It is interesting - the indications were that the players I always claimed was in fact the reason  for the loss was largely correct.   Please note - the best Springbok player was beyond doubt Lood de Jager

These rating are way off.

Schalk and Victor were our most productive forwards. Kirchner was our most productive attacker. Kriel did nothing all game but gift Japan a try. Lood had two bug runs and was anonymous. Pienaar was better than Lambie. Steph was anonymous, being significantly less productive than Victor.

How many more times do I need to give you a bloody nose over this test? You were wrong, are wrong and will always be wrong.

Whenever I post the game here and challenge you to prove yourself you slink away.

AO

Sorry - but dreamworld fairy tales do not go anywhere in proving anything.   Fact is the team was evaluated by more than one institution and members and the fact is that -

*   Kirchner was rated as totally sub-par by all four of the contributors  and very badly so - they were in fact all stating that he was to poor to be considered for further tests and he vanished from the scene after that game - if he was any good why did the latter happen?

*    Schalk knocked on four balls and made no headway in carries - he was in fact non-productive and as a very popular player in the general public manage to get 5 in the survey - but did he really deserve it?

*    Matfield was a joke and he could not get a 5 to save his life.   He was rated very poorly by both the public in general and the Rapport newspaper.  There was NO indication that he deserved a higher rating than he actually got since on the day he was useless,

Look - fact is that Matfield did his normal after his return to test Rugby - he destroyed the Springbok Tight 5 in that match.

Your rating of Pienaar is laughable at best.

Jannie- absolutely useless.

He is just a defensive liability. He blocks his own players from making tackles
Kirchner- worse than uselessKolbe or playing Jessie Kriel would be a much better option.
Beast- one run and he was done

Jessie Kriel- I am doubting if he has the experience to play at outside centre in the world cup. Both he and Mvovo were no where on defence.
Their was so much space on the left hand side a hedgehog could have scored.
Jean Devilliers- Is he fit, or just past it?
Lambie - at one stage I was thinking Morne Steyn should be on the pitch.
Ruan Pienaar- He is rarely seen at the base of rucks these days. He seems to be playing a in different game to the rest of the team.
Stephanie Dutoit -was slower than Alberts. Not sure if he is fit,.or even an option as a loose forward.
Once again the retention at the ruck was poor which has been a hallmark of Meyers worst games. It would have been better to have Brussouw on the bench as Stephanie was off the pace
Coenie - a charity service worker giving away penaltiesHe cant scrum so he not is a prop. He did not show any ball carries of significance.
Mvovo- Does he have a defensive game? The left hand side was a wide country garden to exposed at will.
Bismaark had one or two runs otherwise was a ghost.

Not far from what I wrote about that test.   Extremely useless lot - but I added Matfield as one of the useless players that day.

I'm not interested in what our rugby public think. Their track record has been abysmal to say the least. Perpetually wrong, exceedingly slow to catch on.

Kirchner

  1. Pass: 5
  2. Run: 9
  3. Metres: 81
  4. Defenders Beaten: 3
  5. Clean Breaks: 1
  6. Offloads: 2
  7. Tackles: 2/0
Victor
  1. Pass: 6
  2. Run: 8
  3. Metres: 17
  4. Defenders Beaten: 0
  5. Clean Breaks: 1
  6. Offloads: 2
  7. Tackles: 10/0
Steph
  1. Pass: 0
  2. Run: 7
  3. Metres: 10
  4. Defenders Beaten: 2
  5. Clean Breaks: 0
  6. Offloads: 0
  7. Tackles: 4/0
Schalk
  1. Pass: 15
  2. Run: 22
  3. Metres: 37
  4. Defenders Beaten: 2
  5. Clean Breaks: 0
  6. Offloads: 4
  7. Tackles: 10/1
Kriel
  1. Pass: 1
  2. Run: 6
  3. Metres: 17
  4. Defenders Beaten: 3
  5. Clean Breaks: 0
  6. Offloads: 0
  7. Tackles: 4/1
Victor and Schalk were our best defenders. Jean had a poor game. Kriel had a poor game. Our wings struggled to really get into the game. Our most dynamic players on attack were Schalk, Victor and Kirchner. It was a tactical failure though , allowing the Japanese to play a game they play exceptionally well. Long before Jones, they've always had a culture for enterprising attacking rugby.
Mike, you persistently point out names from a team sheet. Why? Because of their age. Our best performers were mostly the names you pick out. You make a complete shambles of assessing this game each and every time you cover it. You originally stated it was lost through aimless kicking. You incorrectly assessed the role of Schalk or the shape of the game. You keep superimposing your flawed agenda and you keep failing. More recently you tried to teach the Kiwis here why Carter and McCaw were a liability when winning this World Cup.
Give it up. I know you want a nice tan for Summer, but your rear end is on the verge of third degree burns.

That is exactly why your kind of evaluation is meaningless and totally biased.   You kept on saying Matfield was better than De Jager - but would name the stats of Matfield and not those of De Jager.   Some people would call that dishonesty.

As to line-outs - who called the line-outs?  Obviously Matfield - but was there any driving mauls in that game?   If there was it did not meet the requirement of Meyer as to his game plan

The one run let to a very good try being scored.   Silliness does not count with me and you are silly in this case.

