So I am a little bit confused as to what this new rule means but what I can make out is if you kick the ball out from your within your own half, not directly, but allow it to bounce first. Then team that kicked will get the line out.

Not sure how good this rule will be, but expect to see a whole lot of kicks to the corners. Might work in the boks favour as we tend to have really good line outs, mauls and kickers.

As for the rest, I'm not sure how you will defend.

But, if the ball is dotted down,  held up or knocked on, instead of a 5 meter scrum, it will be a goal line drop out

Not sure if rugby needs more laws changed.

Bizarre rule change...I thought they want less kicking?

That could mean fewer up and under kicks, which is perhaps the most dangerous part of rugby.

So instead of up and unders, there will be more grubbers.

If they outlaw jumping to catch an up and under, it will immediately make it safer too.

I agree with you Draad on jumping, but this how players protect themselves from being lined up, so the question is how to do you protect the catcher when you have a 130 KG raging bull charing down on you

So I found a video clip, so you have to kick the ball from your half and it has to land in the opponent 22 and roll out. This means you'll get the throw in.

After some further reading it looks like it will stop defences pushing up and push more players back to cover the touchline and create more space in the midfield.

I think this is to stop the boks 1) their rush defence pushing up and using their wingers to stop the movement.

To stop up and unders

As soon as the jumper touches turf, he can be tackled anyway, as things stand now, not?

This is going to be trialled in the Rugby Championship along with the 20 minute red card replacement.

Not sure about either new law to be honest. As far as the red card change is concerned, I'd much rather teams playing with 15 vs 15 as far as possible but it doesn't address the problem where a red card with more than 20 minutes remaining is much more punitive than a red card with a few seconds to go.

As for the 50/22 kicking change, I understand they're trying to create more space in midfield by forcing teams to defend the touchline inside their own 22, but I suspect this is just going to encourage more kicking . . . although at least it should reduce the endless up-and-unders that resulted in the turgid rugby we watched during the Lions series.

"20 minutes remaining is much more punitive than a red card with a few seconds to go."

The red card still results in an automatic disciplinary hearing for the offenders player...much harsher sanctions should be dealt for deliberate dirty play. Technical stuff shouldn't be red in any case .

If jumping for high balls is causing the most dangerous situations in the game, then bring in a RULE(just for you Rooi) that penalises a player jumping to retrieve a kick. IE, at least one foot must be touching the ground when catching a kicked ball. Problem solved.

Sure, a good high ball take is pretty to watch, but it's better to get rid of it than to change a variety of other RULES simply to accommodate it...particularly when it's a highly dangerous aspect of the game.

The changes in the OP on this thread sound ridiculous. It will be impossible to stop a team moving up to halfway, unless you can steal a line-out ball  from them.

I get what Rooi is saying about opening up the midfield but this change is a bridge too far towards that end. It'll change the game too much and increase time spent at set piece drastically. I can easily see ten to fifteen minutes being wasted simply for a side to go from within their 22 to halfway.

A kak idea, as far as I'm concerned.
