I wonder if Hawies plans to lure Saffex friend Peter Englov along with him.

  • Cape Town - The Bulls are reportedly eager to lure Maties coach Hawies Fourie to Pretoria.

Fourie has coached Maties since 2016 and has transformed the team into a skilful unit that likes to adopt a ball in hand approach.

Under Fourie’s guidance, Maties reached two consecutive Varsity Cup finals - 2016 and 2017 - before winning the title at their third attempt by thumping Pukke 40-7 in the final last month.

Afrikaans website Netwerk24 reported on Sunday that the Bulls have been in talks with Fourie to possibly join John Mitchell’s coaching team.

Mitchell is the Bulls’ executive of rugby, while he also serves as head coach the union’s Super Rugby team.

The report added that Fourie’s immediate task would be at the Bulls’ junior and SuperSport Rugby Challenge teams.

He is also viewed as a potential successor for Mitchell with the Super Rugby side.

Meanwhile, Maties are eager to retain Fourie’s services, with the University of Stellenbosch reportedly busy preparing a new three-year deal.

Fourie previously coached Boland and Griquas, while he also served as the Cheetahs’ attack and backline coach between 2007 and 2015.

Franco: SA fans have no idea how tough PRO14 is

2019-04-29 18:55SHARE THISFranco Smith (Gallo Images)

It seems Hawies is back in the media spotlight.

Maties coach Hawies Fourie and Kings coach Deon Davids are believed to be on the shortlist for the job.

Cape Town - Cheetahs coach Franco Smith says South African rugby fans have "no idea" how tough the PRO14competition is.

Smith was speaking to Netwerk24 after the Cheetahs ended their 2018/19 PRO14 campaign with a 61-25 win over the Southern Kings in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

It was an impressive ending to a tough season for the Cheetahs - they won only eight of their 21 games and finished second from bottom in Conference A.

But Smith is positive for the team’s future in the competition.

"I think the squad developed well over the past season and now we've got more experienced PRO14 players. I think we’re now used to the competition and I'm excited about the consistency in some of our performances.

"But were judged on results and supporters in South Africa have no idea how tough the competition is. We're at the end (of the season) now but we know exactly what to do going forward."

Smith was emotional after the win over the Kings, as it’s likely to be his final match in charge of the Cheetahs.

He has been linked with the head coaching job of Italy's national side and the Cheetahs have already started looking for a new head coach.

Maties coach Hawies Fourie and Kings coach Deon Davids are believed to be on the shortlist for the job.

This was an old favourite. Saffex moving in some tightknit rugby circles, and always in the know.
