Royal Navy. During the war,
the military made use of the space as an observation post, and later as
accommodation for Navy officers until as recently as 1999. While Sir Abe Bailey was a prominent figure in his own
right; a politician, mining magnate and legislator, Bailey’s Cottage has also
welcomed famous political figures such as Cecil John Rhodes and Nelson Mandela,
as the seaside retreat is said to have healing qualities. That, however, is up
to you to decide. Guests can look forward to unique warm African
hospitality. Bailey’s Cottage is pleased to make your stay as relaxing
as possible, and, as such, provides a maid service, six days a week from 8am –
5pm, with a turndown service at 4:30pm. We also offer a laundry service, with following day
return. A full concierge service is available for tours to all
tourist destinations, including Table Mountain, township tours, museums trips,
