Who do you think Allister Coetzee will name as his Springbok captain?

Please note, this is not who you think should be Bok captain or whether overseas-based players should be considered or who's on form and who's injured . . . just put up the name who you think will be named by Coetzee. That's all.

My bet . . . Francois Louw. Definitely not the player I'd pick (he wouldn't make my bench if it was me) but by all accounts he is emerging as the strong favourite to be named captain.

If Coetzee decides not to consider an overseas-based player as Bok captain then I think he could surprise everyone and name Patrick Lambie.

Who do you think?

Vermeulen. But Louw had  a great match against NZ in the RWC semi. I would have no problem with him starting and captaining the team.

Tough to pick.....I'd go with Beast given the cloud over Vermeulen being available.

Beast would not make m y starting side

Beast..... captain? From what I have seen and read, he has become a bit of a whining crybaby with the refs, when things started going wrong for his side .

Whiteley (if Vermeulen's club does not release him for the June tests)

The captain will be playing in SA, probably Burger playing at 7. It would be a mistake. I would give it to Eben for this year, or Lood...or whoever is a sure start for the best in his position for the next 4 years. De Jongh and Beast will be erroneous too.

I agree basically with three issues raised by him, namely that the captain -
*   should not be playing foreign club rugby;*   should be a certainty insofar as team selection is concerned; and*   should be able to last through to the 2019 WC.
Meyer did not care about actual performance by players - his selection was in the main based on reputation with no regard to performance.    That being the case their was no need for foreign-based players to perform and on that basis to be selected.   However, the idiocy of that approach has been proved and that was the main reason why his contract was not renewed.
It is always a problem to realistically assess the performance of foreign-based players and there are in fact preciously few players that can reasonable be considered for selection.
That being said the chances of Vermeulen and Louw to still meet performance requirements by 2019 are remote.   The same statement applies to Burger and Strauss as well.

So where does it leave us.   There are very few real candidates around.   The players should have natural leadership talent and should be able to be a good PRO as well.   That requirement cut out players like Etzebeth.   If he met the requirements he would have been selected as the Stormers captain.
There are effectively two franchise players to be considered - namely Kriel and Lambie.   However, I think that if his performance allows him to be the long-term captain could be Pollard.   I think for the June test series Lambie is likely to be the captain.

Kriel is not even a Bok yet, and Lambie is not the first choice 10 or 15. Eben is player's representative of the players association...not the same, but no fool either. At least he is our best proven player in his position, proven in tests, right age and obviously respected by his fellow players. More pro's than cons. Best option for the interim.

PS, I punted Duane for captain 4 years ago and the same objections used against Eben now were used back then, yet Duane seems to be the favourite choice now, but for the fact that he's playing in France?

Given Eben is not a leader at the Stormers, it would make more sense to have Malherbe as the Bok captain. He is our best tighthead and clearly has leadership qualities given his co leadership of the Stormers.
Of the youngsters in the side.....or close to the starting side....Malherbe and Coetzee have been given leadership roles.
