Obsessive of the Year award
5. Victor Matfield
When Mark Andrews retired, a huge void was left in the Springbok lineout. A year later, a new rising star surfaced. Victor Matfield will go down as one of the greatest Springboks of all time. For over 10 years, Matfield was a gladiator who ran the Springbok lineout like an army drill sergeant. Known for his meticulous pre-match planning, Matfield poached countless opposition balls in the lineouts. An inspiring leader who led the Bulls to multiple Super Rugby titles, Matfield led by example. His crowning achievement was when he terrorised the England lineout during the 2007 World Cup final to earn him the man of the match award.
Rated 5th best Bok of all time, just recently, enjoy your crow.
Matfied was piss poor in all matches he played in since his return to the team in 2014 and was the cause of more losses than any other players ince he destroyed the Tight 5 of the team. That was proven in the fact that he was party to too many loses of games because of weakness up front.
His main achievement was that he was primarily the reason for Meyer having to go as coach. And as for him being MOM in the WC semi-final - did he not bugger up enough in the 20 minutes he actually was on the field of play? He did and the best thing happening to SA Rugby is his departure from the team - where he should never have been in the first instance after his retirement in 2011.
He was great 10 years ago, utterly useless since his return.....the biggest liability in the Bok side as he proved in the semi
Only and idiot like Moffie would see a positive in 38 year old Vic......much like our coach did......where is Meyer now Moffie, huh?
Moz: Wrong this list was compiled by Alisdair Fraser in 2014 ...more crow.
Matfield's debut for the Boks was in 2000! He dominated for 10 years.....according to your source Alisdair Fraser. That would have taken him to 2010-2011 when he retired! Fraser's comments make no mention of Matfield after his return from retirement!
THose claiming that matfield was at any time a good lock are only trying to get out of a disasterous call and sacve face.
Beeno hlding the oaks who supported matfield to account. No wiggling out of this one oaks!
The top 10 Springboks of all time
The fact that more than 50 players could make this list shows the rich history of how of South African rugby. Springbok greats such as Hennie Muller, Dawie de Villiers, Bennie Osler, Danie Craven, Japie Krige and Jan Ellis should never be forgotten but these top ten players have left an indelible mark in Springbok rugby history.
By Alasdair Fraser - June 6, 2014This is claptrap - players should perform - not being in the team because of their reputation. That is where Meyer ultimately got unstuck - too many players being in the team because of their reputation totally unrelated to their present performances.
NZ players you mention have been good enough from a performance perspective and toi criticize them based on lack of performance would be ridiculous.
You turn around the discussion on the issue of Matfield's present performance totally because you ignore performance as a basis for selection and make criticism of performance deficiency in the case of Matfield into an issue about disrespect of his reputation.
He was a liability in the team since his return to play test rugby - end of story.
Never in the field of rugby conflict have so many opportunities produced so few test successes.
Simply put we never won the RWC because we had to rely on older generation players in almost all cases, even though many were coming back from injury. There was no injection of energy from next generation talent. They weren't good enough. White and PdV enjoyed more talent flow.
You live in dreamland on cloud 9. It was not necessary to bring back the old guard players who were in the main way past their sell-by dates in any event. Of the players you mentioned a few were found wanting - but Meyer also did not give most of the younger players opportunities to gain experience on test level - they were never used regularly in tests.
Your assessment of player performances are seriously flawed and prejudiced - so for you to list players and say they have flopped is a joke. For everyone of the younger players you claimed as being flops - there are an equal number of the older players you punted have been flops.
I will list them for you taking only those who were real flops - not imaginary ones. Of thse only the following did not live up to expectations:-
Taute and Engelbrecht - Fourie and in 2014 and 2015 De VilliersGoosen - Morne SteynArno Botha - Willem AlbertsOosthuizen - Gurthro SteenkampDu Toit - MatfieldMarcel van der Merwe - Jannie du Plessis
The difference was that most of the above players had only one or two tests since 2012 and were not really feature this year on a regular basis - the experienced players were serial flops game after game in tests.
Of the rest of the failures one can only say you are talking crap - and badly so.
Despite your refusal to acknowledge it - Matfield was in 2014-2015 not 10% of the player he used to be. His tackling stats were based on the fact that he regularly loafed around in the backline where he made WEAK tackles. As a forward he was a liability. There was no enemies involved here - they are in your imagination - ex-locks recognized the increased liability as a lock present in Matfield and the "gullible" bok fans is also a figment of your imagination. They recognized something serious was amiss in the Tight 5 of the Springboks and the result thereof was loss of forward domination. The real problem was Matfield.
By the way ask bec and Dave about Matfield's athletic exploits for Northampton? Those athletic abilities you spoke about was also not present since his return to play test rugby in 2014.
but then we find the sick behaviour of a poster that in one month has broken all the records known. His endless cut&paste lies that nobody reads and BS fascist-propaganda from the most unreliable internet sources gives without any doubt the award to:
Beeno1
What poor ou wapred dud doesnt know is that the lineout is only one functions as a lock. wee matfield was nz's favourite player given it reduced outr tight five to a tight 4 and help equalise the siy=tuation although even then our tight 4 had an edge as nz forwards are pretty pap.
Please Dr Mozzzzz dont mention pap wee victor in the same breath as real great like habana and schalk and Jdv.
As to matfield's lineout rpowress its way over hyped. I would like to see hsi test record of steals less losses agaisnt rugby nations in the top 8 in the world. Stats like that would of course show how hopeless overtated his lineout contribution was. For the rest he took lineout kicks well and other than that he was a failed backline wannabee.
I warne dabout all thsi and eyes were opened. Some however tried to wangle out of their judhgmental blunder by pretending matfield was at one stage good but the fatc was he eas never ever any good.
Bluebok what could you be on about!
Take it from Beeno the one who knows.
In all the test Matfield played in since June 2014 he had a spotty record in line out steals - a very bad record to be honest since he lost some key line outs as well. He won four line-outs on opposition throw-in and lost 3. That reputation of line-out prowess was based on his reputation - not on fact as it is at present. That does not at present make him a top line out lock.
This harping back on reputation and then stating that it applies to the present scenario is not realistic and is in fact a joke in bad taste.
Irrespective of your mania in the relevant regard there are very few people who in fact regarded Matfield as worthy of selection to the Springbok squad and that included some leading experts in lock play - not only Edwards that you say for some reason or another dislikes Matfield.
There were a number of reasons why Meyer got fired - but Matfield is very high on that list of reasons - in fact on the top of the list.
No other coach would have included the players like Matfield, Alberts and a number of other hasbeens in the team - Meyer was unique in his sentimentality about the string of hasbeens from the players he used to coach when he was the Bulls coach. He also was the one who insisted on a return to the Bulls strategy of passing the ball back to forwards and play a game plan that was easily read and contained by opposing teams.
Mozart's norm for player evaluation relates top what players produced in 2007 0 not what they produced in 2014 and 2015. Any new players not involved in 2007 - with extremely rare exceptions - especially those who were in opposition to some of his heroes - were condemned outright and found wanting according to him.
In the case of Matfield his flops in games he played for for his Club is ignored and that makes him even funnier,
He spent more time hiding in the backline while guys like BAKKIES did the work required from a lock.
As to him returning to play after retiring did not impress me one bit because he proved to be a disaster as a player and his reputation took a tumble even from his most staunch supporters.
Finally HM and Greybeard got it all wrong and thankfully both are now history in SA Rugby.
Moz time to find another old man to support.