Augie, talk about burying the old stirrer! No point in asking the public, they will feed back what the commentators said and even get influenced by the cameras focusing on liefies like Stephanie. Kriel only made 4 tackles.....but missed the one that cost the test! How does he not get a zero?

Matfield fouled up and AO claimed he was better than De Jager.

Anyway - I posted this as a warning that Erasmus must not make stupid selections for the WC next year the same way Meyer did.

The point is it was not a disaster....it got the Boks focused for a real shot at the WC, and we came close against the ABs......playing with limited possession and territory, just like NZ did in Pretoria. This whole thing was spun as a huge problem.....just to discredit HM and Matfield. We were careless, we never took Japan seriously....but should still have won. And then Kriel and Coenie made rookie errors and that was all they wrote. A huge distraction.....a political pawn.

A totally wrong summary again.  Sure it was a shock for Meyer and for the team and it soon became clear that the elderly Meyer picked was not going to make the grade.

He had to change the team afterwards to try and correct the campaign - but the damage was done and we ended up forced to play some rookies - as the elderly failed badly and that included Matfield.

As a last measure Meyer adopted a game plan used by the Bulls in 2004 and eliminated the backline from attacking play and they were there only there as defending dummies.

To summarize - the fiasco showed up that the squad selection was seriously flawed and the elderly like Matfield were handicaps being detrimental to the campaign and it let to a disaster insofar as the game plan used is concerned.

1 It was a shock to lose....which was good, it made us less complacent for the likes of Scotland. 2 The only significant form changes were Pollard for the floundering Lambie, Vermeulen for the nothing burger Stephanie and JP for the hyped Mvovo. The rest were injury related changes with Allende for the injured Jean and Lomp for the injured Matfield, and Willie coming back after injury. 3 We tightened the game plan to something resembling Erasmus rugby....as we always do when things really matter. ... All of which got us further than we had any right to expect , within 3 points of a victory over NZ and another WC chance against Oz.

You missed the point completely.   The point is that the squad was all wrong - totally wrong,   It started off with inclusion of duds in the squad and so many players virtually with zero reference to performance.

To say that Matfield made the grade in the WC insofar as performance is concerned is utter crap.    De Villiers should never have been there - he was poor in games after his injury.   How many players where there on holiday?  Start off with Alberts, Morne, Payne, Kirshner, Pienaar, etc.

Then to claim that Matfield was better than De Jager was top class BS.   He was not.   The passengers resulted in young players having to be overplayed because the old guard was nowhere near capable of performing.   It caused Du Toit to be played at 7 - where he has not played for three years before that because Alberts had a fat strain.

To end up relying largely on players with less than 10 starting tests is to go in totally unprepared and looking for disaster.

To claim that Meyer clamped up and introduced a total BS game plan and say it was in line with what Erasmus is doing at present is not even remotely true.   Erasmus would never play the  totally predictable game that was played by Meyer's goats.

There are some things to be recognized  and given due consideration in future, namely -

*    selection should be based on performance and not only reputation;

*    Meyer had 3 years to develop a suitable squad to go into the WC - which he did not do so as to prevent ending up with totally out-of-form players and newbies with extremely limited experience;

*     the WC is a tough competition where players must be rotated to allow them a rest during games - Meyer ended up with a squad where rotation was impossible because there were too many passengers in the squad,

Erasmus do not have the same length of time to develop a proper squad and he is in 5 months doing a better job than Meyer did in three years.

This thread was started a s a discussion topic not to refer to it as an attack on anybody - rather to discuss what is to be done to prevent another selection scandal iro o f the 2019 WC squad.

Mozart

Meyer left huge gaps as a result of his selections and he was succeeded by a fool with no idea about coaching.  It took Erasmus only four months to get SA on a higher grading than Meyer had the Springboks in September 2015.

No use hiding behind fiction to get away from facts.

So how many years did Erasmus have to try and correct the shambles he inherited from Meyer and worse still Coetzee?   On average Meyer's teams were rated as no 3 in the world - Ireland was not bad either - but being no 2 now was only achieved over the last 2 years.

It was not the rating that was the problem in the Meyer era - it was the shambles he left as a result of his selections ending up with totally inexperienced players in the WC and subsequently,

It is also the dishonesty to claim that in the WC selections Meyer looked at performance as the norm for selection - when Meyer himself said he selected players he knew "what they were capable of in the past".   It is further dishonest to claim that some players like Matfield did better in performance than they actually did.

No Mozart - the reason why Meyer wanted his contract renewed and found out that it would not - he suddenly declared he is withdrawing his candidacy and then claimed that being the reason for his contract not being renewed.

Too many defensive fables are being used to cover up the mess Springbok rugby became since 2012.   At last there are now signs of recovery and those are discarded claiming dishonestly that the game plan of Erasmus is employing is the same as the game plan Meyer used.

Sure - Coenie was one of the players who with his injury history should not have been selected for the WC squad - that was clear before the start of the WC.   But he was not he only one - there were far too many others as well.

It was in fact stated at the time that Meyer was emptying the hospital wards in his selections and that was a fact as well.
