During the past couple of days there were three SA flyhalfs on playing for teams in Europe, namely -
In the Rugby Championship Cup
* Johan Goosen
* Tim Swiel
In the Rugby Challenge Cup - a lower level series
* Morne Steyn
Statistical Record
Player Evaluation
The key here is to bear in mind that Steyn was in alower level competition than Goosen and Swiel - which obviously had an impact on the performances of the three layers concerned. Another issue that impacted on the performances is -
* the fact that Racing Metro and Stade Francais had home games; while
* Harlequins played Leinster in Dublin as an away game.
Johan Goosen
This game was noy on local TV yet but will be braodcasted later in the week. In this case Chezza wrote that Goosen dominated the game and I am sure the statistical data as indicated above is adequate proof of that domination.
For a flyhalf to carry the ball 5 times making atotal of 102 meters and in the process making three clean line breaks beating 3 defenders in the process gives a clear indication of an extremely good performance. This is further illustrated that two of the Racing Metro tires were scored by their wings and in one case Goosen assited in the scoring of the try.
Definitely a top class performance
Tim Swiel
I saw this game and Swiel had a good game in all aspects of the game - bar kicking at goal, where he was average. He missed two penalty kicks at goal kicking with the wind in teh first half - his five attempts at kicking at goal in the second half was all seuccessful. He did hav a bettr performance than last week and was playing a muxh more clever game.
Morne Steyn
I saw this game as well. It definitely was one of the games which Morne perhaps would rather forgot that he ws involved in. He missed the first three kicks at goal and hehad a nghtmare with inaccurate kicking and especially a chargedown kick that let to a try for NewCastle.
His defence was iffy with a miss tackle ratio of 20% - making 4 out of five tackles and missing one.
He improved later in the game and was even instrumental in scoring of a Stade francais try.
Performance Rating of the Players
1 Johan Goosen - 8/10
2 Tim Swiel - 6,5/10
3 Morne Steyn - 5,5/10
Just a question - Goosen has consistently been the flyhalf for Stade Francais since the November tests - where is S exton? Is he injured?
