In a season described as a marathon by Northampton Saints Director of Rugby Phil Dowson, the team's semi-final victory over Leicester Tigers at Franklin’s Gardens was a testament to their resilience and team spirit. Winning 45-31, the Saints showcased a formidable backline performance that propelled them into the PREM final, potentially setting the stage for a riveting rematch against Bath, depending on the outcomes of other matches.
The match was a spectacular display of skill and teamwork, particularly from the Saints' academy products. Tom Litchfield, a midfield maestro, notched a hat-trick, while fullback George Furbank and winger Tommy Freeman added to the tally, alongside young scrum half Archie McParland, who also crossed the try line. This collective effort underscored a season of strong performances, bouncing back from a less stellar previous year.
"I am obviously delighted, and so is everyone else associated with the Club – and probably a little bit relieved as well,"
Dowson expressed. The victory was not just a win on the scoreboard but a vindication of the team's hard work throughout a grueling 49-week season. The Saints had previously clinched the PREM final two seasons ago in a nail-biter against Bath, which adds a layer of anticipation for the upcoming final.
This season has been more than just about wins and losses for Dowson and his team. It has been about building a camaraderie and a culture of joy and resilience. Reflecting on the season, Dowson shared, "This year has been a huge amount of fun. I can’t remember any season, playing or coaching, where I have laughed more. We have had a lot of fun this year, and we have got another week to try and do that again."
Amidst the celebrations, there's also a tinge of sadness as several players, including George Furbank, will be leaving the team. Furbank, who is set to join Harlequins next season, received special attention during his last home game with a touching video montage celebrating his journey and contributions to the team.
"George has been fantastic,"
Dowson remarked, highlighting the emotional weight of the farewell. "We talked about it and had a video montage of him – how far he has come through the ranks and where he sits culturally within our group."
As the Saints prepare for the final, the focus is not just on lifting the trophy but also on cherishing the moments with teammates who have become like family. A victory next week would not only add another chapter to their storied history but also serve as a fitting farewell to players who have given their all to the club.
